Pope Benedict accepts Maronite Patriarch Sfeir’s resignation

Pope Benedict XVI accepted Maronite Patriarch Nasrallah Sfeir’s resignation, according to the Secretariat of the Maronite Patriarchate in a statement issued Saturday. Benedict sent a letter to Sfeir accepting the latter’s resignation of the spiritual head of Lebanon’s Maronites, the largest Catholic church in the Middle East.

“I accept your free resignation, [and] I am sure that you will remain with the Maronite Church with your prayers,” the Pope told Sfeir in the letter.

The letter—which was sent to Sfeir’s residence at the Maronite School in Rome—thanked the Patriarch for his work, LBC television reported, adding that the Pope noted in the missive that Saturday is the 60th anniversary of Sfeir’s induction as a priest.

The Pope said in a letter to Sfeir: “I accept your free decision that reflects your humility.”

“I trust that you will always stand by the Maronite church in prayer, wisdom, and sacrifices,” it concluded.

In an interview with OTV in the Vatican on the sidelines of a ceremony to unveil the statue of Saint Maroun, Sfeir said: “They’re free to say what they want, but the real reason is that I have reached the age of 90.”

The patriarch noted that “the biggest threat facing the Lebanese is their split.” He added, however, that the Lebanese situation “is still better than the situation in neighboring countries.”

Sfeir submitted his resignation to the Vatican late last year, but it remains unknown whether the election of a new patriarch, if Sfeir’s resignation is accepted, will take place before or after the election of a number of Maronite bishops to replace those who have reached the retirement age of 75.

You are an idiot. These are the best words to describe you. The families of the brave soldiers left behind to die by the General send you their regards.

      1. The soldiers you helped kill by aligning with the occupier you mean? Oh yeah, they sure send their regards to you.

Or you mean the soldiers that you never cared about when you had the executive power?

Or you mean the soldiers you never cared about when Geagea went to Syria in 1994? Or when Hariri Snr went many times during the occupation? Or you mean when the “reborn” Christians from your side were in cahoots with Syria?

        Tell me, which period?

Aoun kept their flame alive, and their mission was complete in 2005 – when the country wasd liberated. He started and ended their cause.

After Syria left, their was no longer an aim to continue the fight. Syria in Syria; Lebanon in Lebanon. Syria is our gateway to the Arab world, and it is from their that we should from mutual relations.

But what would you know ay? You slept with Syria, then became Tarzan when Syria left. Shouldn’t you have worked the other way around? But of course not – that’s called being a hypocrit!

Anyway, Aoun many times called for a DNA bank. Not only that, did you forget the shameful LF flies around the excavating in Halat? Do you remember the ameturish excavation methods that were being used? It is proves that no-one was taking the issue seriously!

Aoun said first apologise to your lebanese brothers, before we can ask a former occupier to apologise! But what do you care ay? You calim patriotism, after you cause all the damage and then ride the wave for political purposes? Mabrouk alaykoun!

Mate, President Slieman and any Prime Minister has the national responsibility and the executive power to solve the file.

But Geagea can help by giving the names of those he massacred 🙂

Urgent: Sayed Hassan Nasrallah has nominated Sheikh Abbas Hussein Mokdad to replace departing Cardinal Sfeir.

    1. Isn’t it funny how a side with HA as an ally, has much more power and representation amongst the Christians, then a side playing with Hariri’s balls?

I am not maronite but I have a lot of respect and pride for Cardinal Sfeir for his National positions. He has been the rock that supported all Christians in Lebanon and all Lebanese in fact. Bkirki has always been in the fore front in defending the Lebanese identity, freedom, dignity and independence, and inchallah will remain so for ever.

    1. Do you hate Lebanon and Christians that much,Listen smart ASS as much as you love your Master Terrorist,we do love our Cardinal, don’t push your luck boy ,you are a Terrorist aren’t you. Since you hate Lebnon that much go to your beloved country Iran.

