moscow subway fireA fire broke out at a subway station near the Kremlin during the Wednesday morning rush hour, prompting the evacuation of thousands of commuters, Russia’s RIA Novosti news agency said.

The fire broke out in a tunnel between the Biblioteka Imeni Lenina and Okhotny Ryad, two stations of the Moscow Metro’s oldest Sokolnicheskaya line, the agency said.

“A power cable caught fire, evacuation is underway,” the Russian emergencies ministry’s press office told the agency.
It wasn’t clear exactly how many people were injured.

RIA Novosti said one passenger suffered from smoke inhalation. The Interfax news agency said the injured numbered 12.

    Shit happens anywhere. Sucking in burning-plastic fumes can be as bad as Sarin Gas … although it’s usually a less-planned event and is localized.
