Pope: Muslim Christian friendship in Lebanon a sign of hope

Share:

pope francis good fridayVATICAN CITY — Pope Francis praised the ‘‘friendship of so many Muslim brothers’’ during the Good Friday procession that re-enacts Jesus Christ’s crucifixion and this year was dedicated to the plight of Christians in the Middle East.

The nighttime Way of the Cross procession at Rome’s Colosseum is one of the most dramatic rituals of Holy Week, when Christians commemorate the death and resurrection of Christ. With torches lighting the way, the faithful carried the cross to different stations where meditations and prayers were read out recalling the final hours of Christ’s life.

This year, the meditations read out were composed by young Lebanese faithful. Many of the prayers referred to the plight of Mideast Christians and called for an end to ‘‘violent fundamentalism,’’ terrorism and the ‘‘wars and violence which in our days devastate various countries in the Middle East.’’

Francis, who became pope just weeks ago, chose, however, to stress Christians’ positive relations with Muslims in the region in his brief comments at the end of the ceremony.

He recalled Benedict XVI’s 2012 visit to Lebanon when ‘‘we saw the beauty and the strong bond of communion joining Christians together in that land and the friendship of our Muslim brothers and sisters and so many others,’’ he said. ‘‘That occasion was a sign to the Middle East and to the whole world: a sign of hope.’’

Before becoming pope, Francis was Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, and he long cultivated warm relations with Muslim leaders in his native Argentina.

  5. Does the Pope favour a secular or a religious government? That would be an interesting dialogue to have with him.

    1. Hannibal Avatar

The Christians resolved this following the words of Jesus: “Render unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s, and unto God the things that are God’s”
This is the adopted quoted understanding of the relationship between Christianity and secular authority. This is how we separate the church from the state. We pray to God for the unworldly and the salvation of our souls and get judged over our deeds. We deal with worldly matters separately specially those related to money and the Law and state and politics. This is how it should be done but unfortunately many of times they shove their noses into matters which are none of their concern specially in Lebanon and the Middle East.

The pope has no say in the matter… It is the will of God.
      Happy Easter…

Correct me if i am wrong,But I take it you would prefer a secular authority in government. Do you then reject religious authority in government. Do you accept gay marriage, porn, drunkenness and other new unholy laws that have been passed . Gods laws does restrict our freedom to do mischief, but we truly become free when obey gods laws. Then we can talk about who’s right is it to rule. At the the moment we can say that might considers itself to be right, although we know that it s not right. People have changed the word of god to suit their own worldly desires. Who ever changes the word of God have committed a great sin. And the blind sinners have accepted the changes without even an argument. God save us.

It is not up to me to decide. That is one. Second who said that secular government allow all that? It is like religious authorities are some God sent filter against it. Enough of this hypocrite talk. Laws forbid drunkenness and porn. As of gay marriage I personally oppose it because it belittles the marriage between a man and a woman but they do have a right to a civil union. Being Gay is not a choice they made. You are lucky you and I are not gay but I know people who struggled not to be gay and they knew they were different. There is nothing wrong with that. God will save ALL of us at the end. I have no doubt about it.

The interests of our children should outweigh homosexual desires. If God will save us all, then evil must be equal to good. People who do gods work are equal to people who are neglectfull of doing the right thing. Sorry but I believe we all have to work to earn Gods grace. And judgement day is the truth. We will all be judged.

About ‘unholy law’ … hmmm ….
There have been many of those laws in history, and made by both sectarian and secular people.
But ‘religious authority’ should be only in the house of a god, or the mind of the ‘self’. Not spread like a wet blanket over the individual minds of any human society.
Making a law that allows ‘freedom in expression and choice’ is NOT making a law that says you MUST be any of those little things you love to hate. YOU have the freedom to turn away from what you see as bad. If your religion says it’s not ‘right’, then don’t do it. Just don’t shoot the guys beside you because they live together. Don’t look into their bedrooms either … unless you’re a voyeur and do a peeping-tom thing which IS against A law … and in most people’s minds, against a respect of individual privacy.
            About the ‘gay’ topic….
One of the ‘sins’ of the ‘gay rights’ movement has been to cast all same-sex people who live together into an unfavourable light. Prior to the ‘coming out’ of shadows, many lived together for simple support. Being too ‘open’ with it, however, is an affront to ONLY those who see it as a great sin … although that was not specified in those 10 ‘rules’.
And Yet .. A ‘Ruler’ or a ‘Religious Authority’ has no rights in someone else’s bedroom either.
Imagining what others do in their bedrooms, and faulting them for YOUR imagination, makes you the blind sinner.
About the ‘interpreters’ of a god ….
If YOU are the one who feels a secular approach to good government is impossible, and yet have never tried it, then you experience a form of selective blindness. That you would impose that on others, with a mind closed to anything of ‘free-choice’ which harms no-one else, IS a sin.
Society chooses what happens to it – and what it will believe.
Open the books, and let people decide. Education made open and informative advances human experience – and democratic thought allows for the ‘right’ choices to be made – for society and for individuals. Restricted éducation – by the interpreters of ‘the words’ (of basically other humans) – is sinful.
            About Acceptance …
You cannot say ALL accept that ‘the laws’ are best or agree with them. But to change some laws or allow others in societies NEEDS the secular government … religious ideologies don’t allow change very well – at least not without the ‘Godly-Wars’ of ‘believers’, who, upon seeing the ‘no-kill’ rule was #6 tend to ignore it.
So in a society which accepts the secularity needed for good government and advancement of the society, the people must also accept that some laws may be a pain in their individual ass, but generally agree to ‘let it go’ .. since it really doesn’t hurt them to do that.
It’s a sin to paint them all with the same brush.
As you say, God will decide. To ‘play god’ is against the FIRST commandment – #1 sin.