And all your posts are just the same thing over and over again. You have nothing constructive to add. I have tried to be patient and explained things, and yet you continue with your same repetitive crap.

This country will be rebuilt without you. You can either join in, or how about a deal? How about we do everything, then you can claim credit for it, like you did when the Syrians left?

Should I remind you what he said when the constitutionally legitimate government of General Aoun was toppled on the back of Syrian tanks and Lebanese traitors.

Actually it is quite ironic that 30 years later, we are repeating those words right now when Sfeir is gone.

I respect the man because is stood tall against the agression of is own community ( you and all the aounist sheep ) You hate others who see the M14 vsion as the truth path of freedom… Because you believe that their leaders are corrupt starting with Geagea. You can admit that a man can improve and reconcile with is past… You hatred toward Geagea and others without even consider for a minute their words, show how your mind think. I don’t subscribe with Christian that critize their fellow brother, that seek to build a one nation one army equation.

          marc,
With all due respect to the Patriarch and to the office He holds, all leaders of religious institutions claim to speak the truth. But the truth is, none of them should be involved in politics. They all should be doing what they are supposed to be good at; Pray, Guide, save souls, help the needy, and do charitable work for their own communities.
If, Lebanon ever going to get rid of sectarianism, religion and politics should be totally separated.
It’s Ironic that everyone calls for end of sectarianism, yet, everyone jumps to defend and support leaders of religious institutions.

Enjoy your hatred and empty brain.

A country will be rebuilt with or without you. It is moving forward, while you are stuck on the same broken record, repeating the same broken line. Guess what, the majority is not with you, and the Christians are certainly not listening to you.

They rejected you, by siding with Aoun in the 1989-90 period. They sided with Aoun during his exile. They sided with Aoun in 2005. And they sided with him in 2009. He reapid their trsut in his political and strategic direction, by giving them a voice in this country. A voice that is heard, and a voice that allows the Christians to play an active, not symbolic, role in the country.

You can continue to stand up for Hariri, who did nothing to advance the cause of Christians, but rather keep them in subservience. Aoun took the challenge up to him, and with him took the Christians on his back. Hariri wanted to silence Aoun, and in the end, Aoun silenced him.

  15. No Ifs, Ands, and Buts: Patriarch Sfeir Should Resign

    By Pierre Sarkis

I feel like we are living in the Dark Middle Ages when the Catholic Church was in total control of people’s lives.
The Pope was the Ruler of Europe, practicing politics, striking alliances with kings, princes and feudal lords, owning wealth, riches and real estatem involved in corruption and nepotism.
People were categorized as believers, worthy of grace and salvation, or non-believers, worthy of damnation, tried and sentenced to death in Roman Catholic Tribunals, better known as the Inquisition.
Isn’t this where Patriarch Sfeir and his clone, Bishop Bechara Al Rai’i seem to be living these days?
Bihsop Al Rai’i is judging who is a good Christian worthy of Church privileges and support, and who is not, and thus, should face the wrath of the church.
This religious arbitration is simply because people oppose church interference in the affairs of the state.

Sorry Father, i find myself asking you, for the sake of this country, the Christians and all people Living in this land, to simply resign.
Just quit Father! You have outlived your productive years and we are suffering because of your policies, decision-making and you opinions concerning some politicians. It is said that the Glory of Lebanon is given to you; I say the Destruction of Lebanon is given to you!

