Iraqi authorities say suicide bombers have killed at least 15 military personnel, including several officers.
Officials say Major General Mohammed al-Karawi was among those killed Saturday in Rutba, near the Syrian border in western Iraq.
No one has claimed responsibility for the attack in the Sunni-dominated western Anbar province.
Unrest in Iraq has spiked since security forces stormed a Sunni protest camp north of Baghdad in April.
The violence this year has been the worst since 2008.
