Israel finds rare 2,200-year-old gold coin near Lebanon border

Archaeologists say they have uncovered the heaviest and most valuable gold coin ever found in Israel.

The 2,200-year-old coin weighs an ounce (28 grams) and was found at the Tel Kedesh site near the Lebanon border on June 22, according to Wednesday’s statement from the antiquities authority.

It said this coin is six times the weight of most others from that era.

Donald Ariel, head of the antiquities authority coin department, said the coin dates back to the rule of the Iraq-based Seleucid Empire, though it was minted by the rival Egyptian Ptolemies.

Ariel said the coin’s image may represent Cleopatra I, wife of Ptolemy V. It is only the second gold Ptolemaic coin ever found in Israel. The first weighed just two grams (0.07 ounces).

      Did you, prophet, also notice that is no Arabic script neither? That’s because the Seleucids were Greeks. When Alexander conquered the area in 300 BC the Jews were the third of the population. Alexander spared them as they promised him to name every first born Alexander and did not defying him like the Tyrians did.

      The Seleucids were a mixture of Greeks and locals. The Alphabet used and the language used were Greeks (borrowed letters from Phoenician scripts which incidentally did not have vowels). Two hundred years after this coin was minted, Jesus was born, as a Jew, to a Jewish family, in Palestine under Roman rule. The people of the land spoke Greek, Aramaic, Hebrew, and Latin.

      Rome split into two empires and Byzantium (The Eastern Roman Empire) made its capital Constantinople (Istanbul) and the people of the land spoke Aramaic, Hebrew, Roman and the Greek started retreating as the main language.

      It was not until early 900 that Arabs (and Islam) started their conquest out of the peninsula.

      That being clarified, the Levant (including Palestine) cannot be claimed by ANY group of people as “their own”.

      Palestine is the name of the land bordered by Lebanon North, the Sinai, South and the most recent invention, Jordan Eastwardly. The people of the land are an amalgam of Aramaic, Hebrews, Greeks and Arabs. The Egyptian Scripts speak of “the Sea People” as an invading force and some people believe they came from the Greek cities of Modern Turkey or probably Hittites because the city states apparently could not stand against their sophisticated weapons and they asked the Pharaohs help. The Philistines as they became known were not Arabs, and like their Phoenician brethren they lived side by side with other tribes and often fought over the land.

      In the First Century (100 years after the birth of Jesus), the Romans had it with the Jews and after the latter’s rebellion the Roman Emperor Hadrian wiped out the identity of Israel and imposed the name of Palastina to the area and the name was carried through Byzantine era and afterward the Arabs adopted the Greco-Roman name and called it “Falastin”. The British took Falastin from the Ottoman Turks and we all know what happened next…

      The biggest culprits in the current crisis are actually the Arabs. WHY?

      Six Arab states launched a war against the newly “invented” State of Israel. However, and sadly, their purpose was not to establish an independent Falastin. Their aim was to partition Palestine amongst themselves. By doing so THEY (the Arabs) undermined the future of an entire people and ruined it for generations to come.