What do you exactly mean, Father, that if the opposition grabs power it would threaten Lebanon’s stability and security?
If the opposition takes over after June 2009, it would have done so through free and transparent parliamentary elections, and the people would have spoken.
So we, in the opposition, will be dangerous to Lebanon? You believe you are more Lebanese than we are ?
How dare you say that 50%, maybe more of the Lebanese people who support the opposition? Are around 60% of the Christians in this coutnry, who support the Madman of Rabieh working against the best interests of Lebanon?
Do you believe all what you read and all what the real traitors, the new independents, soverignists and liberalists who robbed this country clean and their Syrian allies, tell you today?
Were they expressing these feelings during the Syrian occupation of Lebanon, or were they cheering for Roustom Ghazali, and offering him the keys to the city of Beirut?
How could you sit and talk to the same people, who along with the Syrians, held you hostage in Bkerke for 15 years? What measures of resistance, other than your so-called famous September 2000 Council of Bishops monthly statement, did you and your Dark Middle Ages Bishops call for, other than demanding Syrian’s withdrawal from Lebanon?
As an objection to Syrian occupation of Lebanon, you should have conducted sit-ins at the Baabda Palace, or at Anjar, with your Bishops.
How about Civil disobedience? How soon you forget that your biggest supporter then, was the same Madman of Rabiyeh whom you consider today, to be a danger to Lebanon.
Had you had a sit-in at Anjar at the time, you would have seen all your newly-acquired allies of today, busy kissing not your hand, but the hands, feet and derrieres of their Syrian Masters. THey were never Lebanese first but catered to Arab interests.

Father, allow me to refresh your tired 80+ year memory. All the people you are embracing today are mostly responsible for the situation we are in.
Remember when the Palestinians ruled Lebanon from the late 1960s until the late 1980s?

Their LEbanese allies were the Mourabitoun, the SOcialist Progressive Party, all the SUnni Political Establishment, all the progressive parties as they were known then.
They chose to carry weapons against their Lebanese compatriots in the Phalange Party, the National Liberal PArty, the Maronite Tanzim and the Guardians of the Cedars.
They chose to fight against their Lebanese brothers.
As we were then members in political parties fighting against Palestinians, we were called isolationists, imperialists, fascist and more more Father, simply because we decided to defend our country against Palestinian hegemony.
Where were you then, on the moon?

How dare you brand us dangerous to Lebanon, when we have put our lives on the line, to defend our country?
Was your own life ever in danger in defense of this country, Sir?
If yes, tell us where and when!

Then Father, the Palestinians left, and those same people switched their loyalty to their new allies, or I should say, masters the Syrians.
Here, I should refresh your tired memory again. What was your position Father, regarding Syrian bombardment of Baabda Palace, the seat of the Maronite President, when the legitimately and constitutionally appointed Madman of RAbiyeh, occupied it?

You have forgotten, haven’t you? Had you supported the Madman of Rabiyeh at that time, we would not have had 15 years of Syrian occupation of out country.
When we called for the withdrawal of Syrians, way before you did in 2000, we were dragged then, by your visitors today, to jails and torture chambers.
You know who was the hero of that moment? You most beloved and cherished, self-proclaimed Christian Leader, Michel Al Murr who ruled this country for the Syrians, for at least 10 years, in his capacity as Minister of Interior.
Who can forget the sight on live television, during the special Matn elections, between Gabriel AL Murr, and Mirna Al Murr, for the parliamentary seat vacated by the death of a true hero, Dr. Albert Moukhaiber?
Do you remember the Gypsies, Barbarians, Tajikistanis or Turkmenistanis, heaven knows where they came from, who showed up in different areas of the MAtn, to vote for Michel Al Murr, even though he was not a candidate?

You know why Father? Because he awarded the Lebanese nationality to total strangers, while many Lebanese, mostly christians who deserve this honor, are still fighting to get it.
Those Matn were but a small number of the thousands of people that he bestowed the Lebanese nationality on.
There is no telling how much damage this man has done to Lebanese national interests!
No doubt, the likes of Michel Al Murr are your heroes especially nowadays, because he has found God and is keeping with him, as he told Marcel Ghanem on LBC, icons, crosses and religious symbols of Medigoriet to protect him and his son Elias.
Did he have these when he gave orders during the Syrian occupation of Lebanon, to throw opposition students in jails and dungeons ?
And then, who do your other daily visitors represent such as, Camille Ziyadeh, Fares Said, Michel Mouawad, Carlos Edde, or Mansour Ghanem Al Bon? In what language do you, Micho and Carlos communicate?
What they all have in common is that they are pure losers who sell you lies and deceit.

