Syria’s opposition called for protests against Russia

Syria’s main opposition coalition has called for “peaceful protests” across the world on Wednesday against Russia, a key ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime.

In a statement late Monday, the Syrian National Council urged “Syrians and friends of the Syrian people across the world to hold peaceful demonstrations on Wednesday at 1 pm in front of Russian embassies and diplomatic offices to express their deep-seated rage concerning Russia’s official stance.”

The SNC criticized Russia for “supporting the criminal and murderous regime in Syria and for providing it with international political cover, enabling it to continue to repress the Syrian people and to commit the most heinous crimes.”

Since the start of the Syrian uprising in March 2011, Russia and China have sided with Assad’s regime and have repeatedly obstructed any UN Security Council action against him and his embattled government.
