The Arab League representative to the United Nations, Yahya Mahmassani, said here Thursday that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Qatar have indicated their willingness to take part in the efforts to impose a no-fly zone over Libya if authorized by the UN Security Council.

“There are countries who have already committed themselves to participate (in the no-fly zone), but we don’t have confirmed names yet,” Mahmassani said. Asked again whether the UAE and Qatar would participate, he said “maybe.”

The Arab League envoy made the statement to reporters here as the Security Council is meeting behind closed doors to discuss the issue of a no-fly zone over Libya. The 15 Council members are meeting to consider a draft resolution, presented by Lebanon, Britain and France, which called for the authorization of the no- fly zone over Libya to end violence and protect civilians in the North African country.

The Arab League on Saturday decided to endorse the efforts to impose the no-fly zone over Libya. Xinhua
