Russia to sell Syria anti-ship cruise missiles

Russia’s has confirmed it will supply Syria with anti-ship cruise missiles, Russian media report.

Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov was quoted as saying Russia would fulfill a contract signed in 2007 for the P-800 Yakhont missiles.

Both the US and Israel had requested that Syria should not be supplied with the missiles.

But Russian officials did not agree that they would “fall into the hands of terrorists”, Mr Serdyukov said.

Israel said they would pose a threat to its navy vessels in the Mediterranean.

Last month, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly told his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, that the missiles might be handed over to the Iranian backed Lebanese Shiite Islamist group, Hezbollah.

Chinese-made anti-ship missiles sold to Syria were used to target an Israeli destroyer during the 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah.

Speaking to reporters in Washington on Friday, Mr Serdyukov said the issue was raised during talks with US Defense Secretary Robert Gates.

“We will supply Yakhont to Syria. We will fulfill the contract,” he said, according to the Russian news agency, RIA-Novosti.

“The US and Israel asked us not to supply Syria with Yakhont. But we do not see the concerns expressed by them that these arms will fall into the hands of terrorists,” he added.

The supersonic P-800 Yakhont missiles have a range of 300km (186 miles), carry a 200kg (440lb) warhead, and are able to fly at an altitude of only 5-15m (16-50ft), making it difficult to detect and intercept them. BBC

    why they need a missile, the Assad are in accord with the Israelis since 1973, missiles for what, the last war Syria fought was the 100 day war against the civilian christians in Lebanon ,burning bulidings and gas tank in Dora ,1981 in Zahle against the LF, 1982 runaway war from the Israelis in trucks taking cars and goods from lebanon, 1988-1989 war against Aoun, buening the Christian area, shelling civilians leaving in boat to Cyprus from Jounieh, and using Sokhoi planes to attack the presidential palace in 1990 ,and after the intelligence war against the lebanese civilians since 1990-to 2005 , assassinations ,torture of leaders , also I forgot the extermination of Sunnis rebellion in Hama in 1980 killing 10,000 civilians, and killing ,of the Sunni pilots in Syria . Amazing the soviet or the new Russia have sentiment for corrupted ,killing regimes, well the Syrian should really question their president , maybe they need arm to oust him out more than waste money on Missiles, it is waste, most of the Syian airf orce is outdated and rusted and can be shut down by Israel air force 100 km before they can see them visually, their tanks all of them are rusted and the soviet provide them with tanks missing many of th features as they don’t trust them to keep the technologies back in the 10’s and 80’s , not much left Klashinkov, mm, and the missiles are buying who know they could end up used on civilian Lebanese ships , plus Syria will never fight Israel on their soil, thya have the Iranian bandits in Lebanon to do that for them , maybe Assad should buy himself few sport cars instaed and stop stealing from Lebanon !!!!!!

      guss this is the arab way, they kill their own people to stay in power, they have their moukhabarat on their own people because they are in fear of being overthrown. You think syria would dare fight isreal? they could have nuclear missiles and would still crap in their pants if isreal threatens them. syria only needs weapons to keep its grip on its own country and libon.

        Yes Maria , it is hopeless case , as people say in Syria, the person who enter the intelligence office , “al dakhel mafkoud wil kharej maaloud ” it simplify it all about this regime. As for Lebanon , we loosen the grip of Syrian terror on our neck in 2005 but it is coming back with their agents and the Iranian party in Lebanon , they are trying to put the collars on the free people again , hopefully we will manage to pull through and win as no matter what Bashar is a criminal but not smarter than his dad and the way it is going he will fall very soon ,we hope, but the problem is the dogs of Syria inside other than the Iranian party that have their own Mullah agenda , I mean people like Aoun who came back on the blood of Hariri in 2005 and who have declared in France ( check the interview on U Tube with Aoun ) when asked by the French TV anchorman who he think killed Hariri , he said Syria and Hezbollah before he caome back , but somehow the Syrian managed to promise him power and maybe presidency if he help them kill the international court , and he accepted and they put a collar and leech on his neck, people like Aoun are the problem and people who are cowards and people who change and bow down in the name of saving the peace ( what peace ,when Iranian party crippled downtown and terrorized people and still until now), even some are goignas far to call to cancel the international court , for us and you the international court must continue and if the verdict accuse Syria and the Iranian party, it is enough to start the process of toppling the Syrian regime and the Iranian /Rafsanjani party .As for Syria the problem there that the regime managed to get the fear to their heart after the Hama massacres and you need a very courageous men there to topple this criminal regime , on top of it the Israelis like much the Assad and like the fact that Syria control Lebanon , as the Syrian the Israeli don’t want to see Lebanon in peace too , they want us to keep killing each other and have the Palestinian on our land forever so they can themselves live in peace
