Israeli DM: Assad has only ‘a few weeks’ left in control in Syria

Share:

The family of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has only “a few weeks” left in control of the strife-torn country, Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak told MPs on Monday.

“The Assad family has no more than a few weeks to remain in control in Syria,” Barak told the parliament’s prestigious foreign affairs and defence committee in remarks quoted by the committee spokesman.

“There is no possibility in the current situation of evaluating what will happen the day after Bashar’s fall,” he said.

Syria has been pressing a bloody and brutal crackdown against pro-democracy activists which the United Nations says killed more than 5,000 people in 2011.

Barak also warned that the fall of the Assad family could have implications for the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

“In the north, there may be possible implications from Syria on the Golan Heights and a broader area as the result of the loss of control,” he said on Monday in a separate statement released by his office.

According to Barak, the Assad regime was deteriorating as a result of the combination of internal and external pressures.

“Even if it is hard to clearly see the exact date when the regime will fall, the trend is clear, and with every day that passes, the regime is getting closer to the end of its rule, and its grip is loosening,” he said.

But the defence minister did not foresee significant international intervention in Syria for the time being, since the world “understands that there is no alternative to the current regime yet.”

The collapse of Assad’s regime would constitute a “severe blow to the radical axis,” he said, putting an emphasis on the impact it would have on Tehran.

A UN estimate in early December put the death toll in Syria since the start of the crackdown in mid-March, at more than 5,000.

An estimate by the Local Coordination Committees network of activists put the number at 5,862 including 395 children and 146 women.

President Bashar Assad is digging in for a full-scale civil war:  a fortress is under construction for the Syrian ruler, family, his loyal generals and ruling elite in the northwestern Alawite (Al-Ansariyyah) Mountains – should Damascus become too hot for them. From there, the Assads will continue to fight for their survival. These mountains have the only dense forests in the vicinity of Syria’s Mediterranean coast. The Al-Ansariyyah range averages 32 kilometers (20 miles) in breadth and a peak elevation of just over 1,200 meters. The tallest mountain, Nabi Yunis east of Latakia, is 1,562 meters (5,125 feet) high. The range slopes down from its northern tip to an average altitude of 900 meters (3,000 feet) and 600 meters in the south. Military and intelligence sources report Syrian engineering corps crews working at speed to build a fortified encampment, partly inside caves and tunnels, on the wooded slopes. Its perimeter is enclosed with anti-tank defenses armed with anti-air batteries. When finished, the camp will be one of the most heavily fortified strongholds in the Middle East. In support of the Syrian dictator, large groups of Alawite families began moving in the last week of November from the mixed towns of Latakia, Hama and Homs to new homes in the encampment – apparently on a signal from Assad’s intelligence and security services. Fortified facilities stocked with supplies are being provided for Alawite families unable to leave their towns and villages. This mass relocation encompasses around a million Alawites, or a third of the 3.5 million members of this deviant offspring of this ruling Shiite Muslim faith, which numbers just over one-tenth of Syria’s total population.
By reestablishing his headquarters in a mountain fortress, Bashar Assad hopes to achieve two goals:1. To keep his Alawite following out of harm’s way in a full-scale civil war. They face bitter Sunni revenge for the brutal persecution its adherents have suffered from Assad father and son for 37 years.2. Clustering Alawite families in protected cantons will guarantee their loyalty to Bashar Assad and his clan.
Not all Alawite clan leaders are willing to following the ruler into his mountain bastion. Some communities have gone over to the other side, for the first time in the ten-month popular uprising against his regime.
In the flashpoint Homs and Hama regions, a dozen Alawite village chiefs have struck deals with local rebel militia chiefs including the Free Syrian Army for guaranteed immunity from attack provided their sons refuse to join Assad’s state-backed private paramilitary Shabiha.
The inability of Assad and his henchmen to prevent these desertions from his own clan betokens the president’s declining authority beneath the bloody surface of the contest in the strife-torn country.

no provisions for the christians supporting him who will for sure suffer at the hands of the rebels if not for being christian alone, for supporting this khara assad. when will these syrian christians wake the hell up? they are committing suicide by supporting assad, they need to distance themselves from his falling regime, time is running out for them.

