Charbel: Ending Assir’s sit-in beyond our power

Lebanon Interior Minister Marwan Charbel told Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Anbaain remarks published on Tuesday that ending the Sidon sit-in held by Sheikh Ahmad Assir, was beyond his capacity and that of the cabinet and the society.

“Removing the sit-in in Sidon requires a political cover that is more difficult to provide than what was needed for resolving clashes in Tripoli or for opening the airport road,” Charbel said .

Charbel urged the political and military forces to “bear their responsibilities and stop blaming the Ministry of Interior.

The stated goal of the sit-in by Assir, the charismatic 44-year-old Salafist cleric is to bring the Shiite militant group Hezbollah’s vast, independent arsenal of weapons under the control of the government.

The sit-in, is raising concern among the Lebanese that the country’s fragile sectarian balance is unraveling – an alarming prospect in a country which has yet to fully recover from a bloody, 15-year civil war.

Hezbollah, which was credited with liberating Lebanese territories from Israel in 2000 was a very popular organization in Lebanon and throughout the Arab world. But according to analysts ever since its 2006 war with Israel, Hezbollah has become the main liability for Lebanon. In 2006 Hezbollah’s arms were used to try and bring down the government of former PM Fouad Siniora. In 2008 Hezbollah pointed its guns against the Lebanese people when it occupied more than half of Beirut and tried but failed to occupy Mt Lebanon . In 2011 it brought down the government of former PM Saad Hariri and reportedly used its arms to force progressive socialist party leader MP Walid Jumblatt and his parliamentary bloc to vote for their candidate Nagib Mikati as the new premier . Hezbollah’s continued use of its arms internally to intimidate the Lebanese and its current support for the Syrian and Iranian regimes are major concerns for the Lebanese people, analysts say. Analysts also blame Hezbollah’s extremism for the emergence of the Salafists in Lebanon who are considered Sunni extremists.

    OH DEAR CHARBEL I SINCERELY HOPE THIS CAN BE GIVEN THE EXCUSE THAT IT WAS TAKEN OUT OF CONTEXT???? if this was happening in new york,sydney,paris,or manchester he would have been forceably removed by now what makes us any better????

    I guess this means ALL religious factions can have sit-ins anywhere they want to. Everyone is equal, right? 😉

     The 24 Lebanese religious sit-ins blocking various roads and tourist attractions was added to today by the small but joyful ‘5th Minaret Of Scotch’. (An off-shoot of the ‘Holy Bodies of Diversity’ Sect. which follows the writings  of their Prophet ‘Nudealot’. (Ref: Books such as ‘God made Us in His Image – We stay This Way’, etc.))
    Waving their Purple Banners they were led by their preacher Wannabe Nudealottwo to the Best Lebanese Beaches at the western ends of the airport, (runways 45&69) where they set up purple tents and picnic tables, and laid down on bamboo tanning mats to block police dune-buggys.
    Speaking to the Press, Nudealottwo said they are protesting the fact the best beaches anywhere are being made inaccessible to the public because of an obscure and old airport law that says people should not gather to watch planes land on runways. He claims that the odds on anyone being hurt while lying on their backs at the end of a runway to experience a plane going overhead are negligible, and that the authorities have no right to keep people from using the beaches there. ‘The spiritual rush here is available no-where else.’, he said through his megaphone.
    There is a furthur demand that a paved foot-path to the beach area be installed as soon as paving crews can get by the other sit-ins.
    Reporters flocking to the scene – while complaining of sand in their shoes – have noticed the crowd of supporters grows by the hour. Other Sects are complaining to the Cabinet about this. They claim Many have left other sit-ins, and indeed there seems to be several converting to ‘Bodies Of Diversity’ worship.
    (This reporter was allowed exclusive coverage …. Conversion is a mystical process whereby the adherents must be baptized while lying on a purple-bamboo prayer-mat at the end of the runway while being anointed in tanning-oil surrounded by 6 of the faithful of the opposite sex chanting ancient dialogues; after which they must lie there until the first take-off over their heads occurs; concluded by an obviously joyful run to the sea while the congregation lifts a glass or two.)
    The Cabinet has promised to look into it, and several ministers have volunteered to observe, but their main concern is that food and water (and tanning oil) being supplied from gathering fishing boats is Halal and safe to use – although Nudealottwo says they will eat anything offered, as their Scotch supply should take care of any unfriendly microbes.
    Nudealottwo also claims there is no impact on the environment beyond some damp and smelly disturbed sand at a location downwind from the main protest. ‘Holy Bodies of Diversity’ believes in the ecology.
    The group uses ‘sun-ovens’ for cooking, and has solar collectors to supply battery packs. Indeed, after only two days encamped there, their night-lighting is brighter than most of Beirut, and relaxing music drifts over the airport. Cabinet members have promised to look into this, when they have finished their observing.
    Nudealottwo says they will stay until their demands are met – just like all other sects – or the beginning of October, whichever comes first.

    If AssirShyton blocks the  Sidon boardwalk road… He will have a problem that would mean he blocked both roads that lead to south Lebanon…. Then the people of south Lebanon will make him run back into his cave rat hole he came out of… By any means necessary, that’s what Saudi Arabia wants… He threatened to do on his last speech.. It will happen soon…. Jazzine Marjayoun and the entire South should put this Wahhabi Salafi extremist Saudi puppet back into his cave…. He states lots of sectarianism in his speeches…
