Many Nigerian students are feared dead after Islamists attack college

nigeria yobe mapA number of students are feared dead after suspected Islamist gunmen struck a college in north-eastern Nigeria.

The students were shot dead as they slept in their dormitory at the College of Agriculture in Yobe state.

North-eastern Nigeria is under a state of emergency amid an Islamic insurgency by the Boko Haram group.

Boko Haram is fighting to overthrow Nigeria’s government to create an Islamist state, and has launched a number of attacks on schools.

The number of casualties in the latest attack is unclear but there are fears the death toll could be high.

A military spokesman in Yobe state, Lazarus Eli, told Agence France-Presse news agency said the gunmen had also set fire to classrooms.

The college is in the rural Gujba district.

In June, Boko Haram carried out two attacks on schools in the region.

At least nine children were killed in a school on the outskirts of Maiduguri, while 13 students and teachers were killed in a school in Damaturu.

In July in the town of Mamudo, Islamist militants attacked dormitories with guns and explosives, killing at least 42 people, mostly students.

    An Abomination, that Haram. And most happy to kill just anyone … more than the Taliban who don’t want girls in school … whether Muslim or not, as was seen in Kenya.
    Depraved Sadists of the lowest order.

      This won’t end until the root cause is addressed. But since we can’t even say ‘Islamic supremacism” without blushing, I am not holding my breath.

        The fact they attack a school of agriculture only highlights the reasons that Somalians who were not shot, starved instead. And when the idiots couldn’t feed themselves, they raided refugee camps to kidnap field-workers to grow food for them in the areas they had chased people from. They can’t figure out why Allah isn’t dropping coconuts on their heads like Manna in a dessert … although that wouldn’t be a bad idea … hmmm ….

    Pakistan,. Kenya, Nigeria… is it just me or is it a particularly nasty September?

      We ARE noticing … yes. They are spreading like a plague … no-education but brainwashed.

        I try to always remind myself that this is still the safest time to be alive in human history. Violence is at a 100,000 year low. Reporting on violence is at a 100,000 year high.

        I wonder if terrorism would be effective in a world without CNN, BBC, radio, the interweb (its a series of tubes), etc..

          Well Jewy … it’s one thing to have a lot of information readily available, and quite another to know what to do with it. In fact, there’s a need to understand the difference between ‘fact’, which is generally boring, and the ‘news-show’ stuff that is speculative theoretical opinion. AND Sure, the various idiots ‘play up’ for the ‘fear-factor’ effects that news of their antics will give, especially to people who basically believe fairy tales, and that we’re going to hell in a hand basket if we don’t ‘blow them up real good’.
          You need to consider also what facts make this a ‘safe time’ in human history.
          And where we find the odds are in favour for a human life to be longer.
          For instance, how much of a factor is a continuous food supply, or modern medicine, if it is worked into the ‘safety’ equation? What if you took those out?

            If we took those out half of us would be dead from dysentery the other half would have polio! We would be a foot shorter and would smell like we haven’t bathed in a week if you could afford perfume and two weeks if you couldn’t.

            We have penicillin, air-conditioning, and tivo. And yet, we are not happy.
