Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah traveled to Damascus last Thursday to attend a meeting on Israeli threats against Lebanon with Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Syrian president Bashar al Assad.
The meeting outraged the Lebanese majority alliance which it considered as blatant interference in the Lebanese internal affairs
In an interview with the Voice of Lebanon radio station on Saturday, Labor Minister Boutros Harb, a key member of the majority alliance said Lebanon cannot rest in the face of continuous Israeli threats. But, he said, no decisions from Iran and Syria should make their way to Lebanon without the Lebanese cabinet’s involvement.
“The Lebanese people should not be the victims of some political parties taking non-Lebanese positions,” he added. He was referring to Hezbollah
Elias Zoghbi a key member of March 14 majority alliance called for an emergency dialogue session to discuss the war escalation in the region and its effect on Lebanon.
In reference to the meeting held in Damascus between Hezbollah leader and the Iranian and Syrian presidents he said : ” The fate of Lebanon cannot be decided in the tripartite meeting that was held in Damascus and which was described as a summit on Lebanon , but in which neither the Lebanese president nor the prime minister or the speaker took part “.
He added “since the Lebanese official institutions were not represented at the Damascus summit , Lebanon cannot accept the consequences of the decisions of the tripartite meeting”
MP Ghazi Youssef told LBC: What we are witnessing today in Iranian intervention and Syrian-Iranian rapprochement may have negative repercussions on the Lebanese spectrum. The picture of Ahmadinejad with Assad and Nasrallah gives an impression of a tripartite alliance gathering Hezbollah, Syria and Iran.
MP Samer Saade told Future News TV: Entangling Lebanon in a war without discussions and agreement with the president or the premier is unacceptable
Phalange party MP and former Tourism minister Elie Marouni told VDL: There’s a group that is seeking to build a state and another seeking to maintain mini-states, but we’ll keep seeking to build a unified state with one army at a time some are speaking of autonomous security.
MP Sami Gemayel said in an interview with al Watan Al Arabi magazine that Hezbollah party has shown that it doesn’t give a damn about the Lebanese people, nor the government or the state. He added Hezbollah decides on its own on whether to have dialogue or to make the decisions of war and peace.
He added: The Lebanese people are sick and tired of wars, but the issue is not in their hands since Hezbollah has been deciding when Lebanon should be destroyed. Such behavior on the part of Hezbollah will lead to setting it up as the biggest loser in the end because no party was ever able to rule Lebanon on its own and everyone that tried failed badly.
Lebanese are constantly reminded of the 2006 war which resulted in the killing of over 1200 Lebanese , mainly civilians , the wounding of over 5000 Lebanese, the destruction of over 120,000 housing units and the devastation of the Lebanese infrastructure . They still remember what happened and don’t want that whole scenario repeated. They also remember what Hezbollah did after the war when it occupied downtown Beirut to bring down the government. They know what happened to the economy and the downtown businesses during that period.
The war was triggered by the abduction of 2 Israeli soldiers . Nasrallah said on TV after the war ended that had he known of the magnitude of Israeli response he would not have approved the kidnappings . In other words he gambled the future of the whole country just to declare a phony victory which he called divine victory all at the expense of the Lebanese people , because the government in the end had to borrow funds or beg for them to repair the damages . Such behavior by Hezbollah outrages the Lebanese and is precisely the reason why Gemayel said ” Hezbollah party has shown that it doesn’t give a damn about the Lebanese people, nor the government or the state. “