You have chosen to stray away from Christians public opinion.
The Christians have said their word in 2005 and gave their vote of confidence to the Madman of Rabiyeh, and until this situation changes, he shall remain the true and legitimate leader of the Christians, whether you, Father, Michel Al Murr, the old pro-Palestinian and pro-Syrian Lebanese heroes like it or not!
Were you no the one who declared, following the elections of 2005, that the Christians finally have a true, legitimate leader?
If i have a say in all of this, Michel Al Murr will be tried today on charges of high treason, for turning Lebanon into a Syrian protectorate, and for using his power and authority against his own people.
He boasted many times that he was Al Wazir Al Kabaday.
Without Syrian support, he would have been but a mouse, running from hole to hole trying to find his piece of cheese.

In the 2005 elections, he befriended the Madman of Rabiyeh like a puppy dog because he calculated he will be swamped by the Tsunami of the Madman, and will probably lose the elections.
Today, he seems to have found his piece of cheese in Bikfaya with the biggest loser of all, Amin Gemayel.
Poor Sheikh Amin! In his own lion’s den, he could not beat, Camille Khoury, a total unknown.
So, in order for him to feel like he is somebody, Sheikh Amin declared himself President of the Phalange Party, just to claim the presidency of something, anything.
He is now another one of these sorry, pitiful nobodies, who are trying to convince themselves, that they are somebodys and with your blessings, Father.

Now you know why you need to resign!
You have taken sides and have become a party to the conflict and not at the same distance from everybody, as you claim to your visitors.
In one of my previous articles, i had advised you to follow the footsteps of one Jerusalem Patriarch, who at 75 decided he was too old for the job, and resigned.
    Father, follow suit and resign!
You have done enough damage to the interests of this country as is, and much more than anyone in the opposition ranks can possibly do.
It is going to take many years to fix what you spoiled.
Therefore, i believe that remaining as the head of the Maronite Church is the biggest threat this country will ever face.
In my book, you are the worst Maronite Patriarch this country has known, and will probably ever know.
When you are at your summer retreat at Dimane, just trek down to the deepest part of the Valley of Qannoubine, where your predecessors prayed Father, not played politics and divided their community and their people.
Stay down there and pray for God to forgive you, and gradually slip into oblivion.
You will do us all a great favor! oh, and before i forget, make sure you take Bishop Al Rai’i with you to the covenant of Mar Antonios Qozhaya.
They will take very good care fo him!
Plus, life in the valley feels like the Dark Middle ages.
In your last sermon few days ago, and talking about the upcoming elections, you addressed the Lebanese by saying, and I quote “If they buy you, they sell you”.
Were you looking at your mirror when you said that?
Father, forgive my sincerity, honesty and bold straightforwardness!

Are you not aware that the person you idolise, Geagea, will go down in history as the worst murderer of Christians more then Bin Laden himself? He who bombs a church in my opinion should be sent straight to hell. Which is what is awaiting Geagea

Are you not aware how you gave the Christian representation to Hariri and Jumblatt in 2005 and 2009, while you took nothing?

        What more do you want??

Yalla continue with your useless words. You have no ability for a useful argument, which explains why you follow useless leaders who are good at talking and empty words, slogans and full of racism

        2. PROPHET.T Avatar

tayaar, when the revolution hits the gulf states, and overthrows their monarchies, They’ll move into their newly bought properties in Lebanon, and live ever happily.lol

      2. Who is messing with you? You can’t take criticism, that is your problem, not mine.

Secondly, the Patriach dragged his role, into the political game. So he can not escape criticism either. When he pits brother against brother, when he drags his community into a weakened position, when he wants to express a political opinion every time he wants to conduct a mass – then he should expect political replies.

