Syrian President Bashar al Assad recently told Sergei Stepashin, a senior Russian official, that the active phase of the war in Syria will end this year.
Sergei reported that Assad said once the war was over, the Syrian government would “shift to what [it has] been doing all the time – fighting terrorists.”
The two also reportedly discussed Syrian and Russian economic cooperation, according to Reuters.
Hassan Nasrallah, the head of Hezbollah, made similar statements about the Syrian army prevailing in an interview on Sunday.
Assad’s army has lost control of areas in the north and east but remain in control of Damascus and most of central Syria.
