The government says 22-year-old Mohammad Hamdan wanted to join Hezbollah, a Shiite Muslim group in Lebanon that is classified by the U.S. as a terrorist organization. He is charged with violating a law that prohibits support for terrorist groups.

Magistrate Judge R. Steven Whalen said Monday that Hamdan won’t be released on bond. Whalen pored over transcripts of secretly recorded conversations and says Hamdan is a “confused young man.” He fears Hamdan may try to flee.

Whalen says there’s no evidence that Hamdan wants to harm America.

Defense attorney Art Weiss says he’ll fight the charge.

The FBI said an informant recorded conversations with Hamdan.