He should not be devoid of criticism simply because he wants to hide behind a robe as a cover.

Lastly, you are such a racist person who should not be allowed to post such filth. I tried to explain with reason, facts, logic, examples with you – even if you did not want to agree, I at least made a concerted effort to make you see a different angle at least……. and you come back with is calling me a terrorist, syrian, iranian, shia etc in every single post. Not once did you answer me with an actual restrained, logical reply. I am a Lebanese, a Christian, and my heritage and culture is tied to the Lebanon whether you like it or not.

        1. your brain and your heritage nothing but a filth ,are you the queen of the Dahia, stop insulting me bitch.

        2. Exactly my point. You just continue with the same rant, repeating the same word, without ever replying with sanity. I am done with you. There is no hope to reform that sick mentality of yours.

I tried in vain to at least have discussion with you. I tried, but I am now complete with you. There is no need to reply to this post, because we both know what it will contain, so spare yourself some typing.

          Yalla, take care man/girl.

Actually I am done with this site. I came on here to provide a stimulating debate from the other side of the political spectrum, and all I have been met here is with vicious racists rants.

LOL at your posts. I don’t know if you seriously are stupid, or it is a practical joke. Either way it is funny.

And it is quite a shame that Ya Libnan has allowed such useless, hateful, racist posts such as yours to go unnoticed.

Oh by the way, mabrouk you at least repeated the words “Syria, Terrorist”. But you forgot HA and Iran. I am sure it will appear in your next post 🙂

        3. The Christians owe General Aoun a whole heap.

He fought against Taef that weakened the Christians, while Geagea, Sfeir and the other dhimmies accepted it.

He fought hard in exile for liberation, and succeeded in 2005

He fought against Hariri and Jumblatt who wanted to silence the Christian voice in 2005 elections, and triumphed.

He fought against an attempt to sideline the Christian majority from any significant governmental role in 2005, and triumphed in 2008.

He fought to have a fairer law that represented the Christians, and triumphed in 2008.

He fought for true partnership in governance, and succeeded in 2008.

He fought Hariri in 2009, who tried to veteo Aoun’s right to nominate his ministers and who tried to impose on us portfolios that were not worthy for our political bloc, and he triumphed in 2009.

He is again, in 2011, fighting for a fair and just rperesentation for the Christian majority who have again put their trust in him.

So please, either state where and when Hariri has advanced the christians, or just stop with your stupid repetitive, boring comments.

You want to read something interesting? Read an article called “Still standing: Aoun after elections” by Gary Gambill.

Aoun withstood the whole world, $750m, the expats brought in, relentless propaganda war – and he is now presiding over a bloc that is now the b iggest bloc of the new majority!!! So take that, ya youyes4u.

          Aoun triumphed, while you collapsed.

    1. I suggest you should have converted to shiitisim, were your veil, live on stolen government land, build another mosque on government land in the vicinity of Beirut Int.Airport that is hazardous to Landing Aviations, the almighty Hezbollah won’t bodge and they insisted on building it.hey at least the Cardinal didn’t build a Church on Stolen government property by the Airport.you waited 3 years to tell us how bad our Cardinal sfeir was.are you the one who is married to Gaddafi’s other son.

      1. Hey are you not paying attention to all the gulf states buying up in Lebanon?’

Are you not aware of the $60bn stolen from the Lebanese poeple?

Are you not aware of who Gemayel sold the Kataeb office to?

Are you not aware how the national airport has been renamed to Hariri?

Hey are you not paying attention to all the gulf states buying up in Lebanon?

Are you not aware that Gemayel sold the Kataeb office?

Are you not aware how the national airport has been renamed to Hariri?

Are you not aware of the St Balamand, Koura fiasco where Hariri named a hospital?

Are you not aware of how your terrorist buddies attacked a church in Ashrafieh in 2006?

