The United States has urged US citizens to leave Syria immediately, saying the government’s violent crackdown on peaceful protests had led to an uncertain and volatile situation.
“The US department of state urges US citizens in Syria to depart immediately while commercial transportation is available,” the department said in a warning notice, adding that future plans by US citizens to travel to Syria should be deferred.
“Given the ongoing uncertainty and volatility of the current situation, US citizens who must remain in Syria are advised to limit nonessential travel within the country,” it said.
It also said “Syrian efforts to attribute the current civil unrest to external influences have led to an increase in anti-foreigner sentiment.”
The state department had ordered eligible family members of US government employees and certain non-emergency embassy personnel to leave Syria in April.
