Al-Qaeda and Iran ‘agree on the doctrine of jihad’

Share:

iran, al Qaeda terror plot, canadaGiven the ideological differences between the Sunni militant group al-Qaeda and the theocratic Shia government in Iran, recent allegations that the two groups had conspired in a foiled attack in Canada struck many observers as odd.

But two years after the death of al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, experts in security and Islamist radicalism say Western intelligence agencies can’t afford to discount this possible connection.

Tarek Fatah, founder of the Muslim Canadian Congress and author of the book Chasing a Mirage: The Tragic Illusion of an Islamic State, says that by dwelling on the inherent differences between fundamentalist Sunnis and Shias, Western governments and media have overlooked an obvious similarity.

Radicals on both sides believe “that the world should be under a caliphate,” or Islamic state, he says.

“The difference is, will it be under the Islamic doctrines of the Shia or the Sunni? That’s a long-term division. But both agree on the doctrine of jihad.”

Last Monday, the RCMP arrested Chiheb Esseghaier of Montreal and Raed Jaser of Toronto, accusing them of planning an attack on a Via passenger train and alleging that the plotters had support from al-Qaeda in Iran.

Over the years, the Iranian government has been implicated in attacks carried out by Shia extremist groups, including Hezbollah in Lebanon, but many commentators expressed disbelief that Iran would ever collaborate with a Sunni group such as al-Qaeda.

“I think it would be extraordinarily foolish to ignore the obvious manifestations and likelihood of further co-operation between the Iranian regime and Sunni Islamic extremists, including al-Qaeda,” says David Harris, an Ottawa-based lawyer and director of Insignis Strategic Research.

The Sunni-Shia schism

The roots of the Sunni-Shia schism lie in the question of succession after the death of the Prophet Muhammad in the seventh century.

Shias maintain that by not choosing the Prophet’s son-in-law, Ali, as successor, Sunnis had defied the Prophet’s will, and thus do not represent true Islam.

Because Saudi Arabia houses the Islamic holy sites of Mecca and Medina, it is considered to be the spiritual home of Sunnis, while Iran serves the same function for the Shia. This also largely explains the historic enmity between the two countries.

Examples of Islamic sectarian violence can be seen in places such as Pakistan, Yemen, Bahrain and especially Iraq, where Saddam Hussein’s persecution of Shias during his 24-year reign led to reprisals against Sunnis under Nouri al-Maliki’s Shia government, and produces sectarian attacks on an almost weekly basis.

Noomane Raboudi, an Islamic expert who teaches in the School of Political Studies at the University of Ottawa, says he has trouble believing there is any collusion between Iran and al-Qaeda.

“For the jihadists, the Shia are not even Muslims — [al-Qaeda] almost have the same political view of the Shia as they do of Western people,” says Raboudi.

Fatah says that many people in Western institutions such as government, academia and the media have fallen for the “narrative” that because of a history of sectarian bloodshed, radical Sunnis and Shias couldn’t possibly collaborate.

He says it’s true, for example, that bin Laden viewed the Shias as non-Muslims, but bin Laden also considered the establishment of a global Islamic state more important than dwelling on sectarian differences, which is why he never fought the Iranians.

“Osama might never have collaborated with Iran, but the Iranians were co-operating with al-Qaeda,” Fatah says.

Al-Qaeda scattered after 9/11

In an effort to root out the planners of the Sept. 11 attacks, the U.S. declared war on Afghanistan in 2001. As a result, a number of senior al-Qaeda members who had been the guests of the Taliban in Afghanistan took refuge in neighbouring Iran, according to Seth Jones, author of the book Hunting in the Shadows: The Pursuit of al-Qaeda since 9/11.

As further proof of Iranian co-operation with al-Qaeda, Fatah cites an example involving Ahmed Said Khadr, the late father of Canadian-born extremist Omar Khadr and a known al-Qaeda operative. According to Michelle Shepherd’s 2008 book, Guantanamo’s Child: The Untold Story of Omar Khadr, Ahmed drove his daughter, Zaynab, to Tehran so she could marry another al-Qaeda member.

In an article for the U.S. news site PJ Media in 2011, former CIA operative Brian Fairchild wrote, “One of the key aspects of Iran’s foreign policy has been to undermine the U.S. and its allies in the Middle East by supporting Sunni terrorist organizations such as al-Qaeda, Hamas, and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad.”

Despite some philosophical ideological differences, Harris says that Iran and a group such as al-Qaeda have a common cause in their defiance of the West and opposition to the state of Israel.

The fact that Iran may be close to having developed a nuclear bomb would also be of great interest to al-Qaeda, says Harris.

He says if the Shia Islamists that head up the theocratic regime in Tehran “feel they’re in a cosmic battle” against the West, then “it’s not surprising that they might link up with the dreaded Sunni in order to fight the first round — and then maybe do in the Sunnis at an appropriate moment.”

