Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblatt warned during an interview with An-Nahar newspaper against applying proportional representation system during June’s municipal elections, saying it could cause demographic destabilization.
“In the end, the spirit of the Taif Accord forbids any demographic destabilization in municipal councils,” he added.
Jumblatt also asked how a system of proportional representation could be effectively applied in smaller towns and villages, where, he added, family politics prevail.
Jumblat said the issue of Proportional Representation in elections may take a long period of time before being approved by the parliament .
Meanwhile, As-Safir reported that Jumblat has been informed that his visit to Syria will take place sometime in the second half of March.
