suleiman def 3Lebanese president Michel Suleiman urged Saturday all political factions to to put the country’s interest first, abide by the Baabda declaration and disassociate Lebanon from regional interests .

He also called for the formation of a new cabinet and the resumption of national dialogue talks

“Amid all the dangers threatening the country, I call on all factions without any exception to disassociate Lebanon from regional interests,” Suleiman said in a televised speech on Saturday night.

“I urge putting national interests first,” he added.

The president’s statement comes one day after two deadly explosions in the northern city of Tripoli that targeted 2 mosques , killing at least 45 people and wounding 900 others.

Suleiman considered that forming a new cabinet and taking part in national dialogue sessions “would prevent divisions and fighting in the country.”

“Participation in national dialogue should be done without any previously set conditions,” he remarked.

He also urged political and religious figures in the country to moderate their speeches.

“They must all go back to adopting and abiding by the Baabda Declaration, to secure the higher national interest and to be in harmony with the stance of the majority of the Lebanese.”

He ordered the military and security authorities to “maximize the level of alert and to pursue criminals and terrorists that are threatening the security and the safety of the Lebanese.”

Suleiman also urged the media to assume their responsibility and face the current stage in Lebanon with courage.

He offer his condolences to the families of the victims in Tripoli’s explosions .

Addressing the Lebanese people , Suleiman said they should “preserve their unity and solidarity.”

“We also call on the citizens to cooperate with security organizations and to report any suspicious activities that might threaten public safety,” he added.

Suleiman ended his speech warning against the country turning into a “victim in the international game.”

“The collapse of Lebanon terminates the idea of religious coexistence between different sects and threatens the presence of diversity.”

Prior to his speech, Suleiman had discussed the latest security developments in the country with caretaker premier Najib Mikati, caretaker Interior Minister Marwan Charbel and several security officials.

Amen!!! I hope someone will listen. Here is my take on the current situation in Lebanon: zuballah faction and their leader zabrallah on one hand and the anti syrian regime activists are not treating Lebanon as their country, the facts are why would someone wants to destroy his mother land. They are acting on the behest of iran and saudi arabia and fighting a proxy war in the Lebanese arena. Lebanon should stay out of syria’s affair, unfortunately NOT. The Lebanese politicians are part of the problem since they are driven by arms and monetary compensation and elevated among the poor citizens who are then led just like you lead a herd of sheep. The recent bombings and the despicable destruction and loss of lives is uncalled for. Shame on the political and spiritual leaders who incite shiites against shiites, sunnis against sunnis, christians against christians and then an all out war with more human losses. The real enemy it seems is not israel but the various islamic factions killing each other. NONSENSE

Thank you, here is the irony: right after the bombing in dahieh and tripoli, the leaders pointed the fingers at israel. Yet, we are finding the the culprit(s) is/are from within as either operative for iran or syria. Unfortunately, they live in denial and use israel as a scapegoat and avoid reality. Years ago the talk was about the liberation of palestine, today the debate is how to curb israel from expansion, while the war is raging in syria, egypt, iraq and so on. Well if really this is the doing of the israeli intelligence, then these cowardly leaders should emerge from their rat holes and say it so and not capitalize on the death of the innocent to warrant their existence. Every faction in lebanon has it’s own political agenda, I might want to add that besides the factions you have the various tribal traditions who by far are the lowest on the totem pole when it comes to politics. They are ideologists influenced and act upon their imams and sheiks, that scares the heck out of me since they take the law in their own hands.

The world is full of these ‘gangs’ … backwoods boys, tribes, mafia, bikers, neo-nazi supremacists, shabiha … etc, etc, …. some spouting religion and some not … some in family and some only related by deeds … most not connected to any thoughts of ‘country’ or freedom of thought. Most ‘miss’ or never educated – some of them incapable of being educated beyond what their ‘tribes’ dictate – or what some poor brains can absorb.
Only a valid government, valid laws, and a real policing policy, which acts equally for and in a ‘society’ which has democratically decided those laws, keeps gangs out of the limelight in most places and out of most citizen’s lives.
Lebanon’s ‘Style’ of theoretical democracy – equal religious dictatorships – allows them to shine and thrive. It’s unique, that ‘Confessional Parliamentary Democracy’ with both a Prime Minister and a President … where no-one confesses anything … and ‘Gang’ comes before ‘Country’. The ‘theory’ that it stopped 25 years of ‘gang warfare’ has become another obvious lie.
All of them pray to God/Allah on Friday, Saturday, Sunday … the rest of the week is ‘free’ to abuse….
I seem to see the ‘education’ goes on … my feeling on it.
