U.N. may impose sanctions against Qaeda-linked Syria rebels

The U.N. Security Council has begun informal talks on whether to impose sanctions on Syria’s rebel al-Nusra Front after it pledged allegiance to al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahri this week, France said on Friday.

The militant Islamist element of the Syrian conflict poses a quandary for Western powers and their Arab allies, which favor the overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad but are alarmed by Sunni Muslim jihadi fighters whose fiercely anti-Shi’ite ideology has fuelled sectarian tensions in the Middle East.

Speaking to reporters, French foreign ministry spokesman Philippe Lalliot said given Wednesday’s announcement by Nusra chief Abu Mohammad al-Golani it was logical to look at how to deal with the Syrian group in the framework of the “fight against terrorism”.

“One option is to act at the U.N. Security Council … through the al Qaeda 1267 sanctions committee ,” he said.

“It is one solution that we are studying and discussing informally with our U.N. Security Council partners and European allies,” he said.

He said talks were still at a very early stage.

Potential sanctions could include assets being frozen and travel bans. The U.S. State Department in December designated the group a foreign terrorist organization.

Experts have long said Nusra was receiving support from al Qaeda-linked insurgents in neighboring Iraq. The group has claimed responsibility for deadly bombings in Damascus and Aleppo, and its fighters have joined other rebel brigades in attacks on Assad’s forces.

At least 70,000 people have been killed since protests led by Syria’s Sunni Muslim majority broke out two years ago against Assad, who belongs to the minority Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shi’ite Islam.

Assad has repeatedly said the rebels are Islamists funded and armed by Turkey and Sunni Muslim Gulf Arab states and with Nusra now pledging allegiance to Qaeda he may feel emboldened.

Lalliot said he had seen a report the Syrian government had sent a letter to the same sanctions committee on Thursday to ask for Nusra to be added to the list. But he said the demand had still not been formally made.

“These are statements made by Syrian officials,” Lalliot said. “One thing is for sure. When the request is officially made, France will refuse any attempt by the Syrian regime that tries through this to label all the Syrian opposition as terrorists.”

Then from what I understand the UN will impose sanction on the Syrian Regime and on the Opposition (represented by Al-Nusra)….This is becoming like a joke (like the stories of “Jeha”). If only these fanatics did not get involved in the Syrian opposition, it would have been much simpler and easier for the world to help Syrians get rid of Assad and establish a more democratic state.

This is the reason the criminal always need a fanatic to pursue its agenda. Wasnt the Al-Qaeda supposedly orchestrated the 911, london 7/7 bombing from an Afghan cave ? Wasnt this Iman Al Zawaheri took responsibility and praised these attacks? Osama didnt accept any responsibility though but with a series of audio and video the west tried to make the connection.

Now let me quote your words “it would have been much simpler and easier for the world to help Syrians get rid of Assad and establish a more democratic state” Yeah sounds acceptable but why on earth the UN and the European and the American would ever help the Syrian sunnis? Isnt it clear that both invasion in Iraq and in Afghanistan resulted the overthrow of the sunni regime with the direct help of Iran and installed Shia regime ? And again in Libya with the direct help of Iran and Bashar Al Assad the NATO installed another pro Iranian regime?

Now If America help the sunni resistance in Syria wont it be equvalant to shot in the foot? Wasnt Mr. Hafez Al Assad send his army to help America against Saddam ? Do you remember that many sunni mujaheddin were captured in Iraq and was send in Syrian torture cell? Dont we know that American/Irani puppet in Iraq Nuri al Maliki support Bashar Al Assad and we also know that American biggest embassy is in Iraq and there are still 50000 american solders there and this number will be maintained as long as necessary?

So its a BIG NO for america UN or Europe to stop the Syrian bloodshed. Do you remember how quickly they invaded Iraq ,Afghanistan and even recently Mali? Why not then Syria?

If there were no Al-Qaeda then how would america and other western country justify their invasion? And now if there is no Al-Qaeda in Syria then the world is obliged to help the Syrian rebel. Who can turn the situation against the Syrian rebel ? ANSWER: Al-Qaeda. Now we have Al-Qaeda in Syria therefore sending arms in Syria means helping Al-Qaeda. I hope you understand the conflict of interest. Do you know that Al-Qaeda is a Iranian sponsored group? I have some news based on the US research in my next post

Thank you Wargame for your extensive explanation, but although we agree on getting rid of Assad, we may not agree on many other issues. Some of these is that I don’t believe that the past necessarily repeats itself with your story of Taqqyuddin Nabahani, second your extreme devotion to islam (specifically sunni islam) and, as expected, relating politics, war actions and religion all together (as it is taught in islam), I do not agree with at all. You know that I am commenting as a christian, and christianity, as you know, has fundamental differences with Islam.
But to go back to the tyrant Assad, I agree with you that the muslim fanatics in Syria are playing Assad’s game in delaying his departure.

