Israel to get a record $38 billion in U.S. military aid over 10 years in addition to missile funding

Share:

us-military-aid-to-israelThe United States will provide Israel’s military with $38 billion during the next 10 years, officials said Tuesday, the largest batch of military assistance the U.S. has ever pledged to another country.

Following months of behind-the-scenes negotiations, the State Department said the two countries had reached a 10-year agreement, with a signing ceremony planned for Wednesday. The U.S. and Israel haven’t disclosed the exact sum, but officials familiar with the deal said it totals $3.8 billion a year — up from the $3.1 billion the U.S. gave Israel annually under the previous 10-year deal ( a 22.5 % annual increase)

Obama’s national security adviser, Susan Rice, planned to attend the ceremony at the State Department, a senior Obama administration official said. Israel’s acting national security adviser, Jacob Nagel, arrived in Washington ahead of the announcement and was also expected to attend.

Israel’s government had no immediate comment on the deal.

us-military-aid-to-israelUnder the agreement, Israel’s ability to spend part of the funds on Israeli military products will be gradually phased out, eventually requiring all of the funds to be spend on American military industries. Israel’s preference for spending some of the funds internally had been a major sticking point in the deal.

The new agreement also eliminates Israel’s ability to spend a fraction of the funds on fuel for its military. In another apparent concession, Israel has agreed not to ask Congress to approve more funds than are included in the deal, said the officials, who weren’t authorized to discuss the details publicly ahead of a formal announcement and requested anonymity.

The agreement concludes many months of negotiations that involved a delicate calculation by Jerusalem about whether to strike a deal with the outgoing U.S. president. In February, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu quietly floated the prospect of waiting for Obama’s successor in hopes of securing a better deal.

But the Obama administration has been eager to lock in the agreement before leaving office to help bolster Obama’s legacy and undercut the criticism that his administration was insufficiently supportive of Israel.

Obama’s relationship with Netanyahu has been famously fraught for years, and ties between the countries worsened significantly when the U.S. and world powers struck a deal with a nuclear deal with Iran. Israel considers a nuclear-armed Iran to be an existential threat and disagreed sharply with Obama’s contention that the deal actually made Israel safer by limiting Iran’s nuclear program.

Israeli officials have said predictability about U.S. aid is important to help its military plan ahead. Securing the deal ahead of the U.S. presidential election in November also ensures that Obama’s successor won’t have to delve into the issue during his or her first few months. Both Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton have vowed to protect Israel’s security if elected.

The new U.S.-Israel deal also includes, for the first time, funding for missile defense programs. Under the previous arrangement, Congress approved funds for missile defense separately and on an annual basis.

Congress must still formally approve the funding each year, but is expected to put up few roadblocks. Both parties in Congress have sought to outdo each in with displays of support for the Jewish state. The previous 10-year agreement is set to expire in 2018.

Netanyahu and Obama both plan to be in New York next week for U.N. General Assembly meetings, but officials have not announced any plans for formal meeting.

Hmmm … Didn’t Obama say ‘NO’?? Now they get even more?? Anyone having elections??

    1. You wonder to much without being able to proof that the military aid to Israel was really financed by pension plan money, or can you….

  2. Finely very good news, perhaps now everybody will wake up from delusions.

Finally how? IsraHell has been siphoning billion from the USA for decades.

Considering the fact that ISraHell is surpassing the GDP of many European countries, it’s particularly odd. But they, it’s wanted that way -> destroy the ME and Europe so that the UK, USA and IsraHell thrive.

      1. Would you like to inform everyone of the percentage of the USA budget goes to the Israeli aid package?

        1. The European Parliament voted (November 25, 2015) in Strasbourg, France, for an EU 2016 budget of 143.9 billion euros ($153.6 billion) compared with 141.3 billion euros this year.
The new spending plan more than doubles funding for migration-related measures within the EU to 1.53 billion euros from 658 million euros in 2015.

The fact is that the funding for refugee-related measures – mainly from war torn countries such as Iraq, syria contributing with the largest amount of war victims (refugees) as well as many of them are in fact just terrorists.

Your reply (Rudy1947- Omega), proves that this fanatic is not aware that the size of the military support for Israel $ 38 billion is peanuts compared to the funding for refugee-related measures of the amount of $153.6 billion.

If you criticize this fanatic he will gain the support of man-o-war, 5thDrawer and others in his ideological category – all of them are experts in this subjects….

          1. Even within the USA the amount of our foreign aid budget is either unknown or exaggerated beyond belief. When the question arises beyond the ponds, the exaggeration continues.

    1. 5thDrawer Avatar

Maybe that means ‘home charity’ should stay where collected? Seems it’s not part of the deal anywhere. Sad to note that Israel is such an impoverished state, after all.

The Syria crisis on Lebanon, that US SA Israel created (as in Iraq), alongside Palestinian refugee who’s lands were stolen by the Zionists.

Respect does not mean admiration. And certainly not friendship either.
It’s more wise to know the enemy and respect a present ability; but that’s a very long way from any friendship between antagonists, who always only want to test abilities, on occasion, when seeking to devour each other.

          24. Respect yes, but no admiration.

(I assume this was in reference to ‘education’ – which I have well-noted here before, although ‘some’ choose to ignore anything I say, continuously, perhaps because of it …)
My ‘category’ is a school of ‘life experiences’ … and relations with folks of most of the main religious backgrounds, and I dare say skin colours too. There are fond memories of good people known in my past, and relatives who share what’s important in life now, and the trick of that is, to not confuse ANY of a basic humanity with ‘religious pomposity’ or a belief in a ‘godly exclusivity’, which removes ‘humanity’ from any relationships, therefore ‘creating’ them to be null & void – sometimes instantly.
Actually found a few who think the same – and even male or female too.
I recognize when it’s not useful to espouse my personal beliefs, too. 😉

        1. Are you one of those Arab store owners who get really angry at the customers trying to get a better deal? 🙂

          1. man-o-war Avatar

No, its just really absurd that they were trying to make that an issue. Such a bad deal for the US. Majority of the military foreign aid the US doles out has the stipulation that you must buy from them. Taxpayers lose both ways with Israeli foreign aid.

Arabs love haggling , not sure what you’re talking about. Arab store owners or merchants don’t like haggling with Indians and Chinese because they’re really good at it too. They want to take you down next to nothing and they have a hard time taking no for an answer. They’ll wear you down and use up hours of your day and then leave without buying anything. Obviously I’m making a broad generalization, like you were doing.

          2. They were not “trying to make that an issue”. They were trying to negotiate a better deal, allowing them to spend more money on domestic military industries. The Americans wanted this provision phased out, and – rather unsurprisingly – they got the upper hand.

          3. man-o-war Avatar

“Israel’s preference for spending some of the funds internally had been a major sticking point in the deal.” Sounds like they were trying to make it an issue. It’s silly to ask for 38 billion dollar handout and then try to insist that you use to bolster your own military industrial complex. The whole point of us giving away free money is to 1. gain/keep an ally, 2. bolster our own military industrial complex.
