Coronavirus Shows Up In Italy

coronavirusNow a virus that has caused respiratory failure and 30 deaths has turned up in Italy.

The World Health Organization says lab tests have confirmed the infections in a 2-year-old girl and a 42-year-old woman with the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus, or MERS-CoV, as it’s now called.

Both of the patients, who are in stable condition, are close contacts of someone who traveled to Jordan recently, the WHO says.

Illnesses caused by the virus have originated in Jordan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, WHO says. In France, Germany, Italy, Tunisia and the United Kingdom, there have been additional cases seen in people who had traveled in the Middle East or who’d been in close contact with someone who had.

All told, there have been 53 cases where lab tests have showed conclusively that the virus was to blame, WHO says.

A recent French report on two cases (one involving a man who had traveled to Dubai and the other in a man who shared his hospital room) indicates that the incubation period for the virus may be as long as nine to 12 days, rather than one to nine days. That suggests that any quarantine of infected people may have to be prolonged to limit the spread of the virus.

WHO says doctors and hospitals should take care to prevent the spread of MERS-CoV by observing infection prevention and control measures.

Dr. Margaret Chan, WHO’s director-general, recently called the virus “a threat to the entire world.” Why? “We understand too little about this virus when viewed against the magnitude of its potential threat,” she said. “Any new disease that is emerging faster than our understanding is never under control.”

Although the coronavirus remains mysterious, there are some clues about its origin. An analysis of its genetic material last September found that it most closely resembled coronaviruses known to infect bats in Southeast Asia.

Close all the borders to and from Arabia… It will solve a lot of problems including terrorism.

Lebanon is not ‘safe’ for many reasons … and Hezzys better hope they had their ‘shots’ – although, for some things, there may not be a ‘cheap’ cure. There is more truth in the phrase ‘Syrian Disease’ than realized .. citizens beware. It’s coming to you.

“All the risk factors that enhance the transmission of communicable diseases in emergencies are present in the current crisis in Syria and its neighbouring countries,” said Dr Jaouad Mahjour, director of the department for communicable diseases at the WHO’s regional office for the Eastern Mediterranean.
“We are anticipating a number of public health risks from water-borne diseases, specifically hepatitis, typhoid, cholera and dysentery.
“Given the scale of population movement both inside Syria and across borders, together with deteriorating environmental health conditions, outbreaks are inevitable.”

        Vaccination problems
The WHO says cases of measles have reappeared in Syria, due to problems running national vaccination campaigns.
The number of confirmed cases of measles in the first quarter of 2013 reached 139, compared with no cases in the whole of 2010 and 2011, says the WHO.
There have also been reports of measles, tuberculosis and cutaneous leishmaniasis – a disease carried by insects – among displaced Syrians in Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq and Turkey.
“Jordan had previously reported zero cases of measles for three years, and was planning to officially declare that it was measles-free,” said Dr Mahjour.
“The situation will deteriorate if prevention and control measures are not scaled up soon.”

Two years of intense fighting in Syria have wrecked its healthcare system, according to medical charity Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF).
MSF (Doctors Without Borders) said in a report that hospitals, doctors and patients had come under direct attack, and many trained medical staff had fled abroad.
One-third of public hospitals are no longer functioning and healthcare has been forced underground, MSF said.
The charity has more than 200 staff working in rebel-held areas of Syria.
It said repeated requests to the government for wider access had not been granted.

Despite its limited access, the charity said it had carried out more than 20,000 consultations and 1,560 surgical procedures since the start of the conflict in March 2011.
It has also opened three hospitals in opposition-held northern regions.
But MSF said the conflict had “made a mockery of the concept of healthcare”.
“Medical aid is being targeted, hospitals destroyed and medical personnel captured,” said MSF’s Dr Marie-Pierre Allie

‘The exodus of trained medical staff had left inexperienced workers trying to provide care, the charity said.
“Dentists are performing minor surgeries, pharmacists are treating patients and young people are volunteering to work as nurses,” the report said.
Doctors had been labelled “enemies of the state” for treating the injured and both sides were now using hospitals as a war strategy, MSF said.
While government air raids targeted medical facilities, the rebels had begun to label their facilities “Free Syrian Army hospitals”, increasing the risk of attack.
Increasingly, medical care has been forced underground, with makeshift hospitals set up in caves, homes and farms.
But MSF says these facilities are still being targeted in air raids.’
