Pope Francis is setting an example for leaders

pope francis 3Pope Francis has decided to shun a grand papal apartment on the top floor of the Vatican’s Apostolic Palace in favour of a modest two-room residence.

His spokesman said he was “trying out this type of simple living” in a communal building with other priests.

In doing so he has broken a tradition which is more than a century old.

The decision reinforces the newly-elected Pope’s austere reputation. As archbishop of Buenos Aires he refused to move into the Bishop’s Palace.

Preferring more modest accommodation, he also often cooked his own meals.

Communal meals

Since the reign of Pope Pius X at the beginning of the 20th Century every pope has occupied the palatial penthouse apartment with more than a dozen rooms, staff quarters, a terrace and extensive views over the city of Rome.

But since his election Pope Francis has been living in a simple two-room suite in the Domus Santa Marta – a hotel-style residence built by his predecessor Pope John Paul II next to St Peter’s Basilica.

And he intends to go on living there for the foreseeable future, according to the Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi.

“This morning he let his fellow cardinals know that he will keep living with them for a certain period of time,” Mr Lombardi said.

He said he could not say whether the Pope would remain in these quarters in the long term.

“It is still a period of getting used to things,” Mr Lombardi added.

Pope Francis will continue to use the papal library on the second floor of the Apostolic palace for receiving official guests and will appear on Sundays at the window used by previous popes to address pilgrims in St Peters Square.

About half the 105 suites in the residence are occupied by Vatican staff, who had to move out of their rooms to accommodate visiting cardinals during the holding of the recent conclave at which Pope Francis was elected.

The Pope will take his meals in the communal dining room together with other visiting clerics and permanent residents.

His simple new communal home contrasts with the much larger accommodation currently being renovated inside the Vatican for the future use of the now retired former Pope Benedict and his staff, reports the BBC’s David Willey in Rome.

I don’t know why you feel personnaly targeted JJ
You seem to be a fervent defender of the Church and for good reasons, I won’t deny its influence on the world and history. But today things changed and this same church that was the spearhead of evolution for centuries is finding it hard to catch up to an increasingly powerful civil society. Which brings us to the main moral issue facing the church today: its clergy’s CULTURE of child molestation. I say culture because what we know today thanks to a stronger media has been happening for millenia in the clergy, this is not new, pedophilia has always been rampant at ALL levels of the clergy pyramid.
What was the response of the Church? Hide, evade, conceal and lately… change the subject. When the Catholic world is waiting for a Pope to take courageous actions to reform and save the church comes Pope Francis repeating the oldest message of the church: let’s help the poor.
      Why thank you Pope!
Great speech that revived the Catholic in me!
The same one that decided a long time ago to quit going to church!
PS: While I personnaly was not molested by a priest, it would be nice of you not to make jokes on such victims. Think of the damage these “holy men” did to children who trusted them blindly when they walked them behind the altar to “show them something” – Shame!!!

Had they been allowed to marry, it’s more than likely the ‘molestation level’ wouldn’t be any different than it is in general societies – although, perhaps, on a percentage basis, maybe it isn’t.
It’s only that a ‘man of god’ is supposed to be even better than a football coach or a scout-leader.
Another ‘fable’ of the religious, I suppose….

I really wish they’d be courageous about it and reform that old and obsolete church, give it a new meaning, come up with a modern message. Elsewise I don’t think Catholisism will see the end of the century, the numbers don’t lie (can’t say the same thing about the church)

Pope Francis is a very humble man. He prefers to live a simple life even though he can have and is offered all the things that he wishes. He is a good example of a person who lives on only what he needs and not on what he wants. We can really learn something from him. Thank you for sharing this article!

The message of “help the poor” dates 2,000 years and as much as we want to hear it, we really need to see it. Moving from a lavish appartment to a 2 bedroom is great but it’s not solving poverty in the world. I’ll believe him and learn something from him when I’ll see the church under his rule giving back to the poor what it took over 2 millenia from poor minds.

Oh great let us punish this one good man for all the bad deeds of humanity… May be you’re right let’s even crucify him to show God’s love is eternal…

This is all very nice, but we all know that all this talk about the poor is just a smoke screen to hide the real problem of the church: the pervs that hide behind their robes to molest children. This is what Catholics around the world are waiting for him to talk about and take actions against. Unfortunately up until this day Pope Francis is still mum over the issue. The hour is grave for the Vatican and instead of tackling the problem they are changing the narrative… poor or rich, not sending my kids to church for them to be the sex toys of the clergy.

Agree with you 100%, However be careful, the last time I spoke some truth about the Vatican, Master09 went on the offensive and did all he can to defend them. Although I must admit, this Pope does come across a little different.

Mekenseh you do not know what you are talking about.
The problems of the Catholics are universal… They made the mistake of solving them internally and not involving the authorities. THAT IS ONE… SECOND the church was a magnet for pedophiles and not the other way around. Unmarried people do not turn pedophiles. It is sick bastards who saw opportunity to hide in the church and a lot of kids serve as altar boys where the incidence happened and the Jewish media had a feast with it. Clergy are not pedophiles. It is like saying if you have never married you will turn to kids… How sick is that? Pedophiles are like that… born like that with a malady. They cannot be treated. They have to be stopped. The church learned its lesson and payed a hefty price for it. Let it go.
I wonder who wins when you are not sending your kids to church? Your kids or the pedophiles? Ask yourself that…

A simple life by choice and hard work to leave the kind of life he was raised to live. When he was a beginning priest, Father Jorge, he phoned me to explain that he was raised to take control of everything as an italian he was making people angry and that he would have to leave the priesthood;but,he asked me if I could make him Nice Jorge( he lowered his voice for Nice Jorge). I said yes that I could help. So we set a schedule of every tuesday evening, thursday optional, he phoned me and I taught him one or more kind of situation that he may someday have trouble if he used his normal bossy way. I started with some of the cultures iwhere he was a priest at that time-Brasil and worked outward from there. When I was 10 years old President Eisenhower and ex-president Truman had started me as a troubleshooter in South America, helping whoever had small or medium trouble, never really any big trouble because I settled small fights before they got big. I was very good at the various languages there. With Father Jorge I spread out to all the major cultures around the Earth over 8-10 years, explaining about their ways. Easy for me, I had already advised and helped every head of state. Working well with new people was a normal trait to me- I taught Jorge well. When he came out on the balcony the first time He used one method of meeting new people that I had taught him about over and over- ask for them to help him. That shows them respect, the respect of an important man asking something of them. I have seen him use one other important method when he thinks he should stay out of something- “Who am I to say”. When he had started to stop his bossy and meddling italian ways he had to have something to say- “Who am I to say” fits the situation perfect- not insulting by avoiding the situation, just not the person to be asking. Now I do not see a Pope- I think that is my friend Nice Jorge.
