Hezbollah’s Relentless Rage

Share:

By Michael J. Totten

The only reason Israel has been able to survive in the Middle East, and even to flourish there, is because its enemies’ armies are incompetent. When asked how and why Israelis win every battle, the celebrated general Moshe Dayan said it’s because they fight Arabs. “We’re a feuding people, not a warring people,” Lebanese historian Kamal Salibi said to me once in Beirut. “We haven’t been good at war for hundreds of years.” If Arabs could fight as effectively as, say, the Russians, Israel would have ceased to exist long ago. Most likely it would have died before its first birthday. Syrian and Egyptian armies tried three times to destroy the Jewish state, and the Jordanian army tried twice. Hamas and the Palestine Liberation Organization have spent decades harassing Israel with terrorist, guerrilla, and low-level rocket attacks, but they’ve never come close to threatening the country’s existence.

Hezbollah—Lebanon’s Syrian- and Iranian-sponsored Party of God—is different. Hezbollah is the most formidable non-state army in the world and by far the deadliest and most effective fighting force ever fielded against Israel. And it’s just as sworn to Israel’s destruction as the would-be conquerors of the past. Nicholas Blanford’s gripping new book, Warriors of God, explains in peerless detail how Hezbollah grew into such a major force.

It began as a shadowy, ragtag terrorist-guerrilla group during the crucible of Lebanon’s civil war. After Israel’s withdrawal from South Lebanon in 2000, Hezbollah transformed itself into a wholly original hybrid of guerrilla army and conventional army. The Party of God’s partisans didn’t even have their own name in the early years. They made themselves famous with hostage-taking and airplane hijackings, but their most potent innovation—which transformed the face of the region—was the suicide bomber.

In November 1982, Imad Mughniyah, who would later become Hezbollah’s most skilled and hunted commander, told Fatah member Bilal Sharara he had found someone willing to blow himself up. “I laughed and thought he was crazy,” Sharara told Blanford. “Who would want to blow themselves up? No one had done anything like that at the time.” Suicide bombers are dangerous, but they’re weapons of the weak: it would be 18 years before the last Israeli soldier evacuated the “security zone” in South Lebanon. As the anti-Israel insurgency ground on, though, Hezbollah tacticians and fighters acquired better weapons and the skills to use them.

The Party of God hasn’t yet outworn its designation as a terrorist group—the United Nations accuses it of killing Lebanon’s former prime minister, Rafik Hariri, for instance—but it rarely resorts anymore to al Qaida-style attacks. Hezbollah now has an enormous rocket arsenal with the power not only to kill civilians in Israel, but also to sink Israeli ships and to blow up supposedly indestructible Merkava tanks with swarms of missiles.

During the 2006 war, Hezbollah fought Israeli ground troops with a highly sophisticated mixture of guerrilla and conventional tactics. “The resistance,” Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah boasted, “did not wage a guerrilla war. . . I want to clarify this point; it was not a regular army, but [it] was not a guerrilla [army] in the traditional sense, either. It was something in between.” Blanford quotes an Army War College study bolstering the Hezbollah chief’s claim. “Hezbollah’s position on the guerrilla-conventional continuum in 2006,” it said, “was much closer to the conventional end of the scale than non-state actors are normally expected to be.”

Today, Hezbollah’s rocket and missile arsenal is larger than that of most national armies. Not only does it stock thousands of relatively weak Katyusha rockets in bunkers, houses, and hillside launch sites; it also has ballistic missiles that can blow skyscrapers off the map in Tel Aviv. Its conventional strength means that it can now wreak far more havoc than a mere terrorist organization, but its well-honed guerrilla tactics make it just as hard to defeat.

Hezbollah scored its great victory in forcing the withdrawal of exhausted Israelis from their “security zone” in South Lebanon. It was the first time, arguably, that the Jewish state lost a war. Hezbollah, though, was never solely interested in the liberation of land. Its war of “unrelenting hostility,” as Blanford puts it, was always about the destruction of Israel. “The ‘resistance,’” he writes, “is Hezbollah’s beating heart, its one immutable defining certainty.” The Party of God said so explicitly in its first manifesto, the Open Letter of 1985, and Nasrallah has repeated that promise ever since he became the militia’s leader. “The elimination of Israel from existence,” he said in February of 2008, “is inevitable because this is a historical and divine law from which there is no escape.”