I have to reply to this. I agree with you Btru2u on all what you said, especially when you say “that we all have to work to earn Gods grace”, BUT if we both agree on these principles we cannot force them on others. You cannot force your ideas, thoughts, religious believes, values on me neither can I force mine on to you. Why millions in the world want to go and live in the western world and in America, Canada and Australia ? Exactly because of the freedom to choose your life the way you want it to be whether it pleases God or it does not, you have the choice, it is YOUR LIFE. Do you see millions in the world wanting to live in Saudi Arabia (where there is wealth and abundance), I mean really live and not go for a certain time or years just to make money and get out of there. The freedom of choice, of thought, of decision is the most valuable quality a free man has, and only in countries where this freedom is respected you see people prospering and advancing in life. In every society there are people who follow Gods wishes and commandments and others that don’t, but in free societies, this freedom is highlighted and we are informed about the good and the bad. In oppressive societies, like Saudi Arabia, we are not told about the bad, the bad is always camouflaged and hidden, they only highlight the good, or the perception of the good (people praying, people fasting, helping the poor, etc…)

Btru2u, What many people do not realize is that secularism is not necessary anti religion , nor is it atheism……It is a misconception that secularism is atheism, and many religious leaders play on people’s fears and scare them of secularism,by misleading them to believe that it is atheism, and it would take their rights to practice their religious beliefs.
Secularism is simply a separation of government institutions from religious institutions. In a secular society, you can be as religious as you wish, and you can pray anyway you choose, and you can choose not to pray at all. The fact that it gives you the right to be free from religious rules, it does not ask you , neither does it force you to abandon or adopt religious rules, but rather makes it a personal matter, instead of a public matter.

          1. Btru2u Avatar

Your argument seems to have merit , but as we see in today societies, secularism does erode away the true values that our the major religions install in us. Secularist society pretends to promote freedom of religion on one hand and hatred of religion on the other hand if it does not conform to the values of the secular system. Secularism is a deceptive ideology.

          2. 5thDrawer Avatar
            5thDrawer

‘Secular’ is simply an adjective – not an ‘ist’ or ‘ism’. It’s not an ideology. The word means ‘not religious or spiritual’. The derivatives make no real sense, except as nouns created to make it seem a philosophy – which it is not.

          3. Prophettttt Avatar
            Prophettttt

Btru2u,No one said that secular societies are perfect, but I think a secular society is better equipped to protect the freedom of all religions, because,in theory, no single faith is given a primacy of influence in the structure of the society. I would even go further to say that; A secular society prevents a majority religion/set of beliefs from persecuting another and therefore in theory keeps any religion from gaining power and backing -or taking over- of the government, and it prevents sectarian and religion conflicts with in same society
As for eroding values; It’s a matter of freedom which allows people to defy religious values in a secular society, opposed to a religious society where people think more than twice before defying religious values openly.
In other word, hypocrisy is more common in religious society than it is in a secular one.

          4. Btru2u Avatar

i do admit that current secular societies appear to be more tolerant of peoples freedoms than the religious ones. But we must remember that our laws were given to us by God for us to implement. if we leave temptation to chance , temptation will win , the majority of the time. I am embarrassed that there is no true example of a proper muslim state. At least in secular socioties where is sin open and accepted , it is just that, openly known . But where you have leaders pretending to have a pure religious state , mixed with corruption and compromise. That is a more dangerous situation for the individual souls living in that state.

I believe if Jesus or Mohammed (peace be upon them) were here, they would work to implement God’s decree down to the letter. We have the knowledge , but we do not currently have the will, because we are easily seduced by the devil to believe anything he wants us to. As we have seen in recent history, The Devil can Justify ANYTHING. So by disobeying Gods laws we leave ourselves vulnerable. At the end of the day, where ever you are , the choice is yours. We will be the masters of our eternal destiny…. GOOD WILL FOLLOW GOD into eternal BLISS, and evil will perish. May the Fear and Love of God keep us on the right path. AMEEN…

The fact that it gives you the right to be free from religious rules, it does not ask you , neither does it force you to abandon or adopt religious rules, but rather makes it a personal matter, instead of a public matter.

‘Secular’ is simply an adjective – not an ‘ist’ or ‘ism’. It’s not an ideology. The word means ‘not religious or spiritual’. The derivatives make no real sense, except as nouns created to make it seem a philosophy – which it is not.

Btru2u,No one said that secular societies are perfect, but I think a secular society is better equipped to protect the freedom of all religions, because,in theory, no single faith is given a primacy of influence in the structure of the society. I would even go further to say that; A secular society prevents a majority religion/set of beliefs from persecuting another and therefore in theory keeps any religion from gaining the power and backing -or taking over- of the government, and it prevents sectarian and religion conflicts with in same society
As for eroding values; It’s a matter of freedom which allows people to defy religious values in a secular society, opposed to a religious society where people think more than twice before defying religious values openly.
In other word, hypocrisy is more common in religious society than it is in a secular one.

i do admit that current secular societies appear to be more tolerant of peoples freedoms than the religious ones.

AMEEN…

I’m afraid that a discussion of God’s laws, temptation,Good, evil, devil, truth, and eternity…….. might be too dangerous to get into, lol. I will stick with a secular state where people will interpret all of these terms in a way that gives them peace and happiness.
