Saudi envoy: Lebanese should have a plan to deal with STL indictments

Saudi Arabia’s ambassador to Lebanon Ali Awadh Assiri has reportedly stressed during a meeting with a Hezbollah delegation on Wednesday “the importance of permanent communication.

The delegation was dispatched to the Saudi Embassy in Beirut by Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah .

He also stressed “the importance of Arab sponsorship of all political affairs in Lebanon.”

The Saudi envoy highlighted “the strong relation between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Lebanon,” noting that there are “extensive contacts conducted by the Saudi leadership which is keen on communication with all parties in Lebanon.”

“The gates of the embassy are open to all Lebanese brothers, and the kingdom is always willing to do what serves the welfare of Lebanon and the Lebanese,” Assiri said.

“We hope the clouds that dominated the Lebanese atmospheres have been dispersed through the cooperation of the Lebanese and the understanding of all those who are sincere towards Lebanon, topped by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Syria,” he added.

The Saudi diplomat stressed that “the international tribunal is an internal Lebanese affair,” adding that “there’s a need that the Lebanese brothers, through dialogue and understanding, produce a Lebanese plan to deal with the repercussions of the indictment” of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) .

He said that such a plan would “preserve stability in Lebanon,” stressing that Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz al-Saud was “keen on the unity of the Lebanese in addition to their solidarity and cooperation.”

Assiri added that the Saudi king was “ready to exert every effort that safeguards the stability in Lebanon.”

Tension escalated in Lebanon after reports said that the STL will soon issue its indictment into the 2005 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri. last July, Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah said that the tribunal is “an Israeli project” that will indict Hezbollah members.
