Hezbollah: Syria will never occupy Lebanon again

Hezbollah political bureau member Ghaleb Abu Zeinab said on Tuesday that it is impossible for Syria to return to Lebanon.

He also said normalization of Lebanese-Syrian relations is proceeding in “a positive way.”

Lebanon and Syria established diplomatic relations last year for the first time since the two countries gained independence from France in 1943.

“Syria, through the exchange of embassies, offered a sort of a final recognition of Lebanon as a country,” Abu Zeinab said. He added that if some Lebanese factions have fears about Syria’s ambitions in Lebanon, “these fears will be dispelled with time.”

Under local and international pressures, Syria was forced to withdraw its troops from Lebanon in 2005, ending nearly three decades of military presence in the country. The decision followed the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.
