Yemen: Anwar al-Awlaki, top Al Qaeda figure killed

Share:

Al Qaeda figure Anwar al-Awlaki, one of the most wanted terrorists on a U.S. target list, has been killed in Yemen, according to a statement issued by the country’s defense ministry.

Mr. Awlaki has long been at the top of the U.S. target list in Yemen. He has been accused of involvement in several terrorism incidents in the U.S. in recent years. While he wasn’t a top operational leader in al Qaeda, Mr. Awlaki’s U.S. roots and fluent English made him a special concern of U.S. counterterrorism officials, who have been attempting to kill or apprehend him for several years.

Yemeni security officials told the Associated Press that there was an air strike Friday morning in the country’s east, between al-Jawf and Marib regions. The officials couldn’t provide more details and spoke on condition of anonymity because they aren’t authorized to talk to the media. Tribal elders in the area told the AP that the air strike targeted an al Qaeda convoy in the east.

Mr. Awlaki’s death would be another significant blow to al Qaeda after the death of Osama bin Laden earlier this year.

Yemen has been a growing concern for counterterrorism officials as the country has descended into chaotic factional fighting as several key groups have turned on president Ali Abdullah Saleh this year. As the fighting has continued in the capital, outlying areas have increasingly come under the sway of militant Islamist groups, including al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula. At the same time, counterterrorism teams have stepped up their hunt for key figures and have killed several in the past few months.

By the way, Geo, Haven’t seen much of Gassan since Prophet got ‘tagged’. Do you think the ‘bots’ got him too? 😉

    1. its funny that you bring that up, some of the best exchanges i enjoyed on this site were between prophet and ghassan,  their style,  quality, respect and intelect in exchanging point of views made it worthwhile to stay in tuned to yalibnan.

on a different subject i thought of you as i was enjoyig one of my favorite brews maudit, and la fin du mond brewed in montreal canada, if you have access  to it in your neck of the woods  i highly recomend it unless you already have it on hand in one of your many drawers. ;-)… be careful it is a sledge hammer 9.3 % octane lol.

I’m noting the names, Geo. 🙂  Dark & sweet is my preference. 🙂 That ‘La Fin du Monde’ reminds me of my past.
My Father used to brew his own for a while. I’m sure it was at least that 9.3 … or more. One time, he mistakenly bottled before it had stopped ‘working’ … about 2 weeks later while we sat in a room above where it was stored, one bottle popped – stopping conversation – then another … and the chain reaction grew as large as Dad’s eyes were getting. We did not dare go into the room until sure all was quiet. 🙂 What a mess. We opened the few that had survived, found them exceedingly ‘good’, and laughed ourselves silly … leaving clean-up to the next day. :-))

        1. :-):-) great story and memory, but what a loss of a good brew lol, there are many things i love about canada and us but their usual watered down  beer is not one of them, sorry ,,i prefer darker  foreign brews any day. maudit and la fin du monde were created by a micro  brewery in montreal and quickly got bought out by sleemans. you make it to my neighborhood and  many  rounds are on me brother.

The man was no ‘cleric’ — simply a dangerous malcontent, giving good Muslims a bad name.  Why can not Muslims themselves deal in some way with these poor individuals?
