Sarkozy considers Israeli PM a liar, report

French President Nicolas Sarkozy told U.S. President Barack Obama last week he was fed up with dealing with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and considered him a liar.

Sarkozy made the comment during a private conversation with Obama during a G20 summit in the French riviera town of Cannes last week and the remarks were overheard by a small number of journalists but not initially reported.

“I cannot bear Netanyahu, he’s a liar,” Sarkozy told Obama during a frank exchange where the U.S. president took him to task for backing a Palestinian request for membership of the U.N. cultural heritage agency UNESCO.

A Reuters reporter was among the journalists present and can confirm the veracity of the comments, which were relayed by a French internet outlet on Tuesday.

Obama said he had to deal regularly with Netanyahu even if Sarkozy was fed up with the Israeli leader, according to the translation of a French interpreter during their Cannes exchange.

In their quest for statehood recognition, the Palestinians have requested membership of the over-arching United Nations system, in addition to its Paris-based UNESCO subsidiary.

France voted in favor of a UNESCO request that succeeded but said last week it would abstain in any vote on membership of the over-arching U.N. system, which Washington has vowed to veto. Paris and Washington are urging renewed peace talks between the Palestinians and Israelis.

    The French have always had a ‘problem’ with Jews … admit it … possibly from long before Hitler. Ask the Vichy … and Popes of history … how the politics of religions actually work.

      I think the French have a problem with just about everyone who isn’t French, just look at what Sarkozy said to David Cameron a few weeks ago. In any case, Sakozy himself has Jewish ancestry. I don’t think that his remarks on Netanyahu are anti Jewish in any way. He’s just being a bit blunt but somewhat truthfull. Netanyahu makes all sort of promises to the international community regarding settlements and goes and does the exact opposite. That’s lying in my book. And I’m not anti Jewish, I just don’t like Netanyahu.

    I think it’s a “polititian thing”. They all lie. But some more than others. And usually it’s the public they lie to.

    In this case, Mr Netanyahu is being called a liar by a supposed ally. I guess even in politics, it’s impossible to work with a lying partner.

      That’s the idea behind negotiating ‘for the good of all’ … even if you have to negotiate with a mule.
      As has been noted often, when the only tool you have is a hammer, every problem tends to be seen as a nail, and hammering all the time is not very peaceful or productive for a whole neighbourhood.

    Clinton’s secretary of state, Madeline Albright got so fed up with  Netanyahu’s lies during a peace negotiation session at Camp David ; She told him to pack and leave immediately.
    His infamous credibility is quit known to most world leaders and officials who have dealt with this man.

    As to  why Israelis keep voting for him,It is obvious that they count on his ability to lie to the international community so that He buys them more time to build more settlements, and avoid giving the Palestinians the west bank and accepting a viable independent state.