Are you not aware that the person you idolise, Geagea, will go down in history as the worst murderer of Christians more then Bin Laden himself? He who bombs a church in my opinion should be sent straight to hell. Which is what is awaiting Geagea

Are you not aware how you gave the Christian representation to Hariri and Jumblatt in 2005 and 2009, while you took nothing?

        What more do you want??

Yalla continue with your useless words. You have no ability for a useful argument, which explains why you follow useless leaders who are good at talking and empty words, slogans and full of racism

Who said religious figures are above any judgment? Who said that religious figures do not make mistakes? Who said that religious figures are not human beings that get influenced, mislead, tempted and duped?

Few months ago, many people used to defend the Patriarch’s actions, refusing to judge a “holy” man, the figure that represents the Maronites in Antioch and the Whole East. Today, these same people, with all the despair and frustration of the world in their eyes, do nothing but bend their heads down, speechless, hopeless, broken.

So here I am, breaking all the rules, traditions, moralities, delicacies, fearless, desperate, angry, telling this Patriarch exactly what I think of him. I know this will shock so many people, they will be stunned, they will refuse to hear, but reality hurts. Lynch me for doing that, what do I have left to lose.

Patriarch, you killed the dreams of so many young men and women, of living in a country where their voice is heard, where their dignity is respected.

Patriarch, you raped the will of the people, you stepped on it, torn it into shreds, to satisfy your ego, just for that, and whoever dares cover you with excuses shall be considered, either traitor, or stupid.

17 years ago, when the Christians’ fate was on the line, you stood against the will of the majority of the Christians, you agreed on the one thing that denuded Christians of their share in the decision-making in this country. You defended the Taef agreement, and stood against the man who was telling you: “do not be fooled, this agreement is a trick to the Christians and to all Lebanese, you will be put under the mercy of the Syrians for years and years to come”. What was you answer one day after the massacres of that horrible October 13? You claimed that people should rejoice, that the nightmare was over. Has it been over, Patriarch? For 15 years we lived the unlivable, we lived crushed and humiliated, were you happy, were you satisfied?

17 years later, and you are doing the EXACT same mistake. You are standing against the majority of the Christians’ will once again. Haven’t you learned anything from the past? Ever since the 2005 elections, that, yourself admitted it, have granted the representation of the Christians to ONE man, you have been used as the weapon to shoot in the heart of the Christians and their representative, and obviously, the hands using you have succeeded in their plans.

How dare you step on the Christians’ will and present a list of names for the presidential elections, of men so insignificant in their popularity, representation and history that most of the people do not know how they look like, when the Christians have made their voice so loud in choosing who they want. If, like the loyalist clan that claims change in the popular direction, you doubt Michel Aoun’s representation, you should have acted fair and asked and pushed for new elections, and may the one the Christians vote for takes it all. Otherwise, you need to bend for the will of the community you are supposed to represent.

You ridiculed not only yourself, but rather all Christians by presenting a list that, later on, was thrown in the garbage bin. Maybe you should have suggested to be yourself nominated for the presidency, wouldn’t it have been more honorable for Christians? Maybe Michel Aoun and his whole bloc should present to you their resignation as MPs, and you could go down to the parliament and sit in their seats? Would you be satisfied then? Today we have no president, no Maronite to head the country, is the plan that you are working on for so long finally happening?
Just tell us, what will satisfy you, please, I beg you.
Anyways, we are leaving, the majority of the Christians are leaving Lebanon, we are leaving it for you to enjoy. At the end of the day, what’s more important than having your 5 minutes daily news coverage, receiving guests and inviting them for lunch, having your hand kissed by disillusioned few? I wonder though, if we all leave, would you still have your 5 minute news coverage, your guests, your lunch invitations, your hand kissed?
I blame you, Patriarch, for every single thing that happened and is happening to the Christians of Lebanon. I do not blame politicians, all of them, they are doing politics, politics involve lying, deceiving, back stabbing, working for one’s own interest, but what is your excuse?

