MP Suleiman Frangieh told Iranian Ambassador to Lebanon Qazanfar Roknabadi who visited him on Saturday that the Syrian people are still siding with President Bashar al-Assad and support him and blasted the foreign states that are attempting to prevent Assad’s candidacy in the 2014 election.

“The Syrian people are beside Bashar al-Assad and still support him, as they have always done in the past.”

Roknabadi, for his part, stressed the need to adopting the necessary measures to prevent the spread of the Syrian crisis to Lebanon, and said the Syrian issue should be settled through political means.

He elaborated on Iranian foreign ministry’s six-point plan proposed on December 6 to settle the crisis in Syria

According to the foreign ministry, the first step in the plan is stopping violence and preventing military intervention of other countries in the Syrian issue.

The second step is preventing the shipment of weapons and holding national talks. Setting up a committee of the representatives of the Syrian people and government to reach an agreement on necessary reforms, taking steps to hold elections, reforming the Constitution as well as holding parliamentary and presidential elections are among the other moves demanded by the Iranian proposal.

On November 18, Iran hosted the Syrian National Dialogue Conference, with the motto “No to Violence, Yes to Democracy”, but the main Syrian opposition “the Syrian National Coalition ” refused to attend or send a representative , but a number of Syrian parliament members as well as some political figures from Sudan, Algeria, Turkey, Egypt, Lebanon, Iraq, Brazil and Zimbabwe took part in the meeting.

Franjieh , the grandson of former Lebanese president Suleiman Franjieh is a staunch ally of Syria and a regular visitor to Damascus.

His grandfather Franjieh invited the Syrian troops into Lebanon in May 1976 in the early stages of the Lebanese civil war.
