The Syndicate Coordination Committee, a coalition of private and public school teachers and public sector employees staged sit-ins on Thursday outside various state administration offices to protest the government’s delay in approving a salary increase, National News Agency reported.

The cabinet met Wednesday but decided to postpone discussions until Thursday after failing to agree on a solution for the issue of the ranks and salaries .

The Syndicate Coordination Committee decided to call for a strike despite the promise by the PM to take up the issue on Thursday.

The main problem facing the cabinet is finding the funds needed for the wage increases.

Lebanon is a very heavily indebted nation and any additional budget deficit as a result of the wage increase could result in more downgrading by the international credit agencies which could lead to an increase in the interest amount Lebanon will have to pay on future borrowing .
