Druze spiritual leader Sheikh Akl Naim Hassan condemned the murder of Sunni cleric Sheikh Ahmad Abdel Wahid on Sunday, National News Agency reported.
“ I call on everyone to practice self-restraint , calm down and be [wise],” NNA quoted Hassan as saying.
Hassan offered his condolences to Dar el Fatwa , called for punishing the perpetrators “no matter who they are,” and urged the Lebanese army not to allow the strife to reach Lebanon for the sake of unity and civil peace.
Sheikh Abdel Wahid was killed at an army checkpoint in the Akkar town of al-Kweikhat on Sunday .
The cleric was scheduled to make a speech at a Jamaa al-Islamiya rally in Halba. The event has since been called off.
The rally was to mark the May 2008 events when the Iranian and Syrian backed Hezbollah militant group and its allies occupied the western part of Beirut and tried but failed to occupy Mt Lebanon.
