‘Pro-Syrian’ Lebanese cleric shot dead in Tripoli

Islamic Action front flagA Lebanese Sunni Muslim cleric whose group is allied to Syria’s government has been killed in the northern city of Tripoli, security sources say.

Saad al-Din Ghiyyeh, an official in the Islamic Action Front ( Jabhat al-‘Amal al-Islami) , was shot in his car by masked gunmen on a motorcycle.

He was rushed to hospital but died shortly afterwards.

Soldiers were deployed to the area to prevent further violence in the city, which has seen deadly sectarian clashes aggravated by the conflict in Syria.

Since 2012, at least 50 people have been killed in fighting between residents of the predominantly Alawite district of Jabal Muhsin and the neighbouring Sunni areas of Bab al-Tabbana and Qobbeh.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is an Alawite and members of the heterodox Shia sect dominate the government and security forces.

Syria’s majority Sunni community bore the brunt of the crackdown on dissent and is at the forefront of the armed revolt against the state.

Ghiyyeh, who survived an attempt on his life several months ago, was reportedly close to the head of the IAF, which has good relations with the Syrian government and Lebanon’s Shia Islamist movement, Hezbollah.

Two IAF members are said to have been arrested on suspicion of involvement in the bombings of two Sunni mosques in Tripoli in August that killed at least 42 people and wounded hundreds more.

The controversy is in the title – Pro-Syrian Lebanese
Yet, everybody thinks it’s normal… what a joke of a country!

    1. The other day you made a comment re our army that you shouldnt give guns to kids which i found ridiculous to say the least…what do you make of this?..there is a power struggle in tripoli my friend..the politicians are arming their people yet the power is in the hands of those with the guns….how many zaems can 1 city handle?

      1. 5thDrawer Avatar

They are working on finding out … the hospitals are ‘maxing out’, especially where nursing staff get shot too.
I note the articles still mention only dead numbers – wounded are ‘hundreds’ … but never a real figure, although I’m sure one could fill a few pages of a news-paper with the ones who have had holes stitched up after getting the lead out.

        1. How much money has been pumped into these areas? 2nd largest city in lebanon yet kids still die because hospitals dont have respirators?

          1. 5thDrawer Avatar

Yup. Or food or protection from disease or …. OH, such a list.
Patients seem to need to be transported to Beirut, curiously, as ‘help’ can’t come to Tripoli from there … for instance, in the form of blood-bank supplies or test equipment … and that’s a pricy ride too. Good Doctors … yes … and they struggle constantly … at least, the overworked underpaid few who haven’t thrown in the sponge and gone elsewhere.

the LAF is not a national institution, it’s a puppet and big powers will never arm it properly until it shows differently.
As for the weapons spreading everywhere what do YOU make of this mr. let’s support part of the population being armed and not the other. The silliness is that things have been happening exactly like sane people predicted, 1000% just like the scenarios logical people put forth for the future and you refused to listen thinking that the “Resistance” will remain the only force on the ground forever and ever… After the Israeli withdrawal from the south, when people begged the resistance to disarm you replied there’s the Shebaa Farms. When the Shebaa farms became a very heavy price for peace and prosperity you replied until the liberation of Jerusalem… Do you think people who get shot at day after day after day are going to keep quiet? No they won’t they’re going to start buying weapons.
PS: sane people said the same to another one of your heroes: don’t shoot peaceful protesters or else they’ll start arming themselves and fight back and he shot and killed them by the dozens every day and they bought weapons and shot back.
        But you never listen!!!

        2. First of all have some respect for our army….second of all the lack of respect you show for our army is exactly why the people you support in those areas which always seem to be the same areas shoot at and kill our troops for no reason and drag their bodies through the streets….thirdly the reason our army will not be armed is because israel will not allow it….there are agreements with israel and the americans that countries in the middle east especially those bordering it are not allowed to be sold weapons that can be used against israel even if they are defensive weapons….fourthly the lebanese army has been offered weapons from the likes of russia and iran ( even nasrallah has asked for the leb army to be armed properly even if it means getting it from the black market)…fifth and i know im wasting my time with you when people like you stop being racist just because one dosent agree with your or is simply trying to make you understand then our army will be given the respect it deserves…..whats even more sad is the bulk of our army is from the same areas that the trouble always seems to be coming from…..see unlike you the army does not see colours even though you do. Finally you want to talk about justice….how about along with eid they re arrest the mayor of arsal who is out on bail along with his son after being charged with with murdering our troops and dragging them through the streets? Comeon keep blaming the world for all your problems….Your beloved rifi who was a former isf chief has even formed his own militia now……

1- The LAF is not an army, it’s a band of loose mercenaries feeding on the government dime that will disband if Mar Elias fireworks get too loud.
2- Lack of respect is what they deserve at most, it’s respecting them enough by giving them a name they certainly don’t deserve.
3- Nowhere have I even mentioned that I support such people, all I said is that their appearance is natural and sequentially logical. We said years ago that these people will eventually appear if the imbalance and the injustice in the country remains – Your camp refused to listen. Deal with them now. We talked and when no one listened we walked… wou battikh ykassir ba3do (and that’s exactly what’s happening today).
4- If the LAF was a responsible and national institution backed by stable and sensible political class (and not by a government ran by a terrorist organization) not only would they receive advanced weapons but they’ll get it from the US itself.
5- The bulk of the army is from… where? so you’re confirming what I’m saying that the army and its personnel are “linked” to some areas and therefor their allegiances are for their respective areas not for the country.
6- For someone who’s so proud of the army you know NOTHING about the LAF. Did you run away when your Syrian friend dictated the draft in the 90s and 00s or did you escape the draft by training with the resistance? Because if you have served in the army you would have noticed that the very first thing another soldier wants to know is which sect you’re from. No colors hahahaha
7- If anything I mentioned injustice and not justice. There hasn’t been justice in Lebanon for as long as I remember. All I said is that the present situation is the result of all this “injustice”.
8- Arrest Eid, arrest arsal mayor, arrest the 5 suspects, arrest every single Lebanese for all I care. Every Lebanese behind the bar is one less crook on the streets of this fine earth. Said it loud before and repeat it louder right now!
9- I’m not blaming anyone as I personally have no problems at all, knock on wood. Again all I’m stating is the truth and all I see happening is what was predicted years ago…

          2. Thats all we will be getting.

This is Islam: Eliminating the other who thinks and believes otherwise, or should I say Sunni Islam (since I do not believe the shiaa or the alawite or the druze are there to eliminate anybody). This said I am against the tyrant Bashar, who is also using the same tactics of eliminating the other.

What a joke, a man who lives in tripoli gets killed by masked gunmen how long after the bombing of the mosques? How long after the jabal tebeneh gunfight?

For all we know this could be the dirty work of hezballah in order to give march 14 bad public opinion and justify the parties actions in syria and to take the focus off suleiman visiting saudi arabia.
Notice how even iran is abit jealous overnight politicians woke up and decided to open more nuclear sites (ofcourse after theyve had time to hide things)

The syrian government killed sheikh albouti and blamed it on the opposition so these killings and mind games are second nature in their agenda. TAQIYA.
Now nasrallah is on TV justifying the presence in syria and the gunmen havnt even been unmasked hahaha what a joke.

Anybody else notice whenever there a diplomatic gains made which work against hezballah or the syrian government “masked gunmen or unidentified people” do something and israel or takfiris are to blame?
