Assad thanks Iran and North Korea for help in Syrian civil war

kim-jong-un , bashar-assad-syriaSyrian President Bashar al-Assad has expressed his gratitude to the supreme leaders of Iran and North Korea in two recent letters thanking them for standing behind his government, which has been accused by the West of perpetrating human rights abuses throughout a six-year war against jihadists and other insurgent groups.

In a letter sent Thursday to Iran’s Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Assad thanked the leading Shiite Muslim cleric for providing crucial support to the Syrian military as it advanced against the Islamic State militant group (ISIS) toward the eastern city of Deir Ezzor, where a three-year siege by the militants was broken earlier this month. Since a 2011 uprising threatened Assad’s control over the country, Iran has been a leading sponsor of the Syrian leader’s efforts to combat various forces opposed to his government.

“The Syrian Arab Republic and the Islamic Republic of Iran are continuing the fight against oppression and aggression and eliminating the threats of terrorism,” Assad wrote, according to Press TV, the English-language affiliate of the semi-official Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting.

The Syrian military’s comeback in recent years has deeply hampered the interests of the U.S., which previously supported rebels attempting to overthrow Assad. This support dwindled as the Syrian opposition grew increasingly fractured due to infighting with more extremist groups such as ISIS and Al-Qaeda, and as Russia stepped up military backing to Assad. The U.S. has since switched its focus to curbing ISIS influence via support for the mostly Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces.

While the U.S. still calls for Assad’s eventual removal from power, this shift in strategy has opened the door for closer cooperation with Russia. This detente has not, however, extended to Iran. Unlike in Iraq, where the U.S. reluctantly accepted Iran’s extensive role in fighting ISIS alongside the U.S.-backed Iraqi military, forces supported by the U.S. and Iran have clashed at times in Syria.

As President Donald Trump calls for greater action against Iran and a renegotiation of a historic 2015 nuclear treaty signed by his predecessor, Iran and other leading powers, Assad also thanked the source of another one of Trump’s biggest nuclear concerns: North Korea. Trump and North Korea’s Kim Jong Un are locked in a nuclear standoff over the latter’s right to possess nuclear weapons. Assad reportedly replied to birthday wishes sent to him Monday by North Korea and took the opportunity to voice his desire to forge stronger bonds between the two countries.

“The Syrian Arab Republic appreciates you for supporting our just cause and expressing belief that our army would win a final victory in the struggle for smashing the terrorist forces and defending the sovereignty and security of the country and territorial integrity in support of allies and friends,” Assad wrote Tuesday, according to the state-run Korean Central News Agency.

In a report last year by the Saudi Arabia-led, anti-Assad High Negotiations Committee, Syrian opposition groups claimed that North Korean forces had been spotted fighting on behalf of the Syrian government, according to the state-run Tass Russian news agency. The U.N. has also accused North Korea of helping Assad build chemical weapons, which the Syrian leader denies possessing.

Syria, Iran and North Korea are all leading critics of U.S. foreign policy and have been subject to widespread U.S. sanctions. Iran and North Korea, along with Iraq under President Saddam Hussein, were designated part of President George W. Bush’s “Axis of Evil” in 2002. This was later that year expanded by then-Undersecretary of State John R. Bolton to include Syria, along with Fidel Castro’s Cuba and Muammar el-Qaddafi’s Libya.

In response to Bush’s 2002 speech, Libyan official newspaper Al-Zahf Al-Akhdarbranded Iran, Iraq and North Korea as part of an “axis of resistance,” a term used commonly today by opponents of U.S. foreign policy to describe Syria, Iran and Iran-backed Lebanese Shiite Muslim movement Hezbollah, which is considered a terrorist organization by the U.S and provides a vital column of support for Assad in Syria.

Having a dictator of NK supporting another dictator in killing their own people speaks volume about Syria’s Assad’s Family been doing to their own country. Having the support of a lunatic of NK to Assad who shoots his own people with Cannons because he didn’t like certain things about them. I mean what more Assad supporters need in order to justify this man to be continuing as President of Syria.. I don’t need to say anymore and any idiot wants Assad that means no Democracy in Syria and only Terror will continue until he eliminates all his adversaries period. I know some might say about Daesh and Al Qaeda. I don’t care what Assad do with them but he and Iran uses them when he wants anyway.

