“The Suez Canal authorities does not usually deny passage to any commercial ships when they pass through the canal as long as Egypt is not at a state of war with the owners of the ship according to Ahmed El Manakhly, a member of Egypt’s Suez Canal board.

But in the case of warships they need approval to pass from Egypt’s defense and foreign ministries and this applies to all warships from any country . In the case of the Iranian warships neither ministry has received any requests for passage from the Iranians according to AP.

Two Iranian warships planned to sail through the Suez canal en route to Syria on Wednesday, Israel said, calling it a “provocation” by the Islamic Republic.

“Tonight, two Iranian warships are meant to pass through the Suez Canal to the Mediterranean Sea and reach Syria, something that has not happened in many years,” Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman said in a closed-door speech to Jewish leaders, a transcript of which was issued by his office.
