Russian presidential envoy to Africa Mikhail Margelov told Syrian opposition members that “leaders come and go” – an apparent signal to Syrian President Bashar Assad that he cannot count on his ally’s unconditional support after months of protests demanding his ouster.
It remains to be seen if Margelov’s comments indicate a change in Moscow’s opposition to tough U.N. action on Syria for Assad’s bloody crackdown on his opponents.
Members of Syria’s opposition in exile said they would use a visit to Moscow on Tuesday to urge Russia to condemn the violent crackdown on protests in the Middle Eastern nation.
Margelov has been involved in Russian efforts to mediate in North Africa and the Middle East
The Facebook group, The Syrian Revolution 2011, which boasts more than 210,000 followers and which has emerged as the organizing force behind the demonstrations that have been demanding “freedom” in Syria has reported that Aleppo , the second largest city in Syria is expected to have a huge protest on Thursday June 30 . The group issued a poster in which it stated: ” Get ready for the Aleppo volcano ”
Aleppo has not participated in the protests like the other cities in Syria… specially Homs, Hama, Daraa, Deir el Zour, Qamishly etc..etc…According to reports the Christians of Aleppo are concerned that the protesters may be Syrian Islamic fundamentalists, such as the Muslim brotherhood …but many observers are of the opinion that the Syrian revolution has nothing to do with the Brotherhood or any fundamentalist group and is being led by young educated and modern Syrians who believe in democracy and freedom .
Rights groups say over 1,400 civilians have been killed in demonstrations in a three-month revolt against Assad’s rule.
