Iraq’s Foreign Ministry summoned the Turkish ambassador on Saturday to demand that Turkey immediately withdraw hundreds of troops deployed in recent days to northern Iraq, near the Islamic State-controlled city of Mosul.

The ministry said in a statement the Turkish forces had entered Iraqi territory without the knowledge of the central government in Baghdad, and that Iraq considered such presence “a hostile act”.

But Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said the troop rotation was routine and that Turkish forces had set up a camp near Mosul almost a year ago in coordination with Iraqi authorities.

“This camp was established as a training camp for a force of local volunteers fighting terrorism,” he said in a speech to a labor union that was broadcast live by NTV news channel.

Islamic State militants overran Mosul in June 2014. A much anticipated counter-offensive by Iraqi forces has been repeatedly postponed because they are tied down in fighting elsewhere.

Iraq has urged the international community to provide more weapons and training in its battle against Islamic State, but rejects most forms of direct intervention, mistrusting the intentions of foreign powers.

Davutoglu said the camp, located some 30 km (19 miles) northeast of Mosul, was set up at the Mosul governor’s request and in coordination with the Iraqi Defence Ministry.

“It has trained more than 2,000 of our Mosul brothers, contributing to the freeing of Mosul from the Islamic State terrorist organization,” he said.

Iraqi President Fouad Massoum earlier described the deployment as “a violation of international norms and law” and called on Turkey to withdraw, echoing a statement from Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi’s media office a day earlier.

A senior Kurdish military officer based north of Mosul told Reuters that additional Turkish trainers had arrived at a camp in the area overnight on Thursday escorted by a Turkish protection force.

A small number of Turkish trainers was already at the camp to train the Hashid Watani (national mobilization), a force made up of mainly Sunni Arab former Iraqi police and volunteers from Mosul.

The United States was aware of Turkey’s deployment of Turkish soldiers to northern Iraq but the move is not part of the U.S.-led coalition’s activities, according to defense officials in Washington.

U.S. officials made several statements last week on plans to send more U.S. troops to Iraq, prompting powerful Iraqi politicians and militias to protest against the presence of any foreign troops in Iraq without explicit permission from parliament.

Powerful Iraqi Shi’ite Muslim armed groups have pledged to fight a planned deployment of U.S. forces to the country. Turkey has in recent months been bombing Kurdish militant positions in northern Iraq.

      Yes…Renaissance; killing Armenian Genocide grandchildren..

      1. Turkey still deny the Armenian Genocide.

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) rules it is not a crime to deny that mass killings of Armenians was a “genocide” – but what happened in 1915 and why do Turks deny it was a genocide?

Since Turks took Anatolia (Byzantine Empire), and changed the name to Istambul, they have killed Christians. In WW1 the great powers divided the Midlle East drew lines in the sand, and changed the name Mesopotamia to Irak.
Western powers never wanted to aknowledge the Armenian Genocide for geopolitical interests, and the creation of Israel. Ataturk was a Jew from Salonica.

Nor any reason to keep track on the Armenian Genocide it’s forbiden. I’m Middle East Christian i have my history you have yours.

          5. I don’t keep any track on the Armenian Genocide, it’s history.

Indeed we in europe have our own history in each country.
We finally are in peace with each other, unfortunately it is not the case in the Middle East.

Christianity was born in the Middle East.
Europe adopted Christianity, but does nothing about the massacres of Oriental Christians, it does not aknowlege the Armenian Genocide.
            So no it’s not “history”.

We had Popes and Bishops 200 years before Rome!
While the Balkans barbarians sacked Rome in 500 Constantine saved the seat of the Empire (Europe) moving to Constantinople (Byzantine Empire)..that’s gratitude.

          9. 5thDrawer Avatar

Because I care about the ‘ONE’ perhaps? Essays are about a ‘concept’ …. few seem to have overviews of the simple things about the human animal. I attempt to punt them in sometimes.

Each Genocide has it’s own flavour, and it’s own trackers … and it’s various detractors.
If ‘WE’ The People have recognized them as such, then no matter what ‘The Tops’ wish to argue about them, or who wants to mount cenotaphs to the events, the fact remains, they were and are Genocides. Yazzidis, similar to Jews, seem to have suffered them irregularly over centuries, Rwanda was another round of that kind of insanity. Natives in all the Americas experienced it – and still do in tree-cutter lands of the Amazon.
What happens generally to ‘Various Syrians’ now is a form of it, although it would be much easier to say it’s ‘Genocide against Women and Children’ because that’s who suffer and die the most. A million shell-shocked and brain-damaged-forever orphans ARE another Genocide of Epic Proportions. Even if the bodies are still sort-of-alive to starve a while, they are essentially dead humans.
Holding the ‘High Card’ for being part of the crowd which suffered a Genocide in it’s past is more important to that particular crowd, of course … and highlighting the various barbaric methods by which they were slaughtered is more important to the propagandists who wish to hold the High Cards.
The importance is KNOWING what happened .. and stating that it did.
One could easily say that the ‘Factory Method’ of Hitler’s little gang was actually more humane – gassing, for instance, was perhaps nicer than being hacked to death slowly by Machete, or forced into long sun-burning marches into bare mountains to slowly starve to death listening to your crying children doing the same. But the fact remains .. it’s a Genocide. Period. And anything visited upon ONE person in that manner, for the same reasons of their unfortunate circumstance of their Tribal Birth, is the same as a few million … the only difference is the numbers.

Hitler said before the Holocaust: “Who remembers the Armenian Genocide today?”

          14. 5thDrawer Avatar

Funny fellow … Armenians remembered, of course. And no-one managed to eliminate them all, even though they wished to. SO, of course, WE know and remember.
Hitler was one of those ‘Tops’ I speak about …. after all. 😉

So, I should ask if you are Jewish … or worse, a Zionist … she seems to think so.
But this again would be ascribing to those theories that prompt the thinking that IF someone agrees with someone else on a single point of thought, then that person is OF a ‘sect’ which wants to control everyone, including controlling my desire to be naked on a beach in warm weather.

          31. I noticed that she have some problems with Jews or just Jewish Zionists.

Well, I read it too. Seems a never-ending argument of the ‘posting world’ because ‘legalese’ can’t accept hearsay evidence from a reporter no matter how good he was. And this is the crux of many problems. One guy says ‘I read it’, and another says ‘Prove it’ … and there is no answer to that. It’s like the God Theory … one believes or one doesn’t. Is the reporter honest or not? Huge debate.
Which is why it’s wrong to base the laws and mores of a country on a religion. For perhaps half the population there is no reality in it. No ‘Reason’.

            Historians know this.

“RA Ambassador to Switzerland Charles Aznavour believes that Israel will recognize the Armenian Genocide sooner or later, despite its strategic partnership with Turkey.
Jews themselves have already recognized this tragedy, he said in an interview with Canadian Jewish News. Jews, as a nation that experienced Holocaust, realize what happened with Armenians early in the 20th century, says Aznavour. If the world stood for Armenians in 1915, Hitler would not have dared to exterminate Jews, cynically saying “Who remembers the Armenian Genocide today?”
