Lebanon arrests hardline anti-Hezbollah Islamist cleric Ahmed al-Assir

assir with beard and clean shavedLebanese authorities detained a hardline Sunni Islamist cleric wanted for attacks on the Lebanese army as he tried to flee the country on Saturday, security officials said.

Sheikh Ahmed al-Assir, a Lebanese citizen, was arrested at Beirut airport as he tried to depart using a forged passport, the officials said. The National News Agency said he wanted to travel to Egypt.

Assir rose to prominence with the onset of the civil war in neighboring Syria that has triggered instability in Lebanon by exacerbating sectarian tensions between its Sunni and Shi’ite communities.

Charges against him include forming a terrorist organization and inciting violence against the army.

In 2013, 12 Lebanese soldiers were killed when they stormed a mosque complex belonging to Assir in the southern city of Sidon.

Assir’s supporters accused the army of siding with the Lebanese Shi’ite group Hezbollah, which is fighting in Syria alongside President Bashar al-Assad against predominantly Sunni Muslim insurgents.

As the war in Syria escalated, Assir won support among some Sunnis in Lebanon by speaking out against Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah and organizing protests against Assad.

Assir, who had been in hiding, was sentenced to death in absentia by Lebanon last year. The National News Agency published a photo showing a clean-shaven Assir apparently taken after his detention.

Last year, Assir posted a message on Youtube calling on Sunni Muslims to defect from the Lebanese army, which is carefully balanced to reflect the country’s sectarian make-up.

Attacks by Sunni militants have hit Lebanon repeatedly since the start of the war in Syria. The last major clash was in the northern city of Tripoli last October, when 11 soldiers were killed in fighting with militants.

A year ago, Islamist insurgents affiliated with the Nusra Front and Islamic State staged an incursion into the border town of Arsal, seizing 33 soldiers and policemen. Islamic State and Nusra Front are still holding 23 of them.

I congratulate the Lebanese authorities for catching him and thanks for the Tips hezbollah you are wonderful. i wish Hezbollah now can tell us where are the 4 or 5 wanted by STL for being accused behind Rafiq hariri and 18 other innocent people please.. I am so impressed with the authorities of catching whom they want and whenever they want which is great as long as these are bad guys. Maybe Assir meant well in the beginning but he was not smart enough knowing that hezbollah will trick him and use the army against him. but he fell for the trap and he should have given himself up instead of allowing to submerge into blood. the Army is a Red Line and after that i could careless if you burn in hell. but please find us those 5 stooges who are in dahia.. Oh wait there must be hiding in the pile of Garbage that’s why they have it there. the FPM don’t want to even have it removed and they accuse Al mustaqbal of it. who is bad here.. oh fuck all these assholes and anyone who follows them.

I think he wanted to get caught. otherwise he was insane to go thru the airport knowing that hezbollah more than the Army is looking for him. I think you are going to see Fadel Shaker doing the same.. giving himself up for sure. At least he didn’t blow himself up..

      1. Your kidding right? He wanted to get caught? He actually entered the airport in a burqa dressed as a woman. And why wouldn’t the army want him more than hzb after all he was responsible for killing 18 troops?? After all this time he finally wanted to get caught? You sound like a sympathiser? Yallah let Fadel shaqir out so he can sing again as well??? Don’t be surprised if they try and exchange him for the 25 troops in arsal???

well what it was didn’t he think that hezbollah and the army have spies inside the camp to tip them? second i am very happy that he is caught again the Army is a Red line but i doubt it very much ISIS or Al Nusra will exchange him for anything. he doesn’t mean shit to them. Mark my words these two terrorists group will not even bother discuss any hostages for them. if they do and get even few freed, then I will go along with all your posts. And they don’t then that tells me those groups never cared for him and he was going against hezbollah because of his own believes nothing else. time will tell i suppose soon. and lastly of course the Army wants him nobody said otherwise. i am just saying that hezbollah spying network is much more complicated and effective and i am sure they help the army in tracing him and knowing his moves.

          1. It does make you wonder how and when some get caught and how others don’t. Lebanon problem is its the playground for the region. As you said “Allah kabir”.

well it maybe rumors but someone told me that Assir passed the Army checkpoint at the airport and inside agency nabbed him. now i know from a relative in the army that Hezbollah has security offices inside the airport that pretty they answer to themselves.
figure it out.. but you are right and i was wrong when i said he wanted to get caught. but again he was stupid to go the camps to hide there. if he was al Amir created by Al Nusra or ISIS why would he hide in the camp and not with the terror group in Syria.

          3. Apparently they let him actually get on the plane and pulled him off the plane. I don’t think he was created by nusra or isis. He came before they grew into what they are now. II th think he was set up internally to create sedition. If he was that big he would have disappeared into syria. I think him and shaker have run out of funds and that’s what’s forced him out. Trust me if he was that big he would have disappeared. The Palestinians you pay you get if you know what I mean.

well in the beginning he was only anti-hezbollah and not other shiites or christians even sent his followers to harrass them. so i am not too sure about the sedition part. If he was to pull something like this then many would have rejected him then. but i know some christians were apprehensive of him and rightly so but at the same token i never heard or read that his followers went around and threatened people. but what do i know i am not there and all i can go by what i read from Lebanese newspapers and friends who have connections and relatives in the area. well obviously if he has gone surgeries to change his appearance was a lousy ones because anyone can put a computer picture of him and remove the beard and chop the hair and it will end up being him anyway.. lol
I am happy they got him and anyone harms the army or any innocent people will not get my sympathy no matter what religion he is from.

It will be a little beat complicated he was married to a Palestinian woman and said he would be proud to be a Palestinian, than he asked the Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas to give him Palestinian citizenship.

Mahmoud Abbas announced that he would give Shaker a Palestinian passport…..

I wouldn’t be surprised if are working for “Radio Islam” that once was a Swedish radio channel, now only available as a website.

The EU’s racism monitoring organization has called it “one of the most radical right-wing antisemitic homepages on the net”.
“A 2003 report commissioned by the European Monitoring Centre on Racism and Xenophobia described Radio Islam as “one of the most radical right wing anti-Semitic homepages on the net with close links to radical Islam groups” ”

Ahmed Rami of Radio Islam interviewed in the studios of Al Manar, Beirut.

          LOL ….

      3. Yeah that’s right always blame others. That’s why these so called muslims are killing other muslim (and none muslim) Arabs. Well, I’m not white, I am an Arab, and not a Muslim. Just because I don’t agree with their evil and criminal behavior doesn’t make me a slave to Zionest.

That’s the problem with radicals like you, you don’t accept others opinions, and use religion as a excuse to hide behind. Because you’re in denial about the real problem with Arabs (not Muslims), Arabs that existed long before this man made religion was invented – like the other 2.

Radicals like this idiot are worst than the Zionest. And my point is if you love defending these so called Muslims why don’t you also go an live in SA, and leave us all the fuck alone.

        1. you are no expertise on your nation history..read colonial history and read Jews watch. You have very limited knowledge.
