rai aounFree Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun called for serious Christian-Christian and Christian-Lebanese consensus with regards to the choice of a strong president for the Lebanese Republic .

Aoun made the statement after talks on Monday night with Maronite Patriarch Beshara al-Rai on latest developments and especially the upcoming presidential elections.

“All Maronite leaders must converge around Bkriki to hold consultations and choose the most appropriate president for Lebanon.” He said adding:

“Serious efforts must be exerted to reach Christian-Christian and Christian-Lebanese consensus” .

Aoun warned against presidential vacuum, saying: “The greatest vacuum in Lebanon lies in extending the term of the president.”

Suleiman’s six-year term ends in May, but there are fears that the differences between the March 8 and 14 camps would lead to a vacuum in the country’s top post.

Aoun said last week that no president in lebanon has ever been elected by the Lebanese stressing that foreigners always decided who should be Lebanon’s president .

“Throughout history, no president has been elected by the Lebanese but rather through foreign will”, Aoun said during an interview with MTV on December 9.

Asked about his plans for the presidential election he said :

“We have not consulted with out allies and with Hezbollah over the issue of nominations for the presidency and it’s still early for me to discuss this issue and no one has told me that I’m a candidate.”

Aoun said if elected as next president he will allow Hezbollah to keep its resistance arms until a solution for the Middle East is reached.
