Lebanon backs Syria in rejecting AL statement over bloodshed

Share:

Lebanon on Wednesday backed Syria in rejecting an Arab League statement demanding an end to the bloodshed in the country.

“Lebanon stands by brotherly Syria and its stance is clear in this regard,” Foreign Minister Adnan Mansour told the Hezbollah-run al Nour radio station.

Mansour is a member of the Amal Movement which is headed by Speaker Nabih Berri a close ally of Hezbollah .The cabinet of PM Nagib Mikati is heavily influenced by Hezbollah, a close ally of Iran and Syria.

Foreign ministers from the 22-member Arab League last week issued a statement calling for an “end to the spilling of blood and for Syria to follow the way of reason before it is too late”.

The organisation also announced a peace initiative aimed at resolving the crisis in Syria where more than 2 000 people have been killed in anti-government protests.

Syria ‘in violation of Arab League charter’

Mansour noted that Syria made the right decision by rejecting the meeting’s closing statement, adding that “a consensus had been reached by the conferees not to issue a statement at the end of the meeting but some attending the meeting, breached it and issued it”.

“Such a stand by some of the Arab League’s foreign ministers prompted the Syrian delegation to send a diplomatic note to the Arab League’s general secretariat in which it noted that the released statement did not reflect the meeting’s final agreement,” he said.

An Arab diplomat based in Beirut told the German Press Agency dpa that “Syria in its diplomatic note to the organisation’s secretariat, said the statement by the Arab foreign ministers amounted to a clear violation … of the principles of the Arab League charter and of the foundations of joint Arab action”.

He added that Syria described the statement in its letter as “unacceptable”.

The diplomat said Arab League Secretary General Nabil al Arabi was still awaiting an invitation from Syria to travel there, but there has been no response from the government.

This, he said, “proves that a conflict between Syria and the Arab League is looming”.

You can officially call it the Islamic Republic of Lebanon.
Does this country make any sense at all to you?In 2005, 1.5 Million people protested to remove this filthy Syria out of our country.
And now our country is supporting the bloodshed in Syria.
I am so disgusted i am living in such a country.

    Correction of Title:
The title of this news bit should read, “the Government of Lebanon that does not represent the Lebanese electorate….”

God help the Lebanese when Assad is kicked out.  The free Syrian government that comes after him will severely deal with the Lebanese government which did not stand by the Syrian people who will eventually win.

  12. This is what happens when a country racked by civil war for over a decade is taken over by Iran through Hezbollah. Now watch as Syria falls, these fools will attack Israel as a distraction from the damages that they are and have caused…

Guys I’m becoming bored with Ya Libnan style of reporting. The only thing that they report day and night is stories about Bashar Al Assad and his Iranian counterpart Ahmadinejad. One who reads these articles gets the impression that the whole world revolves around these two leaders.
There are far more important news stories in this world than Bashar Al Assad and Ahmadinejad. I hope many will agree with me in this respect.

It seems that most Lebanese media outlets have their own political agendas. What  keeps  me  on  this  blog is  a  number of  wonderful  people  I enjoy  exchanging  views  with , and the fact that  yalibnan is  a good forum for  commentators who live outside of Lebanon,  like  us. I  appreciate yalibnan, and hope they  would spread out  their coverage  of the  news, and don’t  make it  sound  that  the  whole  world  revolves around the  Syrian  regime ,HA, and  March 14.

        Hi Prophet,
Honestly, I enjoy reading your comments from time to time. What I’m saying is that this blog and others lack cultural and intellectual news. Again this is not Ya Libnan’s fault our entire culture has become extemely materialistic and artificial in every possible way.
Remember these blogs are only reflection to the needs of our overall society.

Syria wants the Arab league to give it a free pass for what it is doing and it looks like it is not able to force anyone else besides Lebanon do do so….the arab league may in fact condemn Syria and in the process doom the regime as the western powers will see this as a green light for military intervention Lybia style.

“…  a clear violation … of the principles of the Arab League charter and of the foundations of joint Arab action”.”
Hmmmm .. so … not that I read it … but did that charter and it’s ‘foundation’ say if one state was torturing and killing it’s people off regularly, the others would all agree it was an Arab thing to do, and therefore a fine thing with all of them?  Perhaps time to re-work that little contract too, since some ‘principles’ may have changed slightly.

If you are old enough, would remember that Hezbollah and Amal fought battles in the Beirut’s streets for ideological control the like of the Palestine Hamas and Abbas supporters. Supporting Syria will come back to hunt them, where there is no exit or place to stand on.