Hezbollah’s cult of death, nurtured during its suicide-bomber phase, is stronger than ever. Wherever Hezbollah has a serious presence in Lebanon, portraits of young “martyrs” hang from electrical pylons. The eliminationist rhetoric and dreams of total destruction are taken to heart by those willing to die to kill Israelis and Jews. “You cannot understand the joy of jihad unless you are in Hezbollah,” one of its fighters tells Blanford. Nasrallah himself refused to accept condolences when his own son was “martyred.”

Blanford refrains from condemning Hezbollah outright—partly, no doubt, because he wants to retain his nearly unparalleled access to its spokesmen, but also because it isn’t necessary. Readers seeking denunciations of terrorism and “resistance” will have to look elsewhere. The Party of God’s own actions and words suffice well enough to condemn it. If calls to destroy a sovereign U.N. member state don’t bother you, there isn’t much Blanford or anyone else can say that will change your mind.

While Blanford’s focus is Hezbollah, the portrait he paints of the Israeli occupation isn’t flattering, either. Israelis of nearly all political persuasions view Lebanon as their Vietnam, so to speak, since one disaster and botched operation after another led to an all-but inevitable defeat and withdrawal. Blanford, though, does a better job here than most of his Beirut-based colleagues. He’s seemingly aware, without actually saying so, that Israel is the subject of hysterical lies every day in the Arab world, and he almost always takes great care before accusing Israel of any wrongdoing.

Hezbollah’s war against Israel is now in its 31st year. None of the outstanding issues that led to conflict in the past (Israel’s existence being the primary one) have been resolved. And the “resistance” is stronger than ever. The rocket war in 2006 killed more than 100 Israelis, more than 1,000 Lebanese, five U.N. peacekeepers, and even a handful of Iranian Revolutionary Guards. It caused billions in damage and produced hundreds of thousands of refugees in each country. It convinced both sides that the next round will be the deadliest ever and to prepare accordingly. Israel won’t make the same mistakes, and it can’t afford to; next time, not only Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, but also Israel’s Dimona nuclear power plant, will be within Hezbollah’s missile range.

Hezbollah fighters hope the next war will be fought more in Israel than in Lebanon. “The resistance leadership might ask you to lead the resistance to liberate Galilee [in Northern Israel],” Nasrallah said to his cadres early last year. “God willing, we will go into Palestine next,” one fighter told Blanford. “Next time maybe the U.N. will ask us to withdraw from Northern Israel,” another said, “rather than Israel withdraw from South Lebanon.”

Ten years ago, Blanford wrote in Beirut’s Daily Star that Hezbollah may be planning to storm Israeli border towns and seize hostages. “The revelation raised some eyebrows at the time,” he wrote, “but not anymore.” Hezbollah fighters aren’t (yet) sufficiently skilled or well-equipped to invade Israel and survive long enough to be asked to withdraw—but at the end of the day, they don’t have to. They have enough powerful missiles to inflict considerable pain without going anywhere. All they need to do is hide the launchers from Israeli aircraft—which they proved they can do during the last war—and use their guerrilla tactics to prevent Israeli soldiers from coming in and sabotaging the launch sites by hand.

Even with its bristling arsenal, Hezbollah still isn’t strong enough to destroy Israel. It probably never will be. But if its model of “resistance” is exported to enough of Israel’s neighbors—even if Iran fails to acquire nuclear weapons—the Jewish state may finally face the existential threat it has long feared. It may not be a likely scenario, but it has become an imaginable one.

It was good reading, Israel lobby kept US from interfering in Syria because they want this regime to survive and they want HA to exist in Lebanon as well Hamas too, this way they keep the people busy trying to make living and keep the area in turmoil.
Egypt still under the power of the Military and nothing changed, they protect Israel borders and keep the Palestinian in refugee camps
Hurray Hurray , wake up everyone and resist these regimes and topple the dictators.