” My house will be called a house of prayer, but you are making it a den of robbers.” Matthew 21.

Patriarch of Antioch and the Whole East, you have sinned!

    1. You are the Overflow of the ridiculous and the delirium.
Yo are Digressing from reality, You are not able to recognize when a noble intention is exploited by those who
      betrayed Our Patriarch.
And for those who said that We want to get rid of sectarianism but We jump to defend Our Leaders, I have an answer for You = Religion and Faith are between You and GOD, But when You drag and mix Religion with the dirty Game of Politics is when You people get confused and convinced, Disoriented and looking someone to blame, And those who You blame are Men who don look for revenge Like Our Patriarch, For This I accuse You of the sinn of Cowardly attacking a victim with a hate propaganda and Smear Campaign Like the one You are doing right NOW!.
You just remind Me the Crucifixion, When the Jews demanded to the Romans to free Barrabbas, And to Crucify Jesus.
We are looking in to getting read of Sectarianism Not for a Selfish and Stupid greed of Stability, Is Most Important To Protect Our Faith from The Dirt Of Politics. ¡Both Don’t Mix!
And You “tayyar” better go and get paid by You Dad Aoun. and You should Now be called JUDAS!

  21. I don’t think Sfeir resigned, he was forced out. I like him because what he represents, that’s it. When he visited Philly couple of years ago, the church was half full. Not many people cared for him. As he goes I hope Lebanon gets a Cardinal that will not take side and try to unite the Lebanese. After all the patriarch is instrumental in bringing the Christians and Muslims together for the sake of Lebanon.

For Youyes4, take it easy on yourself ….

  24. Prophet,

All religious leaders should not be involved in politic your right. When I speak about saying the truth. I meant the patriarch is a wise and smart man, he looks at politic from outside. He then take a position where he believe to be the best for all lebanese. An example of that was when the south was being bombarded by Isreal, he said to all christian lebanese open your doors to your brother from the south. I can go on and on with these kind of statement. But when some of is comment goes in a 360 degree of M8 position, the end of the world arrive and the agression of words flow from M8.

The truth in a democracy every one is in title of is opinion even the religious figure. The problem with that is some will be hurt and frustated because of the Patriarch comments.

The debate is only richer when someone who think differently articulate is opinion. Sectarism is not serving the higher interest of lebanon, but when lebanon will be truly free of sectarism is when a religious authority will say is opinion without being attack. In other words people should respect the words of these leaders without being oblige to follow them. This my friends is the essence of a true mature and civilize democracy.

But those who attack the patriarch see the patriarch as a strong figure who can influence their fellow christian against their polical view. They don’t see the wisdom of those who listen to a man who is not a politician.

      marc,
I’m not saying that the patriarch is not smart or wise, nor am I saying that He has any bad intentions. I Believe that He has good intentions for Lebanon, but This is not the point I was making. My point was that all religious leaders, the wise and the wise not should not be involved in politics at all, especially when the political leadership of Lebanon take advantage of anything Sfeir or any other religious leader says.
Good intentions, and wisdom don’t always justify or qualify religious leaders to get involved in politics, and take sides. After all they are humans, and sooner or later they might say something that may not be wise enough for everyone. This will put them in a tough position where they should not be.Plus, many people(including me ) simply oppose religion institutions all together.
Whether it s Bkirki or the Grand Mufti or Majelss Shiaa Aala, I treat them all the same. None should be involved in politics. There should be no exception. They can use their wisdom to unite people and encourage peace and coexistence through their sermon. For them to avoid being criticized for their political views, they should not talk politics. Whether you are a religious leader or a political leader, You can’t talk politics and expect everyone to agree with you, and not criticize your position.
It’s about time for all Lebanese to call for total separation of religion and politic.
Speaking out against an enemy bombarding your country is not politics, but rather a moral and ethical duty ,and well expected.