Neat answer, Constantin … and I think most of us agree that striving to stay in an historical dark past helps none. For some, America, or any other ‘Big Devil’ will always be the reason for it; as well as the reason that some wish to arrive also into a better future. In both cases, ‘Visionaries’ without reality. Some humans move on …
In 2000 more years, there will be two guys sitting in an oxygen-mine on Mars arguing over the arrival of a Messia who will bring a permanent breathable atmosphere to the place without enough sunlight to keep it going there. One of them will probably have a ‘tech-tool’ in his cell-phone to tell him which way he has to bow to be pointed at Mecca every day. 😉
The other guy will fiddle with the device, and aim it at Pluto. The first guy will never understand the humour … but IF no-one tells him, there will be ‘peace in their mine’. :-))))

In February 2012 US Treasury Dept. designated Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS) for its support of al Qaeda and al Qaeda in Iraq (AQI). Then, in July 2012, the US State Department highlighted the relationship between Iran and al Qaeda in its annual Country Reports on Terrorism publication.Google this “Treasury ‘further exposes’ Iran-al Qaeda relationship” By THOMAS JOSCELYNOctober 18, 2012

Too much Al-Qaeda propaganda can backfire on Bashar and Iran.Top Al-Qaeda Leaders fled from Afghanistan to Iran after the US invasion and Iran let them stay as a house guest. The family member of Osama Bin Laden also live in Iran.Recently Iran has been expelling al Qaeda officials who holed up there for years.Bin Laden’s son-in-law Sulaiman Abu Ghaith is only the latest example.USA and EU must get out of this dirty conspiracy by Iran where both Sunnis and the Europeans are being victimized

The US Treasury Department announced that it has designated Adel Radi Saqr al Wahabi al Harbi, who is “a key member of an al Qaeda network operating in Iran and led by Iran-based al Qaeda facilitator Muhsin al Fadhli.” This same network was previously headed by another al Qaeda operative, Yasin al Suri, but al Fadhli took over as chief of al Qaeda’s Iran-based network in late 2011.It is Iran and Israel who benefitted from 911 false flag operation and now we see that Iran operate this group

These are the findings of US government so dont just blow it by saying conspiracy theory. Now you see who benefits from Al-Qaeda and when Al-Qaeda is necessary.

Before we come to conclusion we need to dig out some information about a supposed sunni movement called “Hezbuttahrir” If you know the back ground of this group then you may do some critical thinking on Al-Nusra Alqaeda and their link to Hezbuttahrir.

Hezbuttahrir founder Taqyuddin Nabahani was a sufi from both his maternal and paternal side who was born in Palestine. He was a Baath Party member and later form his own group based on the communist Ideology. He is a sycophant who wanted to establish Khelafa in 13 Years and failed in the 1950s.

This cult Hezbbuttahrir do not believe the existence of Dajjal (The Antichrist) and they also curse the Sahabas (companion of the Prophet) at the same time they have good relationship with the Iranian regime!!!!!!!!!!

These group are the one who promote AlQaeda movement and praise 911 attack and also take responsibility! Now a days we see that most of the Alqaeda member live in Iran as a house guest under the care of the Iranian regime. The Rafida ideology and Hezbuttahrir are like the two sides of the same coin. The Syrian Mujaheddin is fighting the Shia stooge Bashar Al-Qaeda where as Iran ,Hezbushaitan are trying hard to save this minority Shia regime.

Taqyauddin Nabahani and his cult pretend to be sunnis and by doing this they are able to recruit the young sunni foot solders with a sufi brainwash. Their head office is in the UK and also have a “sharia court” under the nose of the British Government!! Now this will be a fight from three direction and this group Al-Qaeda is calling for Islamic state Khelafa etc in order to fool the sunnis. This is plan B for Iran and Muslim Brotherhood as you CAN NOT pursue the sunnis to believe in 12 Imam who is supposedly hiding in a cave for thousand years! As the sunni interprete that character as the AntiChrist(Dajjal). Well since we have Al-Qaeda then there is no help from the west and the west infact making this NUSRA group popular and imposing on the sunnis as their leader the same time finding a valid excuse not to arm the rebel and indirectly buying more time for Assad. This will utterly backfire in the end.