Jihad … the Doctrine of ‘Kill Anyone who doesn’t do what we tell them to.’
As MANY have noted, doesn’t fit with ‘free thought’ or any democratic system.

    1. Jihad mainly is fighting oppression primarily and for defense ! E.g American invasion of iraq was considered jihad for muslims and now syria; so its against oppression. Its strictly.forbidden in Islam to violate or begin an attack

Baka. Explain that to all the people killed and maimed by various bombs planted just about anywhere they can get away with it … in just about every country you can think of.
And I’m not going to begin to mention things like acid thrown in the faces of girls who would like an education … blinded for having a ‘free thought’ … left with a dead life.

IN fact, at this point in time with ALL the examples, you could NEVER convince me there is anything ‘Humanely Holy’ about the concept.

        1. Ok fair enough but this article and the media are getting beyond ridiculous…after 911 and when the usa went into afghanistan the iranians were actually supplying the usa intel and information. It was in irans interests to get rid of the taliban just like everyone else….but this is getting beyond ridiculous…we are led to believe that iran (shiite) is harbouring salafi extremists in its country and at the same time fighting them in syria? Did you know salafi’s have a doctrine kill 10 shiites and you don’t have to pray anymore ? apparently you get an exemption…..What all this shows you re syria is that it was never about bringing democracy to syria it was about trying to break the hzb, syria, iran axis…..

Jihad-to strive for a good cause. Means anything you you do for a good caused 5th eg going to work to feed the family, overcoming traumatic issues, like the poor palestineans giving food to the poor syrians during ramadan and ofcourse defense agaonst the opressor. Your making a big generalisation 5th without understanding the full meaning and weighing out pros and cons.

There’s only ‘con’ when, what I see is, only death or destruction in the application of a ‘Doctrine’ … along with the debasement of the females who strive to learn, and yearn for respect, which is sickening. Find another word for ‘charity’ or ‘help’ if you wish .. (once a year??) … and a word for ‘defence’ if that’s really needed … but it’s not me who’s doing the generalizing by lumping ALL THAT interpretation into one word they scream while working up the crowd to kill those who don’t agree with them. AND it wasn’t me who called it a “doctrine of jihad.” Singular. One doctrine. But you have my opinion of it – which stands.

I was just showing you facts, and no not only one time it was just an example of what striving foor a good cause is. Poor kids feeding other poor kids what a beautiful cause. Death penalties exist all over the world even in demoncratic countries. If not that the enforcers of law (‘public’ slaves)or supplied with guns for’defence’. Respect my dear 5th is a two way street, you can strive and yearn but the truth is what you want inside is always projected in some way or form and like minded people may respect that and other may oppose. As for women wanting to study that is a jihad which is part of faith and is encouraged in the most reasonable way ofcourse. Where would we be without ladies there such delicate social creatures my wife knows nearly all the neighbours and i only know few lol. If your opinion is that you are not generalizing whatever makes you happy. The definition is clear as daylight. Just to clear it up it is (Noun)jihad-To struggle for a good cause.

Ok … I search for a ‘good cause’ that is actually happening in a failed state. Voila. There might be an example or two … this quote from a place of 20 years of death.
‘Women in Somalia are enjoying the independence of driving, after nearly two years of living under the strict rule of al-Shabaab.
Life for women in Mogadishu has changed beyond recognition, although full equality is still to be realised.’
(ie: still has a long way to go)
Meanwhile you can read the BBC reports on the increasing subjugation of women in Egypt – the ‘good cause’ going backward into a myth of ‘righteousness’.

In that lime light the way you put these little details may seem attractive. Are you telling me your so transparent that you could walk around in the streets with all your wealth gold bank statements for the world to see? Or moreso put it all out on the table when a friend comes over and leave the room? 100% of all the people i have asked tell me no they wouldnt do that. So why do it with women? The big picture is that a women should know how to drive in todays society but should go out for neccessaties. The women as i said before is an amazing creature and should have everything at her service delivered made or however you go about it.Unless your that transparent and would leave your whole life savings out on the street and turn your eye away then go for it. Dont take this as an attack its just an opinion. Its not about rights women have the choice to do what they want and should be spoilt should have an education to raise a new generation everything should come to her feet. This is a topic about ethics and morals and what the al shabab want to accomplish. They may deal with it differently than you and i but can you blame them for wanting to spoil there women?

Opinion:Natural insticts tell us in all shapes and forms women are more delicate then us men women have a soft heart compared to most men. They have adornments different to men so i dont care what anyone says we aint equel in physique and phsyc. LOL.

As you say, ‘2 individuals’ … equal in their agreements to live together for the benefit of ‘the whole’ and for the peace of mind it can give to each. And in THAT there is equality.
If there was also ‘love’ to begin it, call that a bonus – and, being free to do so, both could also give equally when ‘in the mood’. 😉
As for which came first, the chicken or the egg, see modern science.