Sadly, birds of the same feather flock together. The US needs to sanction ALL countries that support the NOKO-Iran-Syria weapons axis (including Cuba and Venezuela). The EU is busy doing trade with Iran, which indirectly helps NOKO and Syria. Assad should not get any reconstruction money from the West until he leaves office. Period.

‘The Israeli Plan To Capitalize On Syria’s Civil War’

Israel has revealed a new plan to help rebuild war-torn Syria – with the ultimate goal of securing massive stores of natural resources. The plan would rely on significant investment from the U.S., a financial burden that will likely fall hardest on the shoulders of the American public’.

    2. Remember Danny that the Phalangists never wanted a relation with Israel because it will shut down doors to the Arab work force. However, when all doors closed they said we will deal with the devil (Israel) to defend ourselves… Don’t you think this is the same scenario?

Sorry I don’t agree with you. Israel is not going around and shooting their own people with Missiles and Cannons and feeding them also to the dogs. Israel is not sending missiles across the the atlantics in order to do testing. But that doesn’t mean the Israeli regimes were kind to Lebanon and the palestinians populations and I would not make friends and open borders until they pay reparations to Lebanon and stop the spying. Until then we are at a state of wars. But Assad didn’t even befriend anyone in Lebanon and he backstabbed everyone. But when he saw he needed the Resistance he had no choice but to work with it. Now Iran is controlling him and every aspect of his government. If he didn’t send his shabihee gangs to shoot down people and was more opened to his people, most would not have joined extremists. remember for a year the Syrian revolutions started peaceful and many people refused to carry arms and fight the regime because they thought they would make him change his course. But when he decided to join the evil of axes and destroy everyone’s in his way then I have problems with that. I have problems with him dumping millions of syrians to Lebanon and Turkey and everywhere else. He laughs as if nothing is happening to his country. Yes I know Daesh and Al Qaeda are a threat and dangerous ones. But let’s not forget also he sent them to Lebanon to fight the LAF and he also let loose hundreds if not thousands of them with arms so they go around and join the revolutions so he can tell and show look it’s only extremists who are doing the fighting and the Syrians who joined them are terrorists too. I think you should know better than that. Al Quds brigade and Assad facilitated Al Qaeda roads to Iraq where they didn’t care about killing Shiites and Sunnis. so had him, Iran and not let them in and had he worked with his people then Syria and Lebanon and the world who is taking these refugees would not be in this mess.

Danny, when you are fortunate enough to have become a person with your own mind and no longer have obligations to defend unconditionally those who behave badly just because they are your neighbors, sect, nationality etc you become able to seek and read people for who they are or have become, some are progressive and are able to grow and some are hard core biased racists that only deem others wrongs admimssable.

You and Hannibal are among the most intelligent posters in the sense that you call everyone out courageously as you feel righteously indignant at liars on a mission to only find wrong in others and profess to be on a mission from either GOD or have superior rights that gives them immunity from any form of accusations. your views and passion to speak fearlessly in a place where most are only on a mission to wether defend Israel or demonize it when there are hundred of thousands dead, mammed , homeless and only head figures like assssad, kim jung very ill and extremism on all sides with no promise of anything but more divisions and justification of poor status quo. I wonder if anyone takes time to actually put value on results? the results in the whole region are a bucket of S#%T

Hannibal is tragically under appreciated and misunderstood by most newbies, his favorite sport is counter punching so people often miss out on a quality conversation of a very intelligent expat that although has been there and done that is able aspire to higher standards and acknowledges that in the rear view mirror is the past where innocence lacked on all sides but also knows the core of the problem is lack of solutions and continuing suffering due to supporters of trouble making leaders , if an alien came to the middle east he would not be a fan of what any of the leaders often defended on this forum, a killer is a killer, a dictator is a dictator, a guy dressed in black is just a guy selling Allah next to an Ak 47 and a an oppressing occupier is not a cuddly teddy bear.

lastly in the land where you can easily sell confusion, people forget that your enemy’s enemy is your friend…. until another cause arises and you can switch again to recruit more followers and cause more mayhem on humanity and civilians.

