Christian leaders decide to shelve the Orthodox law

bkirki meeting - christian panelMaronite Patriarch Cardinal Bechara Boutros Rai held a meeting in Bkerke with several Christian officials to discuss the electoral law for the upcoming elections .

Change and Reform Bloc Leader MP Michel Aoun, Marada Party Leader MP Suleiman Franjieh, Phalange Party MP Sami Gemayel ( representing former president Amin Gemayel) , Lebanese Forces MP Georges Adwan ( representing LF leader Samir Geagea) , MP Alain Aoun, Former Minister Youssef Saadeh and Bishops Samir Mazloum and Boulos Sayyah attended the meeting.

Following the meeting the officials announced that they decided to suspend all discussions pertaining to the Orthodox Gathering’s draft electoral law until to allow for a consensus to be reached on a new law.

The officials also agreed that they will not submit the list of their candidates for the parliamentary election on the basis of the 1960’s electoral law and called on Interior Minister Marwan Charbel to reject all applications that are based on it.

The Orthodox Gathering law is opposed by the Future Movement, the Progressive Socialist Party , President Michel Suleiman, caretaker PM Nagib Mikati and all the independent Christian MPs

Their statement comes a day after the Progressive Socialist Party submitted the applications for seven of its candidates seeking to run in the upcoming elections.

Jumblatt prefers the modified 1960 electoral law.