If youve been on this site for a long time youd know antar is a man who hates Syria and Israel both alike for they both caused catastrophe in Lebanon. Antar is a great person too, and not some angry frenzied person like you. Antar is against Iran and Hezbollah, maybe if you can see a person previous comments instead of judging him like this. This is the problem with most you Lebanese exports living in different countries. You think everything is going to happen like you say it is, you think the dictatorships of Iran and Syria are going to disappear in a finger snap. Even though Syria is going on the way of a civil war, its still the government who hold almost all the weapons. You guys have to wake up from your fantasy and look at reality honestly. Were going to be entering 2013 and your going to be saying the same thing. Just because antar spoke out against the Israeli government doesnt mean hes a “Iranian spy working for Hezbollah which was born in a family of Amal fighters and a nasty filthy Assad supporter who is working to kill the Lebanese people”. I dont understand why you took Antars remark about Israel so serious, because he commented against the Syrian government too. Maybe you were living in your fantasy before the 1980s also, but Israel did harm our country too, obviously not at the scale of Syria but they still did. At this rate, is it right for me to accuse you of being an “Israeli officer”? An SLA soldier living in Israel? You sound like an idiot, you foreign Lebanese political lovers tend to make Lebanon sound worse than it is. We live our life fine here and its not as bad as you make it say it is, as of right now we coexist pretty peacefully, and most Lebanese hope one day Hezbollah will give its weapons, but its not going to happen in the blink of an eye Mr. C S.

Also, you know nothing about me, so maybe you should first shut YOUR big mouth. People who know me, know I am a logical, calm thinking and educated person, so don’t even go there. Also, just because I don’t live in Lebanon 24 x 7, I visit Lebanon 5 or more times a year, and have a pulse on what is going in on MY country, as well, so don’t go there, either. Let me tell you one thing: No country hurt my beloved Lebanon, more than “brotherly” Syria, not even Israel. The Syrians caused more damage to Lebanon then Israel ever did. The same for Iran, as they too caused more problems for Lebanon then the ya’hood. Don’t go there, either. Seems to me you and your friend Antar2011 are the ones who are “angry and frenzied”. I wish you all the best for 2012. Watch and see the Syrian people make peace with Israel, once Israel sees an established and democratic government evolve in Syria, afterwhich they will much more comfortable in returning the Ju’lan to Syria. Lebanon will be at peace with Israel, so will Syria, then there is Jordan, and hopefully Egypt will stay on board. What will Antar2011 and you have to say, then, you clown?

3 of my cousins died in the “100 Days War” against Syria in 1978. My Uncle died in Zahle fighting in 1981. You should shut your mouth if you dont know someones history. 1 of my friends from highschool were killed by the Israel bombardment of West Beirut. No one hurt our country more than the Palestinians who killed even more than the Syrians. Your the animal which is assuming, just because Antar spoke out against Israel doesnt mean he supports Hezbollah. You seem to be very angry, as i see through out your comments. Syria and Israel are two dogs working together, tell me why Syria hasnt fired a bullet on the Golan since 1967. Your political dreams are hilarious, you have hope, not goals. PS: i lived my whole teenage life in terror because of Syrian shelling. After the 80s when i went back to my parents old home in the Chouf, your love Israel decided to abandon their posts which left the Christian citizens and LF to be slaughtered by Syrians etc, i was lucky to escape. My life was both in a shit hole because of Syria, Israel, PLO. Dont be mad at me, im just saying use your brain, Antar is a Sunni, why would he support Iran? Shame on you, go pray to Virgin Mary you will need help for your overly violent mind. How dare you call Antar “ibn ya kelb” without ever knowing the man. Peace with Israel? Are you dreaming you idiot, maybe your 5 years old, so ask your father that  the great Bachir Gemayel told Israel he wont be making peace with them due to the fact that in reality Israel would be making peace with the right wing Christians. Did you ever open a book? And read about the May 17 agreement maybe youd learn that the Israelis backstabbed their Christian allies in the Chouf due to the fact we didnt want to make peace with them. If Israels allies, “Lebanese Forces” “Phalange” refused to make peace with Israel, do you think that the Sunnis and Shi’ites whose lives were savaged by the Israelis are willing to make peace? Buddy i dont know were your brain is, and i dont want to know were it is. But all i got to say is your not impressing anyone by savaging everyone on this site that disagrees with your ideologies.

