Patriarch Rai: Lebanese state is the only guarantee

Bechara Boutros al-Rai , the newly elected Maronite Patriarch said on Saturday that he does not support “statelets,” adding that “the Lebanese state is the only guarantee.”

This was a possible reference to Hezbollah which is considered a state within a state

“We have to overcome all past conflicts and preserve state institutions that should remain strong,” Rai was quoted by National News Agency as saying.

He also said that “only the state is the symbol of our unity,” adding that the judiciary “should not be politicized.”

Last Tuesday Rai was quoted as saying: “Lebanon is sick and needs treatment,” stressing that the government crisis has crippled the Lebanese constitutional institutions and led to economic problems. o the delay of government formation

The Iranian and Syrian backed Hezbollah brought down PM Saad Hariri’s government on January 12 over Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) ’s imminent indictment which is widely expected to implicate Hezbollah members in the assassination of the father of caretaker PM

Lebanon has been run by a caretaker government since last January. Nagib Mikati was appointed in January as the PM designate with the backing of the new March 8 majority led by Hezbollah. March 14 leaders have repeatedly said that intimidation from Hezbollah’s weapons helped secure the parliamentary majority for Mikati’s nomination.

Disputes over cabinet formation have prevented Mikati from forming the cabinet. Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun is reportedly demanding a disproportionate share in the cabinet and is being backed by Hezbollah and Syria in his demands . Aoun is also reportedly insisting on being allocated the 2 most sensitive security portfolios : The ministries of Interior and communications and does not want the president to have any share in the cabinet .

  1. Hezbollah must be destroyed for Lebanon to be finally free, from every fighter and every weapon down to the lil fat pasty white guy cowering in the sewer system.. It will help when the murdering dentist next door is dragged to the courts, the gallows or both.Assad’s fall will weaken the Iranian menace that is the true cause of all your ill’s.

Iran Aware, or Iran Obsessed as I should probably call you. While Iran is a huge problem in Lebanon. It is not the only problem. Once people begin to realize that the problem is not from ONE side but from BOTH, then you will truly understand the nature of our country. I wish it was just one “wrong”; it’d be easier to solve the problem wouldn’t it? I think if Lebanon’s problem was so one-sided, our problems wouldn’t have lasted since the early 70s.

So unfortunately, even if Hezbollah are gone, Lebanon will still be in shackles. What’s the difference when you’re in a room locked with 5 different keys and you fine one? 😛

One could be obsessed for sure, when Iran is teaching Syria how to secretly arrest, jail, beat, maim & disfigure for life, and kill it’s own people because they wanted a little freedom from the ‘daily fear’ under more-than-economic repression and set up a ‘people’s protest’ to show that. ‘Iran Aware’ does not have the obsession that the ‘Supreme Being’ of Iran wishes for himself. Good thing.

It’s important to criticize Syria and Iran for their actions.  These rulers need to go away, and the Syrian people are heros for stepping up and risking their lives for the future generations. I’ve said before that I’m a coward compared to them for not being able to do the same thing, for fearing for my life.

On the other hand, it’s a shame that you happened to not read my entire response, because I didn’t deny Iran and Syria’s problems, but I also said that the other side isn’t one that represents doves or freedom.  When the US and Israel have Saudi Arabia as allies, one of the most brutal regimes in the world, it must give you some perspective right?

Don’t get me wrong, I have no support for Syria or Iran. But at the same time, I won’t immediately jump to the opposite pole without knowledge, and clearly both poles are just as guilty..which is why I stand in the middle.

      Iran Aware,
As long  as people like  you think that the  solution  to Lebanon’s  problems  is the elimination of others, there will never  be any  solution  , nor  any  stability.Remember that  throughout  the modern  history  of Lebanon, civil and domestic  problems  existed, way  before  the  creation of HA  or the  current  Iranian  regime. Was Lebanon  free before the  creation of HA? I’m not  sure  if it  is your obsession  or  denial  , but the  result  is the same; ignorance and hatred.
Lebanon  can  only  be  free when all parties  agree that  a total  political  reform is needed. A reform that would  do away  with  sectarianism ,and replace it with a modern democratic  system where everyone shares same  responsibilities and duties; a system  where  no one  is above the  law.a system  where  a everyone feels  safe under  one  national  identity.
