BEIRUT: President Michel Aoun maintained Thursday that he expects Syrian refugees to return home regardless of a resolution to the conflict, saying that Lebanon is “suffering the consequences of a war in which it has no say.”
Aoun’s remarks came at the launch of the Lebanese Diaspora Energy conference during which he reiterated that Lebanon is not equipped to handle the burden of this crisis.
“What worries us the most is the international community tying the return of displaces refugees to a political solution in Syria, this is not assuring at all,” he said.
Despite the international community renewing its pledges to Lebanon and other hosts countries at the Brussels II conference last month, Lebanon continues to reel under the burden of the sizeable refugee population.