As soon as you say ‘amazing creature’ I know I should ignore you. A lot of the women I know would whack you on the head for that. They are also HUMAN individuals – AND like to think you recognize them as such. They know, as do I, that they are CAPABLE of much more than grocery shopping.
As are the friends, who I know I can leave alone in a room with the ‘trinkets’ or the woman I know so well. She is not ‘mine’ any more than the gold is – as it is only stuff I have gathered when alive. If I can’t put trust in a ‘friendship’, then it is not.
For sure, there are places I wouldn’t walk around with it hanging on my neck – but that is because not all humans are my friends, and you ARE being silly there.
There is no logic in those kinds of morals, or in the ‘accomplishments’ of Al-Shikabobs either, who made women in Somalia do things they had NEVER done before, or suffer death rather sooner than expected. And the same is going on in Egypt now too – where women have now become objects any man feels he can lay his hands on if she’s out in public – and especially if he’s part of a gang of perverts who can surround her, molest her, beat her, or rape her. According to THE WOMEN there, it’s incredibly COMMON – especially since the moment they stood with the crowds asking for freedom in Tahrir Square.
I see your answer also to Hannibal.
Imagine if the woman has a weapon (say, her kitchen knife), and is attacked by only one of those chicken-shit ‘superior strength’ males of the species … and, not wanting his hands and eyes all over her person, decides to equalize the situation, and sinks the knife well and truly into his sweaty fat stomach. WHERE THEN would that ‘weird morality’ apply the ‘nurture’ you feel should be given?? She didn’t set out to do harm, whereas he did. Killing the bastard harms her as much mentally, as it does him while he rightly bleeds out.
Would that ‘moral society’ you love to flaunt now agree that she could be, at least, as SMART as the male, and, in finding the way to equalize the ‘physical’, has applied true justice in that situation? It has, after all, won her freedom, no?

I think the results would be rather ‘Talibanish’ instead.
The chicken-men would gather in a crowd for protection, and all be ‘guarding their private parts’ with one hand, in fear of her knife, while throwing stones with the other from a safe distance. ‘Protection’ is only for the male.
Those ‘men’ should indeed be ‘casting down their gaze’ – in shame. YOU should check the logic of your opinions.

5th stop being emotional im sure you understood by creature a creation. Whenever i make a statement you use tunnel vision, if i am saying women are more valuable than any wealth then it basically means she shouldnt even have to get the groceries if she didnt want. She can ask you to do it or somebody else. 5th something so simple uve complicates again but i dont blame you with all the propergander people are fed. The distinguisher of unequilaty is in the defenition itself ‘female’ ‘male’. If we were so equal in physiq and phsyc then we might aswell be called women(unfortunately this day is coming where men begin to act like women) so soon your gonna get a slap on the neck for even calling a women a ‘she'(as you have above) if your logic is true. I can agree we both have rights though our way of giving them may vary. Just because i said she should only go out when neccessary doesnt mean just for shopping. There are ladies gyms we can go to the beach together, have family bbqs, invite her girlfriends for a coffee, study (encouraged), and ontop of that everything good is brought to her feet. Its not so black and white as you may think. If you want to go there 5th im more than happy, have a look at amsterdam, kings cross, new york, africa, wherever you go there are women screaming for there rights against these dirty people and its got nothing to do with religion its all over the shop. Unfortunately in egypt it has become common but not only in muslim populated areas. Look the scene youve painted with the lady and the knife thays just sickening , everyone has there rights male or female dont be so pesimistic. If you can leave your wife comfortabally in the same room with your friend then you most be 1 in a million but i still think your lieing but maybe you are telling the truth. Thats up to you.

The chicken-men would gather in a crowd for protection, and all be ‘guarding their private parts’ in fear of her knife with one hand, while throwing stones with the other from a safe distance. ‘Protection’ is only for the male.
Those ‘men’ should indeed be ‘casting down their gaze’ – in shame. YOU should check the logic of your opinions.

5th stop being emotional im sure you understood by creature a creation. Whenever i make a statement you use tunnel vision, if i am saying women are more valuable than any wealth then it basically means she shouldnt even have to do that if she didnt want. You should also check out divorce rates. 😉 have fun bud.

          13. Of evreything i stated above thats all you absorbed…ok forget i mentioned that…what about the rest?

You claimed something wich i have the knowledge to object to as what you said has no significance to any sect of sunnas it is an obligation to pray even if you are barrak obama or bashar al asshead or khomani. The rest is your opinion i can agree the main ideaolagy of the west though is to try and take over the world. Money talks bullshit walks.

Jihad – to strive for a good cause. You see what you want interprit how you want the things you see the way you wish. How about this one. DEMOCRACY- march uninvitedly into any cointry wich has oil and only help the west forget about poor countries like africa. Send drones to kill any human life in this part of the world it doesnt matter.

On the other hand, while our cultures differ, our politics are very much alike. That being said, it is not democracy the problem but IMPERIALISM is.