      1. wow, where do we begin about the losses and the blood that was spilled in the late 70’s and the 80’s…its a nasty cycle that is for sure…I would like to say though, I can relate with CS’ frustration although I think he may have misunderstood antar (who I assumed was Druze not Sunni…negligible I suppose)…Its a shame Lebanon’s system is failing, and not because the system is wrong but rather because of the corruption of the foreign agents who have infiltrated our govt and politics…the unbalance created by the illegal arms, the bullying, the lies I can go on and on about why the Lebanese system is failing…without the Syrian and Iranian agents in Govt and the arms on the streets the system would be political and dialogue would be kiing, also the peoples choices would hold strong…I dont think we can afford another year of armed terrorist organizations holding the country hostage, it seems force will be the only way to defeat this evil that has grown in Lebanon..the force of good always prevails and  this is certain…

        1. Fadi81 is right. I did misunderstand Antar and apologize to him. I hate the Syrians, the Iranians, and the Palestineans for what they did to Lebanon. I am not happy with the ya’hood either so let’s get that straight as well. All I want is a free, democratic Lebanon, where Christians, Muslims, Druze and whomever else, lives in peace, and the hell with everyone else. I too lost family and had family wounded, during the war years, so none of us are alone here, when it comes to that.

however, that does not mean in order to defeat iblis, we should throw ourselves in Hell too…..no, the only way to defeat the zionists is to defeat the evil within ourselves.

C S, my brother in humanity, simply put, we need to be an independent strong united coutry FIRST before we think to defeat the criminal state south of lebanon.

but we are not putting our hands with the zionist who commited all those crimes to our fellow brothers, lebanese citizens, who destroyed our country [with syrian Assad, both are partners in destruction of lebanon] raped our women, made our children orphans and made our future looking bleak, and pretend that nothing ever happened…i am sorry but it is not on….

and no i am not a Hizballah worshiping iben kalb… i won’t go to that level of words even but i will be patient with you because after all you are a weak human being who got frustrated quickly and rushed into assumptios.

even if i a sunni from tripoli i would like to be labled simply…. a lebanese.

  11. Beiruti: Are you Antar2011’s mommy, or can he speak for himself?

Watch and see the Syrian people make peace with Israel, once Israel sees an established and democratic government evolve in Syria.

But all i got to say is your not impressing anyone by savaging everyone on this site that disagrees with your ideologies.

wow, where do we begin about the losses and the blood that was spilled in the late 70’s and the 80’s…its a nasty cycle that is for sure…I would like to say though, I can relate with CS’ frustration although I think he may have misunderstood antar (who I assumed was Druze not Sunni…negligible I suppose)…Its a shame Lebanon’s system is failing, and not because the system is wrong but rather because of the corruption of the foreign agents who have infiltrated our govt and politics…the unbalance created by the illegal arms, the bullying, the lies I can go on and on about why the Lebanese system is failing…without the Syrian and Iranian agents in Govt and the arms on the streets the system would be political and dialogue would be kiing, also the peoples choices would hold strong…I dont think we can afford another year of armed terrorist organizations holding the country hostage, it seems force will be the only way to defeat this evil that has grown in Lebanon..the force of good always prevails and  this is certain…

      2. Read my reply to Fadi81, below this comment, and be quiet, my friend. I know MUCH more than you think I do…you would be shocked, as what I know, but cannot state here. Shocked…