“God willing, we will go into Palestine next,”  …. a line guaranteed to bring at least Jordan onto Israel’s side.
And HERE is one history book that should be on the student’s shelves. Will they be allowed to read it?
The propaganda that allows people to think blowing themselves up will be a ‘Godly Event’ is basically why there is fear of Iran getting ‘the big one’ and then giving a few to Hezzys to do the dirty work. After all, blowing up a whole region would be Nirvana attained. And we are sure that a God can have 72 x X-million virgins on hand, right? Although it might disturb a few billion others on the planet, we don’t care, because they are only infidels.
And we wonder why Lebanese leave Lebanon …..

  5. The writer doesn’t know basic facts.  Hundreds of thousands of Jews fought as US, UK, USSR or French soldiers or as partisans against the Nazis – not Arabs. Later, in 1948 the Israelis fought against British commanded Jordanian army and shot down British pilots. Between 1967-1973 Israeli pilots shot down Soviet pilots and destroyed Soviet manned SAM batteries. The Egyptians had the best Soviet equipment and training – yet they were defeated in 1973 and Israeli forces occupied part of the west bank of Suez canal. The 2006 Lebanon war basically a war between Iran and Israel on the soil of Lebanon. The casualties of Hizbullah were much higher than Israel’s, and the destruction in S. Lebanon Shiite areas was large – whereas the damages ti Israeli economy were negligable.  You have to understand- the people of Israel have no choice but to survive- after they were persecuted and murdered in Europe, and also in Iraq, Syria and Egypt (since the 1940th).

The first Naqba of Arab speaking people was not Palestinian – It was Jewish. Hundreds of thousands of Arabic speaking Jews who never did anything wrong to their Arab neighbours had to run away for their life in the 1940th, BEFORE the 1948 war.

Shut up for a sec. Remember Deir Yassin. Then talk about the “Jewish Naqba.” Even when the Israelis kill they want to be seen as a victim. Take responsibilities for negative actions for once. Right the wrongs and bring peace.

War begets war Azam, and ALL are victims of wars … but you can’t talk about ‘peace’ by beginning your speech with ‘shut up’ and expect a reasonable dialogue to proceed, since you set it up with a forceful command to start with.
Omeriko (the beautiful?) is correct in saying that people of all religions were represented in Allied armies to fight against one of the world’s worst megalomaniac ‘purists’ of a millennia … but then goes on to the bragging stage neatly forgetting the help Israelis have had in surviving.
Throwing partial-histories at each other all the time doesn’t lead to better futures between two people who are probably quite amenable discussing things that really matter to a future.
Useful dialogue, for instance, might include how to reduce pollution, both physical and mental.

      2. Azam- I’m sorry for Deir Yasin. And actually I’m a left winger and a supporter of a Palestinian state since I was 14. However what I said earlier were facts. Until the 1920th the Jews & muslims lived relatively peaceful with each other. But already in 1921, in 1929 and in 1936-1939- The Palestniaians in Palestine started to slaughter jews in Hebron and elswhere (Jews that were born in Palestine from ancient communities). Haj Amin al Husseini , the Mufti of Jerusalem, went to meet Hitler and incouraged the muslims in Bosnia & Kosovo to kill jews in Europe!!! Tens of thousands of Jews in Bosnia were killed by Nais including those incited by Al Husseini.

Moreover, the Nazi Germans managed to incite people in Iraq, Egypt and Syria to start and kill the Jews that lived there since 2589 BC. Hundreds of Jews were killed or wounded in Iraq BEFORE 1948 (the “Farhud”) and it forced the Jews to run for their life.

In modern Israel- Palestinian terrorists slaughtered thoysands of Israelis in buses, restaurants, uiversities, Purim holiday events, Passover holiday events, in lynching in the streets etc. I suggest you google: Park Hotel, Sbaro, Matza restaurant, Moment restaurant, Hebrew University,5, 18, 20, 26 bus lines etc, etc. etc.

I do support the right of the Palestinians to have an independent state and wish them only good. But if you are talking about Naqba or Deir Yasin- please remember the Jewish victims as well.

Actually, Arab attacks on Jews in Palestine began as early as 1917 when the fall of the Ottoman Empire gave rise to Arab Nationalism, with the Muslim Brotherhood and the likes of Al-Husseini (and eventually Yassir Arafat) – all from Egypt. In 1920, the culmination of Arab nationalism and focused racism resulted in the massacres of Jews which you have cited.