          1. Finally someone who can understand me… 😉

Well Thank you my friend.. that’s mighty nice compliment and I appreciate it. I only seek the truth and unity in Lebanon. I am tired of us pulling in different directions. I don’t support Israel or any arab nations. In this crazy world you can only pull for yourself and neighbors and your own fellow citizens. If you are then nobody can defeat you. The 300 mighty Spartans nearly defeated persian Empire because they were united and the persian empire had fighters who were bought and fighting on their behalf. It seems like history is repeating itself and they are doing it now. I love the all the muslims in my country as much as i am a Christian who loves all the Christians of course. But I am tired of seeing young Shiites going to fight and dying for a a cause that was not justified in the first place. fighting for Lebanon is different and honorable and whether you like Hezbollah or not you will respect them. But when they are dragging us in regional wars and destroying us in the process this will not be tolerated. Neither Israeli attacks all those years and neither we should have tolerated Assad ruling for decades in Lebanon. The only reason Nassrallah has not fully implement Wiliat Al Faqih cause many Lebanese are rejecting it and they will not tolerate it. I don’t want to venture here to many issues.. have a good night and thanks again for the compliment.

So you believe this since 2011 it tells a lot about indignation..absorbing one side of War propaganda, the american way or the highway.
The first casualty of war is the truth.

In April 2011, Syrian state television aired the testimonies of three men arrested on suspicion of being involved in attacks on civilians and Syrian security forces. Anas al-Kanj, who presented himself as the head of an “armed terrorist group” is heard saying in a taped broadcast that he received “arms and money” from Lebanese MP Jamal Jarrah through an intermediary, Ahmad al-Uda, who identified himself as a member of Syria’s banned Muslim Brotherhood.

Kanj said he was instructed “to incite people to protest, particularly outside the Ummayad Mosque in Damascus” and in the flashpoint protest towns of Daraa, Latakia and Banias, to “incite protests to topple the regime and to carry out acts of sabotage”. Agence France-Presse, citing Syria’s Ath-Thawra newspaper, said that Kanj was instructed “to open fire on protesters in order to sow disarray and lead people to believe that the security forces was shooting on the demonstrators.”

In a December 2011 post on her web site, Turkish-American former FBI translator and founder of the National Security Whistleblowers Coalition (NSWBC), Sibel Edmonds, stated that, according to her sources, “foreign military groups, estimated at hundreds of individuals, began to spread near the villages of the north-Jordan city of Al-Mafraq, which is adjacent to the Jordanian and Syrian border.”

You seem to have an opinion and knowledgable about every situation in the world. Yes there were no fighting back from Syrian protesters during the first year. It took a turn afterward when Shabihee thugs and Hezbollah were murdering innocent Syrians. You always want to protect Assad no matter how bad he is. You always want to be critical of Israel and rightfully so but you never equate the Syrian bloody thirty soldiers for what they did to Lebanon and even Palestinians. You always attacking Christians who fought to preserve Lebanon and their rights to existence. It’s always to you American propaganda but Assad and Nassrallah and the Ayotallas are angels descended from Heaven. you are full of it and you will never grow up and be mature and admit to their wrongs. it’s ok i don’t expect from you much after many years seeing your blogs that is the same load of crap as always.

I like the truth, not “exaggeration”. I do have opinions and knowledge about what’s important to me and the Middle East, without the past there’s no future the present is the point we can judge past actions, we learn lessons it’s called evolution, it takes me 2 seconds to see lies and fake news manipulations.
It’s you who’s immature wrong and very very badly informed, btw you know me for “many years”

“You always attacking Christians who fought to preserve Lebanon and their rights to existence. It’s always to you American propaganda but Assad and Nassrallah and the Ayotallas are angels descended from Heaven”..that’s naive.

  4. Russia is the only country that really made a difference in saving the bloody Assad dictatorship. Without Russian airforce none of the Shia militias and armies stood a chance and were near defeat when Russia got involved. The real tragedy is that the country has been destroyed mostly by indiscriminate bombing and gassing by Assad and all Russia achieved is maintaining the same ruthless man with the same ruthless problems. And to make matters worse Assad has empowered Iran to build bases for its own project war against Israel which will lead to yet more future wars and destruction.
The death and destruction are far from over……it sounds bleak because it is. Assad will continue murdering and jailing thousands in the coming purge of opposition.
