Free Syrian Army foils attempt to evacuate Assad’s family

The Free Syrian Army foiled an attempt to evacuate the wife of Syrian president Bashar al Assad, his mother and his kids from Damascus International Airport , Al Masry al Yaoumi reported on Sunday.

Meanwhile , the Syrian opposition has reported that battles between the Syrian army and the Free Syrian Army are still raging near the Damascus airport

The violence in Syria continues to escalate as 66 were reportedly killed today according to activists

Informed sources said in Syria, on Sunday evening, the Syrian Free Army forces foiled an attempt to smuggle Asma al-Assad, the wife of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, and their sons, and his mother, Anisa Makhlouf, and his cousin Rami Makhlouf, and his sons, out of Syria via Damascus airport.

    The sources told Al Masry Al Youm Newspaper (Egyptian Today): The convoy of official vehicles were seen heading to the airport in Damascus, before they intercepted a brigades of defectors from the regular army, bound for the Syrian army free, and there was a heavy exchange of fire, and the bombing of a helicopter, before the security of the President in charge of the smuggling and the procession returned to the presidential palace.

    The source explained that fierce fighting that broke out, Sunday morning, between the forces of the Syrian army free dissidents, and regular troops, in the vicinity of the airport, took place during a chase by intelligence forces of a Syrian brigade dissident, a Chairman of the Palestine Branch of Syrian intelligence, who defected earlier Sunday.

    The sources said that Major General Khallouf was traveling from city to city in Damascus, to escape from the government forces that were pursuing him, until he was in Ghouta area near the Damascus airport .The source added that the brigade of Khallouf, and a military group, consisting of 300 troops, which split with him, were surprised by the military convoy.There was shooting between the existing security forces to guard the procession, and the forces of Khallouf, before the helicopters arrived to intervene with air cover to protect the convoy, which led to the intensification of the bombing, in the vicinity of the airport.

    Said Abdul-Halim Khaddam, a former Syrian vice president, and a resident for years in Paris: “The information received from Syria, that the bombing operations around the airport led to the shutdown air traffic.”The Syrian intelligence had cut the road from Damascus to the airport earlier.
