Tanks occupy Syrian town of Homs

Videos have been posted online that are purported to show government tanks occupying the town of Homs in western Syria.

Homs has been the scene of violent clashes between protesters and Syrian security forces who are trying to stifle dissent to President Bashar Assad’s rule.

Syria’s third largest city is home to one of the country’s two oil refineries and has already been the target of sustained shelling by Assad’s forces.

Syrian authorities are determined to crush the uprising that began in the southern city of Dera’a in mid-March and the methods used have led to accusations of brutality and sanctions from both the European Union and the United States.
