UNHCR: Number of Syrian Refugees in Lebanon is over 400,000

Syrian refugees lebanon 11-10-11The number of Syrian refugees, who fled the turmoil in their country to Lebanon, have soared to more than 400,000, said a weekly report released by the United Nations Higher Council for Refugees (UNHCR).

According to the report, the number of registered refugees hit 12,000 during the past week, with 262,000 refugees already registered and 140,000 in the process of being registered.

The report said that there are currently 113,000 Syrian refugees in Northern Lebanon, 99,000 in the Bekaa, 28,000 in Beirut and 20,000 in Southern Lebanon.

Lebanon called on Arab countries to provide 370 million U.S. dollars to help it in meeting the Syrian refugee flow to its territories.

The UN Higher Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres said that the number of refugees in Lebanon has surpassed 10 percent of its population and it is causing a huge burden on the government and people of Lebanon.
