Car bomb attacks kill 57 people in Iraq: police

At least 57 people were killed on Monday in car bomb attacks in Baghdad and the north and south of Iraq, police and medical sources said.

One attack took place near a crowded market in the town of Khalis, about 80 km (50 miles) northeast of Baghdad, killing 35 people, police said.

“The driver begged police to be allowed to park his vehicle in order to buy medication from a nearby pharmacy and five minutes later it (the bomb) went off and caused huge destruction,” police captain Mohammed al-Tamimi said.

In the town of Al Zubair, about 15 km (9 miles) southwest of the oil town of Basra, a second attack took place also near a crowded market. Ten people died.

Another car bomb exploded in the Hussainiya district of the northern outskirts of Baghdad, killing 12 people, police and medical sources said.

Iraq, a major OPEC oil producer, is struggling to come up with a formula to contain Islamic State, the ultra-hardline Sunni group that controls a third of the country and wants to redraw the map of the Middle East.

Islamic State has previously claimed responsibility for car and suicide bombings.

Can’t trust Taxi drivers any more – and they don’t stick around to become part of the Gory Glory.
Now they will have to set up parking lots outside of towns, and transport things into town by Golf Carts or little ‘people-trains’ … like Disneyland does. Market goods can arrive at 4 to 5 AM by trucks sized for the task like in Luxembourg, and after that the streets are only for walking or slow 1-speed bicycles. Luxembourg also managed to keep skateboard maniacs out by sticking with the cobble-stone-brick and making everything a sidewalk.
(‘People-City’ folks who block streets to traffic for ‘special cultural events’ should move to Luxembourg.)
Of course, if you want buy anything ‘fresh’, you have to trust a grocer and fast runners of a delivery team. (but that also stops all the germ-laying bruising & squeezing of everything on a display-counter)
Not, of course, that a bag of hand-grenades couldn’t be carried in, but the odds on becoming a martur are much better than that for a taxi-driver who could speed-walk for 5 minutes first and then turn to cell-video the plume of smoke from a safe distance.

  2. Two suicide bombers blew themselves up in the morning on Wednesday, March 7, in the mosque of the administrative district of the city Damaturu in the province of Yobe.
The attack killed at least 13 people. Another 12 people received injuries of varying severity.
Also this morning, militants of the Islamist terrorist organization “Boko Haram” attacked a military camp in the north-eastern part of the province of Yobe. The attack was repulsed. Press service of the Nigerian army said that about 100 militants were eliminated