Deir yassin was a complete hoax, perpetrated by the Arab Higher Committee, specifically Husseini Khalidi, to invoke an emotional outcry from Arab capitals to draw in more Arab armies to kill Jews. It was a huge failure as it was the main cause for Arab local to run like hell without ever seeing an Israeli soldier. The testimonies of this fact by Deir Yassin residents is stored at Bir Zeit University in Ramallah and prove that the Israeli army did no such massacre. It was later admitted on the BBC in 1998 by Hazem Nusseibeh, who assisted in the lie through the Palestine Broadcasting Service in 1948.

Now if I can find these basic facts so easily with a Google search, surely you can as well before spouting such baseless nonsense.

Throwing partial-histories at each other all the time doesn’t lead to better futures between two people who are probably quite amenable discussing things that really matter.

The writer is spinning fact quite a bit. While they exault the “successes” of Hizbullah they ignore the political atmosphere inside Israel. The Israeli army in Lebanon was not exhausted and did not leave because of Hizbullah attacks. The PM at the time was Ehud Barak, who held a very leftist position, and on the backdrop of almost imminent peace with the “Palestinians” and on-going positive talks with Syria, withdrawing from Lebanon seemed like the best thing to do to push the region into peace and give Israel a better platform for a regional peace treaty.

Leaving Lebanon had little to do with Hizbullah except that, it was argued, it was claimed to be “removing a thorny issue from Hizbullah’s argument” thus pacifying the terrorist group. We see now, like the withdraw from Gaza in 2005 for the same reason, it was a big mistake.

Shortly afterwards, Hizbullah claimed that they fight because Israel still “occupies” Shaaba Farms, which was taken from Syria in 1967 (not Lebanon), and Nasrallah claimed that’s all his group wanted. An Israeli Leftists politician called for Israel to accept the offer. Immediately thereafter, Nasrallah proclaimed 7 supposed Shia villages in Northern Israel to be Lebanese as well, demanding their return. After which, Israeli politicians realized the fantasy of the Leftist positions for peace with the region.

However, we do see on the Intl scene that because Israel moved beyond the Blue Line, it maintains a better position during response attacks on Lebanese terrorists in the halls of the UN. Remember when LAF fired on the IDF and was subsequently reprimanded by the UN for breaching the border?

The author is definitely optimistic of the Arab goal of destroying the Jewish State, a sovereign UN member. He is right in stating that Hizbullah has re-armed to put much of Israel in its range, but misses a few facts. The IDF has identified MANY Hizbullah arsenals all over S. Lebanon and without a doubt, every single one will be hit within the first hour. Second, most of the rockets launched from hidden areas were short-range rockets, placing in orchards and other places that provide cover from IAF planes. The longer range rockets are not out in the open – they are stored away and require movement to an area in order to be fired.

Since 2006, the IAF has gained considerably in how to deal with guerrilla tactics and the use of UAVs, both in technology and technique. Anti-aircraft batteries of the LAF will be nailed very quickly, since they don’t yet have an advanced Russian system yet.

Now, enters Iron Dome which showed a nice (but not perfect) game-changing technology in favor of Israel, recently proved near Gaza.

Will Israel suffer loses in the next war with Hizbullah? Of course – against a group that will target everything and everybody, even Israeli Arabs, not many people can win. However, the estimation of Israeli loses will exceed reality and that of Lebanon will far exceed expectations. This is why whenever a rocket targets Israel from Lebanon, Hizbullah rushes to deny it had anything to do with it – even though we know they do and are just testing Israel’s response.

Finally, the only reason Hizbullah, a proxy terrorist arm of Iran, exists in Lebanon is because of the sectarian tension there and the lack of a real strong govt. It’s not a situation repeated in Jordan or Egypt, so the chance of a “Hizbullah” taking over the countries there to attack Israel is a pipe dream at best. We’re still waiting to see what happens in Syria which may result in a bad outcome as much for Lebanon as it does for Israel.

I agree. Our confidence is misplaced. However, it is nothing short of a miracle that in 48, we survived after given the lowlands, having our weapons collected by the British, having an international arms embargo, having all British positions given to Husseini and being invaded by five armies including one commanded by the British themselves.
