The U.S. homeland security chief said on Sunday he takes seriously a threat made by Somali-based Islamist militants against shopping malls, including the Mall of America in Minnesota, and urged people going there to be careful.

Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson was reacting to a video released by al Shabaab appearing to call for attacks on Western shopping areas, specifically mentioning Mall of America, the West Edmonton Mall in Canada and London’s Oxford Street.

“This latest statement from al Shabaab reflects the new phase we’ve evolved to in the global terrorist threat, in that you have groups such as al Shabaab and ISIL publicly calling for independent actors in their homelands to carry out attacks,” Johnson told the CNN program “State of the Union,” using an acronym for the militant group Islamic State.

“We’re beyond the phase now where these groups would send foreign operatives into countries after being trained some place,” Johnson said.

Asked specifically about the threat to Mall of America, one of the world’s largest shopping complexes, he said: “Anytime a terrorist organization calls for an attack on a specific place, we’ve got to take that seriously.”

“I would say that if anyone is planning to go to the Mall of America today, they’ve got to be particularly careful.”

Minnesota is home to a sizeable Somali population.

U.S. law enforcement officials have been concerned about the potential for radicalization among some of the community.

A Minnesota man was indicted last week on charges of conspiring to support Islamic State and lying to federal agents investigating recruitment by militant groups.

Prosecutors said dozens of people from the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, many of them Somali-Americans, have traveled or attempted to travel overseas to support groups such as Islamic State or al Shabaab since 2007.

Mall of America is a large private mall in Bloomington, Minnesota, that has about 40 million visitors a year, and contributes nearly $2 billion in annual economic activity to the state of Minnesota, according to its website.

Mall officials issued a statement about the threat made by the group, saying they are monitoring events with the help of federal, state and local law enforcement agencies.

“Mall of America has implemented extra security precautions, some may be noticeable to guests, and others won’t be,” the officials said.

The West Edmonton Mall in Alberta, Canada, gets about 30.8 million visitors a year and has the world’s largest parking lot, according to its website. Oxford Street is one of London’s busiest shopping areas, home to several large department stores.

  1. Here is an effectiv le yet simple solution: put security in every mall’s entry. Mandatory bag check as well, you’d be surprised how effectiveit is.

    1. This Al-Qaeda/Daesh has some kind of connection with the American intelligence. I dont blame all the people in the intelligence but a faction of it. This threat came immediately when the American government declare about shutting down the Homeland security project. Those in the homeland security will be out of office. Creating the threat of terrorism is a business and those Al-Qaeda Dogs from the other side help these people stealing money in the name of security.

      1. Idk this piece or in what connection its said but i doubt if a plan to shut down HDS could ever work.its US ,the land of conspiracy theories and the average american feels more protected when the dark suites guarding the state.
I’m 100 % sure IS lines are ifested with spies from every inteligence agency and from other fractions in iraq/syria.
But a connection..idk..its a fanatic state, im not sure the term state is good here -it’s more of forging a jinges khan type empire…the thing that baffles me is how far can they go with machine guns and SUV..
These guys are not self sustainable.
No weapon factories, no support from local population, they literali have no power base, no country which they came from yet somehow they have secure supply line from outside to support an army.
I think that if we find the supplier ,we’ll find who has a connection there

“I think that if we find the supplier ,we’ll find who has a connection there”

Didn’t you know? hind and us/is already found the supplier. haha

on a more serious note, well said. They can’t just get weapons from nowhere and if anyone can go join then, yes, you are right, every spie agency must have spies within isis.
But the question is WHY are they being allowed to grow exponentially?
I have to say these are very scary days for all of us.

          1. when we find the who , we’ll find the why..

i think they maxed out the expantion that is allowed to them in shaam.
no regional power really cares about Iraq or Syria, tbh- both are failed states in anything but apearance, it’s benefitial for everybody to keep all the kuku heads contained in one central location (side note- Libya F’d up this theory but i bet my 2 cents that neither Europe nor the US saw that coming)

my guess (guess only atm) is that it’s good for every gov to have them there:
having ISIS around is a convinient explanation to why keep fighting
It’s not that Iran/HA/Assad are fighting sunnies, they are fighting “radical sunnies”
if you think about it- having ISIS as a scape goat helps postponing a bigger war of the world between sunnies and shiaa- which is best for everybody i guess.

personaly i think the fear of IS is over hipped.
true they are brutal but if we combine all the beheadings we get to less then 50 . when you think about it more then 500 die daily in shaam so why these killings should strike more fear then rest?after all, dead is dead
ISIS’s only advantage is the videos it’s releasing and the psichological efect it has on those who fight it.
it might work on civilians or semi-military militias yet I don’t believe it will have the same effect on Israeli/Irani/HA or US armies which are proffesional armies.

I agree with you totally except regarding Iraq. It has way too much oil for the big boys not care about it hence why the US keeps sending them arms.
But the question I wanna ask is who benefits the most from Isis?

          3. Imo, Assad & Iran yet it’s educated guess and educated guess is still a guess

        Spot on!
        It’s always about the money.
Australia is using the same tactics. You know its very easy to create a fear mongering campaign against a minority group.

Muslim job rates have increased in the west its a fact, whaat better way to choke the muslim world? Start a campaign against them.
Make them suspects, make people believe their mosques are radicalized and that there is a problem within.

Nobody wants to hire a “suspect” who wants one hour off every jumua anymore regardless of his skills and endless qualifications.

Keeps customers like me away too, doron.
      I can shop ‘on-line’ – did the Edmonton ‘mall-bit’ once .. sufficient.
Let the ‘rug-rats’ run around the malls. :-))

      1. it’s something you get used to faster then you think and IF malls ARE going to be targeted then you will not hear a single complain after the first attack.
i tend to stay away from malls as well..little brats groveling on the floor with only their mother’s shouts to compete with their crying is too much for me
I will go if i got a wedding that day but no clean shirt :))

wouldn’t it be cheaper to dry clean the dirty shirts?

i think i bout all my good shirts this way :))

          5. 5thDrawer Avatar

Eventually, you’ll find you have enough of those for a month of weddings.
            Or funerals.
The hardest thing – after cleaning them all – is keeping the dust off until you need them.
Darker collars and shoulders are a ‘give-away’. :-)))

          6. i’ll hang it upside down then lol
i think our group passed the wedding stage in life now that we’re in our fourties.
now we got the funerals to look for :))
