Qatar PM calls for arming Syrian rebels

The international community should provide arms to Syria’s opposition and Arab countries should take the lead in providing a safe haven for rebels inside Syria, Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim al-Thani said on Monday.

“I think we should do whatever is necessary to help them, including giving them weapons to defend themselves,” the prime minister said during a visit to Norway.

While the West has dismissed talk of a Libya-style NATO role to support the opponents of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Gulf Arab states have pushed for a more forceful stance. Saudi Arabia said on Friday it would back the idea of arming rebels.

The Qatari prime minister said that Arab countries should take part in an international military effort to stop the bloodshed in Syria after 11 months of insurrection against Assad in which thousands have been killed.

“Since we failed in the Security Council to do something, I think we have to try to do something to send enough military help to stop the killing,” he said.

  1. If youre going to give them weapons make sure you give it to one group or a group of defectors like an entire regiment or battalion that defects and fights together. The situation is very fragile to say the least. You can not send weapons into Syria hoping to remove Bashar and unite the opposition after the fighting ends. We cant have another Libya where militias are refusing to surrender the weapons they have and clash over territory daily. Im against Arming them to the point where they become a threat. If Turkey sends 40,000 soldiers across the border and setup a buffer zone about 30km deep and Jordan do the same Im sure more generals would defect with disciplined soldiers not militias. If we start sending weapons into the county we may get chaos for a long long time. The problem is the FSA is not organized and will not be without a buffer zone. Putting an army together needs organization and space to assemble and operate. Just sending weapons in will create a insurgency controlled by militias linked to political parties with political goals. I just hope they do this responsibly but I dont think they will.

I would agree with you but its not going to happen because its the safest and fastest way to end the war and the powers that be want to sell weapons and make money for a long time. I read your comments. I was also In the Army a long time back (CA National Guard) and went to rotc at ucla. Youre thinking like a military man with a good military plan IF YOU WANTED TO ACTUALLY DO GOOD AND HELP PEOPLE. The powers in the world dont. They want to kill and sell weapons because Syria is not a oil state.

      1.  I was in the Army reserves. I didnt go to rotc I received a direct commission after college and went to OCS then language school in N.California. Im also from California (Manhattan Beach)
