Libya … Syria: What is the difference?

Share:

Both, the Syrian and the Libyan regime, have faced uprisings from their people – both of which have been put down violently in heavy-handed crackdowns.

And yet the international community has intervened militarily in Libya, but not in Syria. While NATO pounds targets in Libya, Syria is hit only with sanctions.

In the Syrian case, the UN, US, the western countries and even Turkey have been far more muted, asking only for Bashar al-Assad, the Syrian president, not to use excessive force on demonstrators.

Why? What is the difference between government crackdowns which both target their own people?

    the difference is oil.
    the difference is strategic alliances.
the difference is one is israeli neighbour who have kept its front with the zionist calm while the other has nothing to do with israel.

all that is taken into account by Obama admin….unfortunately human rights, the same one they defend, is only upheld when own interest is at stake…hypocrites!

as for Turkey, it does not need a stronger kurdish presence nor does it need more refugees from syria. more importantly though, it still needs to keep relations open with iran.

syria had been russia’s ally for many many years, it’s natural to be cautious in the eyes od russian authorities…besides, they do not want a stronger european and american influence in the region.

china…welll china is a suprise….i cannot understand their position in regards to syria.
