The son of Suriname’s president was sentenced on Tuesday to 16-1/4 years in prison, after pleading guilty last August to U.S. charges that he tried to offer a home base to the Lebanese paramilitary group Hezbollah.

Dino Bouterse, 42, who worked in a Suriname counter terrorist unit, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Shira Scheindlin in Manhattan. Bouterse had also admitted to drug trafficking and firearms charges.

U.S. prosecutors accused Bouterse of inviting people he thought were from Hezbollah to establish a base in his home country, located north of Brazil, in exchange for $2 million that was ultimately not paid.

Bouterse was arrested by Panamanian authorities after a sting in which he allegedly talked about his activities with confidential informants from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

Hezbollah has since 1997 been designated by the U.S. State Department as a foreign terrorist organization.

Dressed in a blue-gray shirt and pants, Bouterse said prior to sentencing that “what I did does not really represent my country,” and that his imprisonment would hurt his 11 children, aged 2 to 19.

“I really regret my actions, and I am deeply, deeply, deeply ashamed of myself,” he said. “I take full responsibility.”

Prosecutors had urged that Bouterse spend 30 years to life in prison, in accordance with recommended federal guidelines.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Lockard said this reflected Bouterse’s agreement to “open up his country” to terrorist camps, and a need to deter other government officials “willing to sell access.”

But the judge said the guidelines were “fundamentally unfair,” given that Bouterse appeared motivated by a desire to make “a lot of money” rather than help terrorists. She also said the sting meant Hezbollah had no actual role to begin with.

“Nothing in his history shows that he is a terrorist, or that he had terrorist sympathies,” Scheindlin said. “His greed got the better of him.”

After the sentencing, family members blew kisses to Bouterse, who smiled and gave a thumbs-up sign. He had been in federal custody since being transported to the United States.

Richard Rosenberg, a lawyer for Bouterse, called the sentence “very harsh,” but was glad Scheindlin “underscored the lack of any clear connection to any actual terrorism.”

Bouterse’s father, Desi Bouterse, ruled Suriname after a coup from 1980 to 1987, and has been accused of human rights violations. He reclaimed power in 2010 when he was elected president.

The case is U.S. v. Bouterse, U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York, No. 13-cr-00635.

Always about the money. Seems a fair Judge, at least.

This is still about USA world domination and the evil they do in other peoples countries. Traditionally they would have murdered some one like this. But having a hostage that they can use as extortion probably suits them as well.
I feel sorry for the decades of abuse this guy will experience. I doubt he will ever be released.

No I see myself more as a social observer and commentator. Not paid by any one.
I looked in to most of the political movements and there origins. I do not really like any of them.
Still reverts down to people with huge wealth fighting each other or the poor being slaughtered by the wealthy.Perhaps the French revolutions were an exception with decades of all social groups loosing their heads.
Conversely humanity does some times surprise me.
With 8 billion and almost all of the land under some sort of farming. I just do not think we have time or be wasting the resources on war.
My conflict is I am a smoker and no children so there is part of me due to one world government type policies means I hope they all meet a violent and bloxdy death. Or some one starts a nuclear war.
On communism…Historically there are factions who seek out and murder or destroy people like this. very prevalent in the west. The US is currently trying to data mine Bulgaria for its records of ex communist government as an example. I know they will use as extortion and abuse the data. It is a cultural tradition. Empire building?
US ambassadors going around the EU saying TIPP means the US/EU can dictate to the world if this goes through..
I do not think one small group of bureaucrats should have the ability to dictate to billions of people. Am I any different to them? 🙂 I do not force any one to live the way I do so yes.

Understand the smoking part … I like Scotch and a good cuban cigar. TOO. 🙂
There really is no way to be out of the clutches of those who wish to always tell us what to do – as liberal types say: ‘for your own good’. :-)) A LOT of ‘programmers’ out there.
Make it a habit to vote differently every time … don’t tell ‘pollsters’ you made up your mind on anything …. keeps ’em guessing. :-))
But there is little escape, sorry to say, unless you’re a hermit living in a cave with your ‘spare-change-box’ buried somewhere … and even then the guy you trade pelts for salt with will eventually say: ‘There’s this weird old guy I get the pelts from…’
‘THEY’ will come along eventually and tell you living in a cave is bad for your health, wrap you in a straight jacket, and ‘give’ you ‘preferred lodgings’ … forever, if necessary.
            SO .. what to do.
LIVE in your mind … and when out, just appear to be a ‘normal’ drudge. 😉

My grandparents generation killed, looted and raped its way to Germany twice Supposedly to preserve freedoms. Seems it was all for nothing.

Yah … good thoughts, used by megalomaniacs who were supposedly ‘allies’ on the other jaw of the pinchers. A few made profits with it. But you need to admit Hitler wasn’t being friendly to England, let alone the ‘allies’ of Europe … who in turn hadn’t been friendly to Germany after the first biggie … either … which was more of a ‘created’ build-up and only needed one ASSasination to kick it off.
All about Iron, Coal, Food. And largely wasted on Wars.
            Humans too.

It left the whole of Europe a flattened ruins.
And yet it is claimed “We won”
With the politicians in the UK we have today I give a small prayer each day for that nuclear war they promised us in the 70’s

Don’t be a ‘defeatist’. You can be all you wish … in a comfy sort of way.
Life has never NOT been a battle on this planet. 😉
