Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea criticized on Wednesday Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun, saying: “I did not expect you to reach such a low level and for you to call on your allies to militarily attack your Christian opponents.”
The LF leader’s comment comes in response to Aoun’s statement on Tuesday that Geagea should not take to the streets and use arms.
“I did not expect you to make up so many lies … Tell me General, who posses weapons the LF or your allies ? Are the LF or you are the one that has been calling for civil disobedience against the legitimate legal and security authorities?” he said.
Aoun is closely allied with the Iranian and Syrian backed Hezbollah organization , which is the only armed group in Lebanon
Geagea further attacked Aoun for criticizing the judiciary and justifying Syria’s arrest warrants.
“Yesterday you justified Syria’s arrest warrants by saying that the Lebanese judiciary was too slow in implementing its duties, does this mean that every Lebanese citizen who believes that the judiciary is being lax should resort to a foreign judiciary to meet his demands faster?” he asked.
Last Sunday the Syrian judiciary reportedly issued 33 arrest warrants for judges, officers, politicians and journalists of Lebanese, Arab and other nationalities in the case brought by former Lebanese General Security chief Jamil as-Sayyed, according to a statement from Sayyed’s office.
In December 2009, Sayyed filed a lawsuit in Damascus against various defendants whom he alleges were involved in a conspiracy of false testimonies against him.
Sayyed and 3 other generals were detained from 2005 to 2009 on suspicion of involvement in former PM Rafik Hariri’s murder. In April 2009, the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL ) ordered their release without charges due to insufficient evidence. STL prosecutor made it clear at the time they were set free that their release did not mean they are Innocent and that once more evidence is available they could be back in jail.
“Is this the sovereignty you claim to have been seeking for decades?” Geagea asked of the FPM leader.
“Is this the sovereignty that hundreds of youth have shed blood for and endured oppression, persecution, and time in prison?”
“My dear friend General Aoun, lying can only get you so far and I had predicted an unsuccessful political end for you, but nothing like the disgraceful end such as the one we are witnessing today,” Geagea concluded.
